The imperial road to Italy goes from Munich across the Tyrol, through Innsbruck and Bozen to Verona, over the mountains. Here the great processions passed as the emperors went South, or came home again from rosy Italy to their own Germany. And how much has that old imperial vanity clung to the German soul? Did not the German kings inherit the empire of bygone Rome? It was not a very real empire, perhaps, but the sound was high and splendid.
Presidencies of George Herbert Walker Bush & George Walker Bush
The Bush Presidencies represent a unique historical challenge for historians and political scientists alike. Not since John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams has the nation been led by father and son presidents. The Bushes are different from the Adamses. John Adams and John Quincy Adams ruled a good twenty-four years apart with John Quincy assuming the presidency in 1824 after a controversial election that was settled by the House of Representatives. Although John Quincy did not receive a majority of popular votes or a majority of elector votes he assumed the presidency due to the influence of the House. He was soundly defeated by Andrew Jackson four years later. In contradistinction to John Quincy Adams, George W. Bush was declared the electoral vote winner in the 2000 presidential election after a bitter contested election settled in large measure by the Supreme Court decision Bush v. Gore. Unlike John Quincy, George W. Bush won a second term albeit by the smallest margin in history [1]. George H W Bush was not successful in his re-election quest while John Adams was in his. Psychological insinuations and theories are more rampant today affecting the analysis of the Bush presidencies unlike the Adams' presidencies. However, the Bush presidencies present opportunities for comparing and contrasting father and son presidencies governing within eight years of each other. In addition, the son governs as the father watches. This new and significant book is dedicated to comparing and contrasting this father and son combination. The response to our call has been quite fruitful. There seems to be a conventional wisdom developing about this father and son relationship. It seems to emphasise differences between the father and son. These differences are largely due to the different approaches that father and son took towards Iraq. Thus it has been observed that the father is a bit disappointed in the son for the path taken in Iraq. George H W Bush is concerned for and worries about his son. Our authors find not only differences but great similarities between both presidents. This is as one might expect given blood lines, environmental upbringing, family ties, education and other variables affecting these individuals. The analysis here both adds to and contradicts the conventional wisdom view of the Bushes'. Our authors present a first attempt at analysing this unique relationship in various policy areas. The authors believe that this relationship will provide future scholars with many research questions concerning the nature of the presidency.

The Travels of Herbert T. Eustace. This is a story of allegory, political satire and humorous fiction set in a time and place many of us would wish to recognise, but have never experienced; a place where time and distance are often unreliably fluid. This is also the story of a relationship, a very special relationship between one man and a dog. Easily described as a cross between 'Animal Farm' and 'Wallace & Grommit' the two main characters, Herbert and Grumpy, become lost in a unique series of travel adventures; adventures that force them to confront prejudice and inequalities in a sometimes confusing world, a world where animals and humans are able to communicate at an equitable level.Herbert T. Eustace is single and of indeterminate age. He lives in a particular historical space, perhaps even a future space, where Nations are at peace with one another and 'pollution' is a word of the distant past. Animals and not humans are now in control of planetary destiny, ruling with a quiet, conflict free even handedness. Grumpy the dog is a companion to Herbert and in command of most proceedings making up their day to day existence. So when an unusually independent decision is made to go travelling by Herbert, Grumpy makes sure he is included in his plans. Being a qualified traveller, and having a certificate and a badge to prove it, Grumpy is sure there will be no unforeseen circumstances capable of fazing such a very capable individual. Herbert, however, is no quite so sure.

Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979) was one of the most recognizable and controversial public intellectuals throughout the 1960s until his death in the late 1970s, but today Marcuse’s work largely stands in the shadows of other Frankfurt School members and other critical thinkers. Despite having once held a prominent and influential position amongst scholars, activists, and readers in the twentieth-century, it is argued that Marcuse’s work nevertheless remains largely misunderstood. The Dialectic of Herbert Marcuse offers a new interpretation of Marcuse, one that attempts to show how Marcuse’s work has so often been turned into something else, into its opposite. In shining a light on parts of the unknown Marcuse through the use of archival material and published works, this book reveals Marcuse’s Critical Theory to be one of hope, not one of pessimism as it is so often portrayed to be. Ultimately, it is argued that Herbert Marcuse’s Critical Theory remains a vital and important body of work for present-day society and ought to be re-visited.

