Exploring the decades-long working relationship between Fred Sandback and Dia Art Foundation, which served as a venue for his “situational” sculpture In 1968, sculptor Fred Sandback (1943–2003) mounted his first solo exhibition at Heiner Friedrich’s Munich gallery, displaying works made from elastic cord or acrylic yarn that traced planes and volumes in space. Thus began a long-term relationship that extended to Dia Art Foundation, the institution cofounded by Friedrich in 1974. Until now, there has been little published on Sandback’s extraordinary alliance with Dia. Essayists Julian M. Rose, Corinna Thierolf and Edward A. Vazquez, as well as conversation partners Matilde Guidelli-Guidi and Curtis Harvey, unearth and explore archival documents, sketches and photographs to reveal how the institution offered Sandback both space and time to meticulously hone his sculptural interventions in the architectural environments of Dia, including the Fred Sandback Museum in Winchendon, Massachusetts, and Dia Beacon, New York.

Fred the Head weaves a collage of stories, some fictional, others disguised memories, together in search of mutual cohesion. The stories examine, to differing degrees, the lives of those who are obliquely connected to the title character of the piece, who holds them together like orbiting planets. The reader might consider where lost memories go, whether they can ever be found, and how they might be connected to all of us. Is this voodoo, metaphysics, fancy, or madness? Or, perhaps, an acknowledgement that we all are bound by invisible threads which only sometimes make themselves visible to us and the participants of these stories.Fred the Head indirectly examines the nature of fiction, the experiences that inform that fiction, and the power of those experiences to hold us and to follow us over time.

Fredy's Journey: A Frog on a Motorcycle Ride is the story of Fredy a frog who meets a motorcyclist and photographer (Bo'del) at the pond in Michigan and rides across country on Bo'del's motorcycle to go "where the birds can fly".Fredy leaves behind his friends at the pond to venture further than frogs can hop having Bo'del write notes home to his friends at the pond. Sending photo's and travel stories from 11 states. Fredy travels from Michigan through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona being photographed, meeting humans, hearing of scary animals (rattlesnakes are bad) and meeting nice animals as well.Fredy's needs are simple, seeing new places, lots of water to play in and bugs to eat. Each state offers something different.35 pages illustrated with 46 full color photographs and a map of Fredy's route, Fredy's Journey is an entertaining travelogue for parents to read to preschool age children or for beginning readers.Fredy's Journey Pg. 14 Mississippi letter home: Last night we stopped in Hattiesburg Mississippi because Bo'del saw a sign that said motel and laundromat. I think it's silly these humans want to clean clothes all the time. We were supposed to ride to the Gulf of Mexico tonight. He was tired, so was I, so I guess it's okay.In the morning LOOK AT MY PICTURE We made it to the Gulf of Mexico This is my ultimate portrait, proof that I can go where the birds fly. There are lots of Seagulls like the ones that visit the pond, and Pelicans. They are VERY scary looking but Bo'del says they eat fish and probably have never seen a frog before. I think I'll stay close to Bo'del. Pelicans don't seem to like him. This is part of the Atlantic Ocean and nobody, not even the birds can see across it. It's even bigger than Lake Michigan The water tastes terrible, really salty. I hope we find some pond water when we get to Louisiana.Fredy (and Bo'del)

The story is about a body-brain named Tom, and a soul-consciousness-awareness thing that doesn't have a name. Tom's body-brain has the very latest sensors and articulation devices, such as fingers, arms, toes and legs. His sensors are tuned for a specific frame-rate and frequency bands. His body-brain can take samples and can analyze them in several ways including consuming the sample. However, a body-brain cannot determine meaning or purpose without a soul-consciousness-awareness thing. Tom's original soul-consciousness-awareness thing vanished after an accident caused a total loss of memory. Tom's body-brain needed a replacement in order to function in a reality of Gods and Demons where a society of body-brains like Tom, all had an advantage--a soul-consciousness-awareness thing. Finding a replacement wasn't going to be easy, what type of soul-consciousness-awareness thing would want a damaged body-brain? There was no choice but to grow one. Tom's body-brain had several near-death-experiences after the accident, with each NDE altering or replacing the soul-consciousness-awareness thing. With enough practice, body-brains become skilled and Tom's body-brain was getting really good at growing a soul-consciousness-awareness thing and playing music and creating art. It takes time and diligence to grow a soul-consciousness-awareness thing because there are several stages or levels of development that occur that require nourishment and nurturing. Tom's body-brain fine-tuned his recipe from his earlier efforts and created the perfect soul-consciousness-awareness thing to fulfill his desire to talk with a God of the first kind. *Includes pictures of Astaire, Rogers, and other important people and scenes. *Includes their quotes about each other. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. Virtually all famous actors are regaled by the public, but even still, Fred Astaire occupies a privileged position in American pop culture. The specific films in which Astaire acted may not be especially famous in their own right - most people likely cannot recall the title of Top Hat (1935), his most decorated film - but Astaire's dancing prowess invariably creates a lasting impact on viewers. Instead of tying his fame to a single film, Astaire's genius lay in constructing his star persona around a specific set of iconographic imagery that has become embedded within American culture. Across his films, the recurring iconic images of the top hat, cane, and coat tails, as well as the image of Astaire dancing with Ginger Rogers, all constitute a timeless symbol for elegance that continues to captivate viewers who are unfamiliar with the plots of his films. There have been other film musical actors who were proficient dancers, Gene Kelly chief among them, but none were able to perform with the seamless elegance of Astaire, and none have been remembered nearly as well. Astaire's dancing numbers epitomized grace and gaiety, making it seem as though he was carefree, but this was hardly the case. While it is easy to imagine Astaire being raised in an aristocratic family, his working-class background was so blue collar that his family eventually relied on him and his sister as the primary breadwinners in the family. Rather than being born and raised with wealth in a large city, Astaire came from a working-class neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska, a setting so antithetical to the world of dance that it quickly became clear that the family would need to relocate. If anything, Astaire's unglamorous origins further demonstrate that the magisterial dancing and the effortlessly elegant image accompanying it were products of Astaire's tireless work ethic and insistence on perfection. Considering the immense success of their films together, it is entirely understandable that Astaire and Rogers are joined at the hip in the eyes of the public. However, an appreciation for the Fred and Ginger musicals is only enhanced by knowledge of the personal backgrounds of the two stars. After all, the fact remains that Astaire and Rogers came from vastly different cultural backgrounds, and at the time that they met, their careers had unfolded in dissimilar ways. Astaire was a national celebrity for his skills as a stage performer (mainly with his sister Adele), while Rogers was raised in a more archetypal Midwestern setting and her professional success was reached entirely through cinema. While Astaire made a name for himself through his dancing, Rogers was more recognized for her singing talents. Clearly, it is still possible to discern fundamental differences between their professional talents, contrasts that would become more distinguishable once they ceased making films together. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers: The Story of Hollywood's Most Famous Dancers profiles the lives and careers of both stars, as well as a comprehensive analysis of their movies together. Along with a bibliography and pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Fred and Ginger like you never have before.
