Mostly famous for his botanical activities as director of the botanical expedition, Mutis lectured the first course of mathematics ever created in New Granada on his arrival in Bogota in 1762, in which he included several lectures on physics that encompassed multiple aspects of his interpretation of Newton’s experimental physics.

In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte der kubanische Dichter und Revolutionär José Martí (1853–1895) vor dem Hintergrund unermüdlicher (und nicht immer freiwilliger) Reisebewegungen ein profundes Verständnis der welthistorischen Bedingungen seiner Zeit, die ihn zum großen Denker der Globalisierung werden ließen. Auf der Grundlage des ersten Teiles dieser Monographie zur Geschichte seiner Rezeption (José Martí. Teil I: Apostel – Dichter – Revolutionär. Eine Geschichte seiner Rezeption, 1991) entfaltet dieser zweite und abschließende Teil ein Verständnis jener spezifischen Bedingungen, die es erlaubten, dass José Martí wie kein zweiter Philosoph oder Schriftsteller seiner Zeit mit den Mitteln der Literatur die dritte Phase beschleunigter Globalisierung entschlüsselte. Es war dies die im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts angesiedelte Phase, in deren Verlauf die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika zum Global Player aufstiegen und zu einer unmittelbaren Gefahr für die Insel Kuba wurden, für deren politische Unabhängigkeit von Spanien sich der kubanische Essayist ohne Rücksicht auf sein eigenes Leben einsetzte. Martí betrachtete diese Entwicklungen gleichsam von innen aus einer mobilen New Yorker Perspektive und konzipierte zugleich ein neues Zukunftsbild der Moderne, das Kuba, Lateinamerika und die USA in weltumspannenden Zusammenhängen sah. Die beiden Teile dieser Martí-Monographie sollen ein lebendiges Bild dieses ungeheuer agilen und weitsichtigen Dichters des hispanoamerikanischen Modernismo entwerfen, das die gängigen Muster und Positionen der Marti-Forschung überschreitet. This book explores the connections that José Joaquín de Mora (1783–1864)established with Britain, where he was exiled from 1823 to 1826 and was toreturn as diplomat in the following decades. His admiration for the Britishmaterialised in a series of cultural transfers aimed at the promotion and diffusionof British culture in Spain and Spanish America. He contributed to thepopularization of Bentham’s utilitarianism, the principles of British classicaleconomy, and the philosophy of the Scottish School of Common Sense; hetranslated texts by Scott and Shakespeare and wrote an unfinished versionof Byron’s Don Juan; and, above all, he presented Britain as a model for thepolitical, economic, and literary regeneration of the Hispanic world.