This book is simultaneously a biography of Admiral Herbert Victor Wiley and a history of the U.S. Navy's lighter-than-air program. As tensions rose between Japan and the U.S. over control of East Asia and the Pacific Ocean the prospects of war between the two nations increased. The Navy tracked the Germans' use of zeppelins during the First World War and saw in them an aircraft with the potential to conduct long-range reconnaissance over the oceans – something that could not be achieved by airplanes or surface ships. While rapid progress was being made in manned flight it was still young enough that the future of LTA vs. HTA flight was unknown. At the time however airships had a much greater range than airplanes making them suitable for reconnaissance. In its history the Navy had four great airships – the U.S.S. Shenandoah the U.S.S. Los Angeles the U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon. Wiley served on all four of these airships and the history of these vessels is covered through the career of Wiley. Three of the airships ended in disaster and Wiley survived the crash of two of them. The book explores in detail the events leading to the crash of each airship through examination of the records of the Navy's Courts of Inquiry that investigated the cause of each crash. The book also tracks issues surrounding the use of non-flammable helium as a lifting gas instead of highly explosive hydrogen used by the Germans. The U.S. had a monopoly on the supply of helium. While Germany sought to purchase helium from the U.S. the government board governing the sale of helium blocked is availability to Germany on the basis it might be used for wartime purposes. Dr. Hugo Eckener had run the Zeppelin works in Friedrichshaven since the end of WWI and he had a vision for LTA flight that was peaceful including international transoceanic passenger and freight services. The outbreak of WW II ended the zeppeling industry and dashed all of Eckener's dreams. Following the crash of the Macon Wiley returned to the surface fleet eventually becoming Commander of Destroyer Squadron 29 in the Asiatic Fleet shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Elgar Companion to Herbert Simon

Elgar Companion to Herbert Simon

EDWARD ELGAR PUBLISHING LTD

Honoring the life and work of Herbert Simon, this illuminating Companion provides an in-depth survey of one of the most prolific social scientists of our age. Mirroring the breadth of Simon’s studies, chapters analyze his contributions to artificial intelligence, economics, entrepreneurship, management, psychology and other fields. The comprehensive book outlines how Herbert Simon came to be the only person to receive both the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics and the Turing Award in Computer Science. Bounded rationality, satisficing and heuristic search are just a few of his seminal ideas that pioneered behavioral economics and artificial intelligence. Elucidating how Simon freed the study of human behavior from the dictates of subjective expected utility theory and Bayesian theory, chapters discuss how he instead promoted the development of empirically based theories on the behavior of individuals, organizations and machines. Interdisciplinary contributors thoughtfully explore his groundbreaking ideas, examining Simon’s influence on their own work and even their personal outlook on life. This Companion enables the ideas of Herbert Simon to live on. It is a foundational resource for scholars of disciplines such as cognitive science, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, behavioral and experimental economics, econometrics, economic psychology, industrial organization, and public administration and management.
The Music of Herbert Howells
The first large-scale study of the music of Herbert Howells, prodigiously gifted musician and favourite student of the notoriously hard-to-please Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was a prodigiously gifted musician and the favourite student of the notoriously hard-to-please Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Throughout his long life, he was one of the country's most prominent composers, writing extensively in all genres except the symphony and opera. Yet today he is known mostly for his church music, and there is as yet relatively little serious study of his work. This book is the first large-scale study of Howells's music, affording both detailed consideration of individual works and a broad survey of general characteristics and issues. Its coverage is wide-ranging, addressing all aspects of the composer's prolific output and probing many of the issues that it raises. The essays are gathered in five sections: Howells the Stylist examines one of the most striking aspect of the composer's music, its strongly characterised personal voice; Howells the VocalComposer addresses both his well-known contribution to church music and his less familiar, but also important, contribution to the genre of solo song; Howells the Instrumental Composer shows that he was no less accomplished for his work in genres without words, for which, in fact, he first made his name; Howells the Modern considers the composer's rather overlooked contribution to the development of a modern voice for British music; and Howells in Mourning explores the important impact of his son's death on his life and work. The composer that emerges from these studies is a complex figure: technically fluent but prone to revision and self-doubt; innovative but also conservative; a composer with an improvisational sense of flow who had a firm grasp of musical form; an exponent of British musical style who owed as much to continental influence as to his national heritage. This volume, comprising a collection of outstanding essays by established writers and emergent scholars, opens up the range of Howells's achievement to a wider audience, both professional and amateur. PHILLIP COOKE is Lecturer in Composition at theUniversity of Aberdeen. DAVID MAW is Tutor and Research Fellow in Music at Oriel College, Oxford, holding Lectureships also at Christ Church, The Queen's and Trinity Colleges. CONTRIBUTORS: Byron Adams, Paul Andrews, Graham Barber, Jonathan Clinch, Phillip A. Cooke, Jeremy Dibble, Lewis Foreman, Fabian Huss, David Maw, Diane Nolan Cooke, Lionel Pike, Paul Spicer, Jonathan White. Foreword by John Rutter.
The Legacy of Herbert Simon in Economic Analysis

