When Gregory P. Wilson began researching his family history, he never expected to uncover an ancestor as unique and fascinating as Jonathan Roberts. A devout Quaker, Roberts wore many hats throughout his life. He was a farmer, surveyor, husband, and father. He also was a firm abolitionist, the Civil War's Quaker scout and sheriff in northern Virginia. Roberts's noncombatant military service began shortly after his secessionist neighbors tried to kill him for his political and antislavery views. Fleeing his Fairfax County home after Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard ordered his arrest, Roberts volunteered his surveying experience to the Union's Army of the Potomac, guiding troops to and from First Manassas (Bull Run). Over the course of the war, he was injured twice, once seriously while chasing John Singleton Mosby, the "Gray Ghost" of the Confederacy. When not delivering military dispatches, guiding troops, or scouting in the midst of cavalry charges, Roberts served as Fairfax County's twice-elected sheriff, responsible for everything from tax collections to murders. Wilson, like all who experience Roberts's story, can only marvel at his formidable ancestor's adventures and wonder if the outspoken Quaker appreciated the many ironies and contradictions of his remarkable life.

Despite the success and significance of Jonathan Franzen's fiction, his work has received relatively little scholarly attention. Aiming to fill this conspicuous gap, Jonathan Franzen and the Romance of Community analyzes each of Franzen's five novels in chronological order to reveal an interior logic animating his work. Integrating various formal and ideological perspectives to illuminate Franzen's work, Jesús Blanco Hidalga demonstrates that the concepts of salvation and redemption, typical of romance narratives, run throughout Franzen's fiction. Even as he re-assesses and expands the familiar interpretations of Franzen's work, Blanco Hidalga shows how these salvation narratives are used for self-legitimization not only by the characters, but by the writer himself. Dann aber empf ngt sein Haus einen fragmentierten Anruf von irgendwo au erhalb der Erde, dass "die gro e unsere Enseimada" in Gefahr sei und man deswegen die Hilfe Jonathan Simpsons beanspruchen wolle.Zuerst vermutet Jonathan ja, bei dem Anrufer handle es sich wohl um "irgendeine B ckerinnung oder so". Doch sehr schnell stellt sich heraus, dass es sich um eine ganz gro e Sache handelt. Eine ganz, ganz gro e Sache sogar. Eine Sache, die sogar mehr als ein paar Nummern zu gro f r ihn ist. Dummerweise aber liegt das Honorar f r den Fall bei immerhin 37 Mio. Zu viel, um ihn einfach links liegen zu lassen.
