This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING

In Brave and Bold, published in 1874, Alger relates the trials and tribulations of our hero, Robert Rushton, a poor, but honest, forthright and resolute young man. His father has, apparently, drowned at sea and, unbeknownst to Robert or his mother, has deposited a fortune-$5,000-with a ne'er-do-well factory superintendent, and father of a snobbish son-a thorn in Robert's side, who causes Robert to be fired from his factory job. The troubles escalate for poor Robert until an act of almost unbelievable heroism begin to turn the tide. But, his problems are not over. Will he and his mother ever get the $5,000? Is his father really dead? Will the superintendent's son ever get his comeuppance? Very unusual for Alger's books, Robert actually shoots an evil-doer with the intent of killing him. An action-packed story, sure to satisfy anyone's love of adventure.

The main schoolroom in the Millville Academy was brilliantly lighted, and the various desks were occupied by boys and girls of different ages from ten to eighteen, all busy writing under the general direction of Professor George W. Granville. Professor Granville was a traveling teacher, and generally had two or three evening schools in prog ress in different places at the same time. At nine, precisely, Professor Granville struck a small bell, and said in rather a nasal voice.

Excerpt from Paul Prescott's Charge: A Story for Boys Han-nah I again called Squire Newcome, separating the two syllables by a pause of deliberation, and strongly accenting the last syllable, a habit of his with all proper names. Hannah was the Irish servant of all work, who was just then engaged in mixing up bread in the room adjoining, which was the kitchen. Feeling a natural reluctance to appear before her employer with her hands covered with dough, she hastily washed them. All this, however, took time, and before she responded to the first summons, the second Han-nah delivered with a little sharp emphasis, had been uttered. This was an adventurous and exciting story. Full of mystery, suspense, and adventure. This story did not have as many lessons as most of Horatio Alger's books. Horatio Alger wrote 135 dime novels in the latter part of the 19th century. His stories were rags to riches stories illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream. Alger's stories empathize the need for hard work and honesty as a way to get ahead. Ragged Dick was his first novel published in 1867. Jack Harding was a boy of twelve. One morning as jack left to buy milk for breakfast he found a basket on the doorstep. Having found a baby girl on their doorstep seven years previously, Jack and his parents are alarmed when a lady claiming to have been the infant's nurse arrives to reclaim the child

"Ragged Dick" was contributed as a serial story to the pages of the Schoolmate, a well-known juvenile magazine, during the year 1867. While in course of publication, it was received with so many evidences of favor that it has been rewritten and considerably enlarged, and is now presented to the public as the first volume of a series intended to illustrate the life and experiences of the friendless and vagrant children who are now numbered by thousands in New York and other cities. Several characters in the story are sketched from life. The necessary information has been gathered mainly from personal observation and conversations with the boys themselves. The author is indebted also to the excellent Superintendent of the Newsboys' Lodging House, in Fulton Street, for some facts of which he has been able to make use. Some anachronisms may be noted. Wherever they occur, they have been admitted, as aiding in the development of the story, and will probably be considered as of little importance in an unpretending volume, which does not aspire to strict historical accuracy. The author hopes that, while the volumes in this series may prove interesting stories, they may also have the effect of enlisting the sympathies of his readers in behalf of the unfortunate children whose life is described, and of leading them to co-operate with the praiseworthy efforts now making by the Children's Aid Society and other organizations to ameliorate their condition.

The Town Hall in Rossville stands on a moderate elevation overlooking the principal street. It is generally open only when a meeting has been called by the Selectmen to transact town business, or occasionally in the evening when a lecture on temperance or a political address is to be delivered. Rossville is not large enough to sustain a course of lyceum lectures, and the townspeople are obliged to depend for intellectual nutriment upon such chance occasions as these. The majority of the inhabitants being engaged in agricultural pursuits, the population is somewhat scattered, and the houses, with the exception of a few grouped around the stores, stand at respectable distances, each encamped on a farm of its own. One Wednesday afternoon, toward the close of September, 1862, a group of men and boys might have been seen standing on the steps and in the entry of the Town House. Why they had met will best appear from a large placard, which had been posted up on barns and fences and inside the village store and postoffice.

Most of Alger novels begin with a teen-age son forced to leave home to earn money to support a family member, often his mother. However, the story of Frank Kavanagh starts with him on his own. His unkind Uncle and Aunt tossed him out with enough money to get from outside Hartford, Connecticut, to New York City. Frank works at a variety of jobs and has many experiences that, again, provide the reader with action and adventure from start to finish. Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 - July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.

Horatio Alger Jr.(1832 - 1899), wrote over 100 poems, short stories, and novels during his lifetime, which included four adult novels and one adult novella. He gained notoriety when his friendship with 'William Taylor Adams', a boys' author, changed Alger's interest to writing for the juvenile market. His first book for young people, "Ragged Dick, or Street Life in New York," was a huge success, securing the author's fame among the youth of America. 'Digging for Gold: a Story of California, ' is one of Horatio Alger's 'formula, rags-to-riches' books for boys. At sixteen years of age, Grant Colburn is introduced to his new stepfather, a man who could provide well for his family, yet chooses not to. Desperate to make his fortune, and assist his mother, Grant leaves Iowa on a perilous journey for the gold fields of California. Among his many adventures, Grant experiences deprivation; encounters unscrupulous characters; and makes life-long, trustworthy friends. Through his generous nature, and clever mind, Grant is able to aid many of his old friends back home, and secure financial independence for his mother.
