Artists in the Audience

Artists in the Audience

Gone with the Wind an inspiration for the American avant-garde? Mickey Mouse a crucial source for the development of cutting-edge intellectual and aesthetic ideas? As Greg Taylor shows in this witty and provocative book, the idea is not so far-fetched. One of the first-ever studies of American film criticism, Artists in the Audience shows that film critics, beginning in the 1940s, turned to the movies as raw material to be molded into a more radical modernism than that offered by any other contemporary artists or thinkers. In doing so, they offered readers a vanguard alternative that reshaped postwar American culture: nonaesthetic mass culture reconceived and refashioned into rich, personally relevant art by the attuned, creative spectator.
Data Analysis for Complex Systems

Data Analysis for Complex Systems

The analysis of complex systems-from financial markets and voting patterns to ecosystems and food webs-can be daunting for newcomers to the subject, in part because existing methods often require expertise across multiple disciplines. This book shows how a single technique-the partition decoupling method-can serve as a useful first step for modeling and analyzing complex systems data. Accessible to a broad range of backgrounds and widely applicable to complex systems represented as high-dimensional or network data, this powerful methodology draws on core concepts in network modeling and analysis, cluster analysis, and a range of techniques for dimension reduction. The book explains these and other essential concepts and provides several real-world examples to illustrate how a data-driven approach can illuminate complex systems.Provides a comprehensive introduction to modeling and analysis of complex systems with minimal mathematical prerequisitesFocuses on a single technique, thereby providing an easy entry point to the subjectExplains analytic techniques using actual data from the social sciencesUses only linear algebra to model and analyze large data setsIncludes problems and real-world examplesAn ideal textbook for students and invaluable resource for researchers with a wide range of backgrounds and preparationProven in the classroom
Set Free: A Lifelong Christian's Overdue Discovery
For many a lifelong Christian, a maturing spiritual walk looks more like increased familiarity with spiritual self-disciplines, good living and a sterling track record than a truly life-altering, deeply intimate, ongoing experience alongside Jesus. This book should help reverse this undesirable low bar of spiritual expectation for many, resulting in the kind of vibrant and fulfilling new life Jesus intended for every true child of God. God wants us to know Him, not just a litany of facts about Him. But sadly, many Christians today are confusing rituals with relationship, customs with communion, and learning with love. It is today's great Christian tragedy that after receiving Jesus' miraculous gift of eternal life, becoming new creations in Christ and being given a new heart, we simply carry on with little more than new-found gratitude for our one shining moment of rescue from a life void of God's forgiveness. Fellow Christian, while our initial moment of salvation inks our name into the Lamb's Book of Life, guaranteeing us eternity with God in Christ, that moment has not solved all that ails us What is written in these pages could help bring about a truly vibrant life in Christ for many. Are you looking for more in your Christian walk? Are you tired of having only entered the race? Have you reached the end of yourself? Does your life as a Christian seem to be more about religion than relationship? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, it is likely this lifelong Christian's honest discovery of his new creation in Christ will be a catalyst to change your walk with Jesus as well.
The Cultural Evolution Inside of Mormonism
There's a cultural evolution taking place inside of Mormonism. The evolution of church culture has been something that has needed to happen for a long time. Culture, traditions, oral laws, and the status quo can be a good thing... but it can also be a bad thing. Do you remember what was happening in Israel around the time that Christ came on to the scene? Israel started to live by their own set of oral laws and traditions, or what we might refer to today as "culture." The "culture" in Israel when Christ showed up was one of the most judgmental and hypocritical cultures the world had ever seen. It was a very isolated and unaccepting culture. But Christ showed up and cast a net over all types of people. The Greeks, the Romans, the Samaritans, and every other nation across the globe. His net covered even the worst of repentant sinners. The only people that were excluded or "damned" were the unrepentant elite, the "scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites" who "strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel" (Matthew 23:23-24). Christ took the existing covenants and commandments and simplified them. He brought an evolution of love, empathy, and compassion. He built a culture that was geared toward the lowly of heart and revolted against those who spent their lives pointing out the flaws in others. "For ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness" (Matthew 23:27). The bulk of Israel was living according to their culture and their superstition instead of their religion. This has been the bane of each and every covenant society, which caused Joseph Smith to say, "What many people call sin is not sin; I do many things to break down superstition, and I will break it down." The doctrine of the LDS church doesn't lose people. It's the culture and superstition that causes unnecessary strife. This book, The Cultural Evolution Inside of Mormonism addresses the changing culture, the unprecedented changes that are taking place in the church, and the historical transparency. Eggs Are Expensive, Sperm Is Cheap: 50 Politically Incorrect Thoughts for Men
The current cultural assumptions about love, sex, dating and marriage are not only absurd, but a danger to society and to individuals. We've taken the most successful institution known to man, tinkered with it, played with it, and toyed with it until it's barely functional. Marriage simply isn't such a great deal these days, which is why many people are opting out. Especially young men. And if you look at the stats on divorce and the way men are treated in the family courts, you can hardly blame them. This little book says the problem lies with all the modern assumptions we've tagged on to marriage. Marriage is (or at least it was) the structure that took the complicated mess of human nature and created a legal and social framework that used our natural impulses and desires to create a stable society. Marriage is what keeps human cultures from devolving into chaos. As western society has gotten further and further from a reality-based perspective on the sexes, marriage has been on the rocks. Some say there's even a marriage strike. These 50 politically incorrect thoughts call young men to abandon the modern approach and look at love, marriage and sex from a different point of view. It's a call to be counter-cultural in a way the hippies couldn't have imagined. Please note: this is not a scholarly work. If you're looking for studies and footnotes, look elsewhere. This book isn't intended to prove anything. It simply offers a different perspective.