The Legacy of Herbert Simon in Economic Analysis

Herbert A. Simon has been a leading contributor to cognitive psychology, computer science, public administration, philosophy and statistics, and is the winner of the 1978 Nobel Memorial Prize in economics. As this collection demonstrates, his impact on economics has been felt in areas as diverse as the theory of the firm and economic organization, consumer behaviour, law and economics, and environmental economics. Central to his work is the notion of bounded rationality - the mismatch between human decision-making capacities and the scale of the decision problems that people face, which results in satisficing rather than optimizing behaviour - and his belief that economic research should start from the study of actual behaviour rather than being based on convenient but unrealistic assumptions. Peter Earl's choice of articles shows both the kind of economics that emerges when Simon's philosophy is followed comprehensively, and what happens when neo-classical economists partially adopt his ideas.

She was fluent in at least three languages and was an accomplished translator and poet. That combined volume is reprinted here.
If you meet George Herbert on the road, kill him
At a time of uncertainty for the Church, this robust challenge to an outmoded style of ministry offers realistic encouragement for the future. The book's deliberately provocative title echoes: If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him; its thesis is that the shadow of George Herbert's parish ministry lingers still in the Church of England, placing an impossible burden of unreasonable expectations upon today's parish clergy. The author sets out realistically to assess the context of Herbert's life and to explore the difficulties of parish life today; he concludes by outlining a more sustainable pattern for the future. This is a book of the long view. In looking at the status and role of parish clergy it draws on the work of historians, social anthropologists, psychologists and theologians and presents their ideas in a readable and passionate style. It is neither a jeremiad nor pollyanna-ish in its analysis or its prescriptions, but rather sees the future strength of the parochial clergy to be found in a recovery of historic, renewed understandings of priestly ministry. In a climate of such uncertainty for the future of the church, it will be an encouragement for priest and people, and welcomed by both.

As Chief of Staff to Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in 1918, General Sir Herbert Lawrence played a key role in the defeat of Germany in the First World War. This biography traces his remarkable career and argues that he has a strong claim to be recognised as one of the principal architects of Allied victory. Described as ‘a man of outstanding ability both as a soldier and in business’, it is surprising that this towering individual has received such little attention. He remains one of the forgotten figures of the war. Lawrence had the distinction of being highly successful in two different fields. As a businessman he was an influential financier and chairman of Vickers, one of the world’s foremost armaments companies between the wars. In the military sphere, he was one of the very few men to rise to the top echelon of the British army without being a regular career soldier. He gave up his lucrative job as a City banker to re-join the army at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914. After the war he resumed his successful financial career, eventually becoming known as the ‘Father of the City’. Despite his significant contribution to the war effort and his accomplishments in the commercial world, historians have largely neglected Lawrence. This account uses new material to reveal the achievements of this outstanding soldier and banker. Overcoming the personal tragedy of losing his two sons during the war, he became the most senior staff officer at General Headquarters [GHQ]. He was chief advisor to Haig and acted as his right-hand man throughout the final year of the conflict.
