Methods in Observational Epidemiology

Methods in Observational Epidemiology

Providing a comprehensive picture of the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of non-experimental studies of both infectious and non-infectious diseases, the Second Edition of this widely used text has been thoroughly updated to take into account the numerous developments in epidemiology over the past decade. Since the first edition was published in 1986, additional sources of data have become available through the increasing use of computerized records for health-related purposes. Also, a better understanding of the uses and limitations of certain epidemiologic concepts has been gained. Modifications of traditional study designs, including nested case-control studies and case-cohort studies, are now more frequently employed. Biological markers of exposure, disease susceptibility, and disease itself are used in many studies and methods of statistical analysis have been further developed. All of these developments have been considered in writing the Second Edition. The authors cover the full scope of observational studies, describing in detail cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, and epidemic investigation. The use of statistical procedures is described in easy-to-understand terms. Sample size estimation, sampling, measurement, and measurement error are fully discussed. Each chapter in the second edition has been updated and several chapters have been expanded. Chapter 3, which summarizes sources of data on disease occurrence, includes several additional sources of data. Chapter 5, which describes modifications of traditional study designs, now contains nested case-control and case-cohort studies. Chapter 15, on other types of measurement, has been expanded to include sections on measurement in epidemiologic studies of the elderly and on biological markers since these have become major areas of epidemiologic research in recent years. Much of the material in Chapters 6, 7, and 9 on the analysis of data from epidemiologic studies is also new to this edition. Perhaps the greatest challenge for the authors in writing this Second Edition was to make some of the modern, frequently used methods of statistical analysis understandable to readers with a limited mathematical or statistical background. Although this book is intended for readers who have had introductory courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, even readers who do not fully comprehend the theory behind some of the techniques should understand the rationale for their use and be able to interpret results when they appear on a computer printout or in the literature. The Second Edition of this widely used text will serve as a practical resource for students and practitioners of epidemiology, public health and biostatistics.

Principles of Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals

Principles of Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals addresses the current "split" model of mental health care, in which physicians provide pharmaco-therapy while non-prescribing practitioners oversee other services such as psychotherapy. Bringing these two areas together, this book familiarizes mental health professionals with the medications used to treat psychiatric disorders. Prepared by world-renowned psychopharmacologists and psychiatrists, this useful resource helps non-prescribing practitioners understand when and why a given medication is appropriate to use, when it is not indicated, and what potential side effects may occur. Also discussed are the appropriate times in therapy when a referral for a medication evaluation is indicated as well as how to broach this issue with the patient. Recognizing that there are almost always a number of medications from which to choose, the authors combine research outcomes with their extensive clinical experience to highlight the important considerations in selecting one medication over another. As an educational tool, the text encourages and supports clinicians who wish to increase patients' understanding of treatment. After an introduction and overview, chapters cover: * Basics of psychopharmacology * Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder * Mood disorders * Sleep disorders * Schizophrenia * Cognitive disorders * Anxiety disorders * Personality disorders * Substance use disorders * Traumatic brain injury * Eating disorders * Side effects Every chapter includes diagnostic considerations, history of medication treatments, and emerging trends for each disease. Principles of Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals lays out what psychotherapists and other mental health practitioners need to know about psychotropic medications, giving them and their patients an invaluable guide to the full array of treatments available.

What does it mean to be a human being? David Kelsey expertly probes this complicated issue in his exhaustive and ambitious examination of theological anthropology. Divided into three parts, Kelsey's work posits that humanity's relationship to God is a basic claim of Christianity and that God actively relates to human beings in three major ways: God creates them, God is there at the end of all things eschatologically, and God reconciles humans when they are alienated from God. The result of this seminal theological work is a textured affirmation of humanity's relationship with God and with each other. It represents the culmination of decades of theological thought and is certain to be recognized as a major achievement.

David Kelsey offers a groundbreaking discussion of Christian redemption by exploring the story of a series of horrendous events that befell a young boy and his family. Sam, eight years old, was stricken with a puzzling virus that left him physically and psychologically damaged. His family suffered greatly, as well. In the face of these events, Kelsey asks, what can it possibly mean to say that in Jesus Christ, God "redeems" such situations and events?

Kyle and Kelsey Kupecky couldn't have dreamed a better love story for themselves had it been scripted by a bestselling novelist like Kelsey's mom, Karen Kingsbury. In fact, if you asked them, Kyle and Kelsey would name God as the author of their story. And they're glad they trusted him to write it for them.Unfortunately, too many girls hoping for their own happily-ever-after have taken matters into their own hands, chasing after boys when they should be chasing after God. And that inevitably leads to heartache, low self-esteem, and poor choices as girls give in to pressure from media and peers to look and act a certain way to attract guys.Kyle and Kelsey want girls to know that it's never too late to trust God with their love lives, that wherever they are, there's always hope for the future. Through their own story and the stories of others who long for love, they show girls how to put God first, how to value and protect their purity, how to deal with loneliness and bullying, and how to see themselves as God does--a one-in-a-million girl who deserves no less than God's best.

Sacred Encounters with Jesus

Sacred Encounters with Jesus

G Scott Sparrow; Morton Kelsey; Gregory Scott Sparrow

Ave Maria Press
2003
pokkari
Sacred Encounters with Jesus is a discerning and comprehensive account of how people still experience Christ. The nature of these experiences is that Jesus heals and transforms people just as he ministered to his broken-hearted and defeated disciples. The reader will enter into the miraculous experience of the terminally ill girl who was healed by Jesus' touch after her parents had already said their final good-byes, will share the shock of a psychotherapist who turned to see Jesus walking beside her one day, and will feel the incredulous wonder of a woman who reached up and touched Jesus' hair as he knelt beside her and prayed. These experiences raise the possibility that some people wilt readily accept and others will summarily dismiss -- that Jesus can be experienced as directly and as personally today as when he walked the earth 2,000 years ago.
