SamulNori is a percussion quartet which has given rise to a genre, of the same name, that is arguably Korea’s most successful ’traditional’ music of recent times. Today, there are dozens of amateur and professional samulnori groups. There is a canon of samulnori pieces, closely associated with the first founding quartet but played by all, and many creative evolutions on the basic themes, made by the rapidly growing number of virtuosic percussionists. And the genre is the focus of an abundance of workshops, festivals and contests. Samulnori is taught in primary and middle schools; it is part of Korea’s national education curriculum. It has dedicated institutes, and there are a number of workbooks devoted to helping wannabe ’samulnorians’. It is a familiar part of Korean performance culture, at home and abroad, in concerts but also in films and theatre productions. SamulNori uses four instruments: kkwaenggwari and ching small and large gongs, and changgo and puk drums. These are the instruments of local percussion bands and itinerant troupes that trace back many centuries, but samulnori is a recent development of these older traditions: it was first performed in February 1978. This volume explores this vibrant percussion genre, charting its origins and development, the formation of the canon of pieces, teaching and learning strategies, new evolutions and current questions relating to maintaining, developing, and sustaining samulnori in the future.
Unillustrated (no pictures), 115 pagesThis book provides simple and objective training for the unbroke horse, from first-time bridling and saddling to sacking out, bridle work from the ground, pre-mount work, and your (necessarily short) first ride. You'll learn tried and true, proven methods, tips to keep you safer, and tricks to save time. - If you began your training in the round pen, this book outlines the next steps.- If you haven't round penned your horse, you can still begin with this book BUT round penning beforehand is highly recommended.Section I gets you into the saddle for a first ride. You start on the ground, you end in the saddle. Today's the perfect day to get started putting a proper foundation on your horse, a solid start that'll pay big dividends for the rest of his life.Section II offers additional related training helpful at this stage in your horse's training career. It includes a chapter designed to prep you the rider/trainer for all future rides, demonstrating specifically how to use your reins for quicker, easier results with horses of all ages. A good 90% of the issues I see at a typical riding clinic could have been prevented if the rider knew a few simple rules about how to hold (and release ) those reins. Finally, pinned to the tail of this book, you'll find 3 additional chapters, including a trick to gain your horse's respect, a tip to keep its attention--and specifically what to do when you find yourself facing a "Cinchy Horse."Only you can judge whether your colt or filly is ready for this material Though not a mandatory prerequisite, round penning training your horse (using the methods of John Lyons) is the smart thing to do before completing the material in this book. At an absolute minimum, your horse must remain calm and willing in most circumstances when being worked with (today), is thoroughly used to being handled, and you must have the ability to turn the horse toward you as well as away. You must be able to lead your horse, he isn't head shy, and you can handle his entire body, ears, and all 4 feet. If not, check out the prerequisite work found in my book "Round Pen: First Steps to Starting a Horse."This book is broken down into five "Days" or sessions, each designed for you to take at a pace you set: Day One: First-time bridlingDay Two: Bridle work from the ground (hip and shoulder control)Day Three: Sacking out and first saddlingDay Four: Pre-mount work upDay Five: First RidePlus: "The Reins: 5 Tips to Improve Your Use""Cinchy Horses"Reverse of Respect (Getting respect when you've lost it)How Do I Get My Horse's Attention? What this book does not cover: It's loaded with early-stages training for the green horse - but it does not cover elementary sacking out (again, see my book "Round Penning: First Steps to Starting a Horse"), nor does it offer training beyond the first few weeks after first saddling up. It teaches you hip and shoulder control from the ground, how to bridle and saddle up for the first time and what you need to do to take the first ride - which will necessarily be a short one. It gives you pointers as to how you should further your training (beyond the parameters of this book) but it does not cover "riding training" (turning, stopping, speed control, etc.) beyond lessons recommended for your first dozen or so "rides." If you're going to be the 1st person to sit on your colt, don't you want to do everything possible to assure success?

It was becoming increasingly difficult to focus on his studies. He spent a good portion of those soon to be summer days staring out the big window next to his desk, chin resting on his hand, dreaming of all the adventures that could await him, if only he didn't have to be in that classroom."This is a first of it's kind book and fun for kids of any age Between each chapter is a picture from the story to color. What Andrew doesn't know is that thanks to "The Main Event" Salvatore Morocco, this isn't going to be just any trip to the arena. The "Color-With-Me" series continues with "Andrew and The Main Event". This is a first of it's kind book series and fun for kids of any age Between each chapter is a picture from the story to color. Keith Alexander's mother was a Jewish woman from the Midwest who taught him early on that getting a job was not necessary. His father, a married African-American lawyer who was born in Mississippi, was cold and unapproachable. As Keith grew up, he and his sister watched their mother prove her point about making a living on the fringes of society. A single parent, Anita Alexander supported her two biracial children by stealing and forging. The story is set in Chicago - but far from the South Side which had so many black residents that it was commonly known as Bronzeville. Keith was raised a Jew in a white, liberal community and, until he was a teenager, knew few black people. Considered intelligent but undisciplined by school officials, Keith nevertheless made good grades. However, by the age of eight years old, he had also become a thief. Over the next dozen years, Keith shirked opportunities in the square world, and instead tried to follow in his mother's footsteps even as his sister, Lin, moved further away from both of them.Eventually, Lin is accepted into the University of Chicago which leaves Keith alone with his mom. The two of them work together in schemes that range from eccentric (a castle built in their backyard and a human powered flying machine) to felonious (buying houses by giving the bank forged documents). Then Keith falls in love and, rather than lose his future wife, he decides to go straight and finds redemption as a father.
