Die Stadt Triest stellt im 18. Jahrhundert in mehrfacher Hinsicht eine Besonderheit dar. Durch das Freihandelspatent Karls VI. zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts kam es zu gravierenden wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Veranderungen. Dass dabei die Kirche nicht untatig zusehen wollte, versteht sich von selbst. So versuchte der dem Wiener Hof gut bekannte Antonius Johannes N. (Ferdinand) Reichsgraf von Herberstein, ab 1760 Bischof der alten Dioezese Triest, mit Hilfe einer Vielzahl verschiedener Projekte und Eingaben bei der Behoerde den neuen Zeiten gerecht zu werden. Der Autor versucht anhand von Quellenmaterial dem politischen und kirchlichen Sonderfall Triest in der Zeit des beginnenden Josephinismus nachzuspuren und das nicht immer spannungsfreie Verhaltnis Kirche-Behoerde darzustellen.

Nach ausgedehnten Bildungsreisen nach Frankreich und Italien unternahm Ferdinand Geizkofler, der Sohn des ehemaligen Reichspfennigmeisters Zacharias Geizkofler, eine weitere Reise, die ihn uber den Niederrhein und die Generalstaaten nach England, Schottland und in die spanischen Niederlande fuhrte. Die dichte Korrespondenz zwischen Vater und Sohn sowie des begleitenden Hofmeisters Dominicus Orth gibt nicht nur Einblicke in die Gepflogenheiten an den besuchten Hofen, sondern auch in die Bildungs- und Alltagsgeschichte des Reisens in der fruhen Neuzeit. Zugleich sind die Briefe ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis der Mehrsprachigkeit als Schlusselqualifikation fur die Karriere in Politik und Verwaltung Ferdinand Geizkoflers: 1625 in den Freiherrenstand erhoben, war er 1627 wurttembergischer Hofrat, bevor er 1628 in die Dienste der Republik Venedig trat. Unter dem im Exil weilenden Herzog Eberhard III. wurde er von 1641 bis 1646 als herzoglicher Statthalter zu Stuttgart, geheimer Regimentsrat, Hofkanzlei- und Landesdirektor de facto Regent in Wurttemberg. Die Edition schliesst eine Forschungslucke zur Familie eines der herausragenden politischen Akteure im Heiligen Romischen Reich Deutscher Nation im Vorfeld des Dreissigjahrigen Krieges (1618-1648).
