We travel through life feeling isolated and alone, yearning for a deep, unwavering connection with a special soul created just for us. What happens when we stumble upon such a connection but life or circumstance prevent us from exploring the one we find solace in? How do we face loss brought upon by something other than death but in fact life? Perhaps you have a heart that aches, a space that is never filled? Possibly a love or loss that haunts your minutes all day long?Same as Me was written for those who have experienced the incredible blessing of finding authentic and undeniable love, only to have life, death or unexpected circumstance snatch it away far too soon. The poetry within represents a journey of the heart, a sacred pilgrimage of discovery. An experience of being fortuitously led to a unique spirit. A spirit which somehow effortlessly mirrored its own and conclusively impacted the deepest parts of the soul. Capturing not only the euphoria that accompanies a soul connection but also, the depths of agony brought about by helplessly watching it slip away. Same as Me is an expedition of ascension. Ultimately summoning the strength to rise from the shadowy absence of what could have been, to a place of peace, indebted and grateful instead for what was.

Going Feral

Going Feral

Heather Durham

Wandering Aengus Press
2019
pokkari
In these deeply personal and intellectually curious essays, Heather Durham explores wild America weaving the unique perspectives of trained ecologist, inquisitive philosopher, and restless nomad, probing intricacies of the natural world as profoundly as she does herself. She wanders from New England vernal pools to Pacific Northwest salmon runs, Rocky Mountain pine forests to Desert Southwest sage flats in search of adventure, solace, authenticity, and belonging in the more-than-human world. Part scientifically-informed nature writing, part soul-searching memoir, Going Feral is the story of a human animal learning to belong to the earth. As one way to be the restoration architects of Eden, we can kindle a saving kinship with earth through the kind of sensory immersion, and resulting engine of discovery, described evocatively by Heather Durham's Going Feral. To go into the wild like this requires a kind of rich hurt that teaches viscerally, and Durham takes the reader through accounts of deep engagement that pay dividends in awareness, curiosity, and wisdom. She's not afraid to be afraid, not timid about the threshold to true encounter, and we are lucky for that. Read this book as a field guide to building your own agenda for going feral for moments of insight, and a life of change. --Kim Stafford, author of A Hundred Tricks Every Boy Can Do: How My Brother Disappeared "Is this loneliness for people, or for earth?" To answer, Going Feral sets out on a quest conveyed in many small epics. These are the essays kicked up by a rowdy wanderlust. . . but also won in quietness and long attentiveness to the natural world. Durham might find that she belongs in forests or in deserts, on mountain peaks waiting for raptors, or in ferny, rooty hemlock hideouts. The payoff: She sees things. Dragonfly. Butterfly. Bunny-eared bat, bison hanging out in rural restrooms, a decapitated Bambi, and more cougars than anyone has a right to. "Who am I now?"she wonders, captivated. A reader could be stirred up here, could be reminded to wander a little (or a lot), could be inspired to shut up and hunker down and let the awkward perfection of the wild reveal itself. Something like hope could appear. Something like spirit. --David Oates, author of The Heron Place (Swan Scythe) and Paradise Wild: Reimagining American Nature (Oregon State) In Going Feral, Heather Durham pries our world wide open to expose marvels everywhere--frogs in ice, kites with bumblefoot, baby possums, a cougar in her path, a bat in her palm, heart racing, the smell of sagebrush, and the clackety clack of a train --and she's a marvelous narrator, too, full of gentle humor and deep passion, rueful and joyful, and always attentive. This book is a delight --Ana Maria Spagna, author of Uplake: Restless Essays of Coming and Going Heather Durham is a nature essayist and naturalist who holds a Master of Science in Environmental Biology from Antioch New England University and a Master of Fine Arts from the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts. She currently lives and writes in a feral river valley northeast of Seattle where she serves as an administrator at Wilderness Awareness School. Her essays have been published in a variety of literary journals; Going Feral is her first book.

A lazy gardener's memoir of hope against all odds. Hardly a "How to" book; more of a "What I did and didn't do." Full of approachable poetry that is more prose-story with a LOT of humor, while addressing symbolically themes of renewal, faith, belief, grief, resurrection and hope.Author and Photographic Artist Heather J. Kirk surrounds herself with flowers - at least on the walls of her home. In spite of a love for all things botanical, she can't seem to grow a garden or sustain a flowering plant, though her patio and home boast several healthy succulents. To those who point to the mostly healthy cacti and agave, "They're used to drought," she explains. She has found a way to resolve her dilemma. At night, after chores and errands are complete, when distractions diminish, the phone no longer rings, and e-mail is exhausted, Heather works on her art. The plants and flowers are watered by her undivided attention as she paints each with her pen or camera lens.In the fertile ground of the mind, assisted by technology, Heather's garden grows in spite of periodic neglect. She tells stories in poetic form that are often funny and always unique - but with a universal message that speaks to the heart and of hope. In spite of the word 'Dead' appearing in the book's title, her writings are often built upon a foundation of belief and hope, renewal and possibility. She considers her plethora of experiences in killing most, but not all, of her plants - yet trying and trying again - as an allegory to life. True to what is implied by the book title, I Water Dead Plants: a book of poetry and belief, "It's not over 'til it's over "Life is hard. Sometimes REALLY hard, and we often fail. But even in failure we can find meaning and purpose. Then, when something REVIVES and LIVES, especially from a state of apparent death, what a wonderful gift and surprise we receive Gardens and plants are the fertile (and not so fertile) ground for Heather's stories and poems about life, relationships and faith. Resurrection is real Ultimately, Heather surrounds herself with flowers that will not wither...cultivated to perfection in the dark hours of the night. In this volume you will read of the blessings and battles with nature, and about Heather's flowers and plants, some dead and gone, some revived by water and nature, others by words. I Water Dead Plants brings true resurrection, even if "only" symbolically. May these poems bring life, hope, and a bunch of humor, to your day and to your difficult situations.
