Southern Frontier Humor

Southern Frontier Humor

University of Missouri Press

If, as some suggest, American literature began with ""Huckleberry Finn"", then the humorists of the Old South surely helped us to shape that literature. Twain himself learned to write by reading the humorists' work, and later writers were influenced by it. This book marks the first new collection of humor from that region published in fifteen years - and the first fresh selection of sketches and tales to appear in over forty years. Thomas Inge and Ed Piacentino bring their knowledge of and fondness for this genre to a collection that reflects the considerable body of scholarship that has been published on its major figures and the place of the movement in American literary history. They breathe new life into the subject, gathering a new selection of texts and adding Twain - the only major American author to contribute to and emerge from the movement - as well as several recently identified humorists. All of the major writers are represented, from Augustus Baldwin Longstreet to Thomas Bangs Thorpe, as well as a great many lesser-known figures like Hamilton C. Jones, Joseph M. Field, and John S. Robb. The anthology also includes several writers only recently discovered to be a part of the tradition, such as Joseph Gault, Christopher Mason Haile, James Edward Henry, and Marcus Lafayette Byrn, and features authors previously overlooked, such as William Gilmore Simms, Ham Jones, Orlando Benedict Mayer, and Adam Summer. Selections are timely, reflecting recent trends in literary history and criticism sensitive to issues of gender, race, and ethnicity. The editors have also taken pains to seek out first printings to avoid the kinds of textual corruptions that often occur in later versions of these sketches. ""Southern Frontier Humor"" offers students and general readers alike a broad perspective and new appreciation of this singular form of writing from the Old South - and provides some chuckles along the way.
There is No Humor in Heaven

There is No Humor in Heaven

Dwayne E. Eutsey

UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI PRESS
2025

More than a century after his death in 1910, Mark Twain remains a lightning rod for controversy. Especially in matters of race, class, and gender, the volatile views this iconic American author expressed in classics like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn continue to provoke heated debate among antagonistic culture-war factions. However, when citing his withering attacks on religion, believers and atheists alike are often united in concluding that Twain was either a mocking skeptic or a hostile atheist. In There is No Humor in Heaven, Dwayne Eutsey challenges the persistent view of Twain as a hostile critic of religion by placing him within the prevailing liberal religious ethos of his time. From Hannibal to the western frontier and from Hartford to the wider world, Eutsey contends Twain’s vocation as a humorist was rooted in his frustrated youthful ambition to become a preacher of the Gospel. Throughout his life, his friendships with several influential liberal ministers, each of them espousing various forms of the era’s diverse progressive theology, informed not only Twain’s evolving religious worldview but his lecture performances and literary output. There is No Humor in Heaven traces unconventional theological influences on Twain ranging from African-American spirituality, Freemasonry, and frontier Unitarianism to devout Liberal Christianity, radical Free Religion, and esoteric Hinduism. Drawing from Twain’s writings, documents, personal notes, and more, There is No Humor in Heaven offers readers a radical re-examination of the spiritually creative vitality of a controversial literary giant.

Walking with Moons: Humor and Drama in Love

Kate Deford

Dreamschooner Press
2014
nidottu
Walking With Moons is engaging and, at times, poignant fiction about relationships between men and women as seen through the eyes of fifty-five women. Similar to favorite songs, each story has a unique melody that lingers. Often without any background information, author Kate Deford places you in the middle of a relationship letting you listen to defining conversations or thoughts in the lives of her characters. With masterful use of double entendres, Deford writes stand-alone stories making Walking With Moons a memorable journey that readers will want to share with partners and friends. The following descriptions are about seven different comedic works from the fifty-five brief stories included in Walking With Moons: *How will their marriage survive after she reveals her Tuesdays with the bread man? *During their first dinner together, she lies to the waiter. Can her date trust anything that follows? *An elderly couple can't understand each other, but have a perfectly nice conversation anyway. *After her husband's death, a woman uses her compact mirror to reflect on life. *Shopping for his wife, he is sure he got it right at the grocery. But is his wife sure? *A married couple learns how spiders are like diamonds. *If their relationship is a game show, will they take home the Grand Prize?
