Visualisierung Des Wunderbaren: Unter Mitarbeit Von Laura Monique Ginzel

A richly illustrated, expansive mid-career survey of the stand-out American artist’s pioneering and influential work, with each copy featuring a unique silk-screen cover printed in Owens's studio Since the early 1990s, Laura Owens (b. 1970) has challenged traditional assumptions about figuration and abstraction in her pioneering approach to painting. Created in close collaboration with the artist on the occasion of her mid-career survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art, this inventive and comprehensive book features an incisive introduction by Scott Rothkopf, critical essays, literary texts, and short commentaries on a variety of subjects related to Owens’s broad interests, which range from folk art and needlework to comics and wallpaper. Reflections by more than twenty of Owens’s fellow artists, collaborators, assistants, dealers, family members, and friends offer an array of perspectives on her work at different periods in her life, beginning with her high school years in Ohio and ending with her current exhibition. A rich trove of more than a thousand images, drawn from the artist’s personal archive and largely unpublished before now, includes personal correspondence, journals, academic transcripts, handwritten notes, source material, exhibition announcements, clippings, and installation photographs. Strikingly, each copy also features a unique silk-screen cover printed in Owens’s studio, giving readers the opportunity to own an original work of art. Together, all of these elements provide a rare and intimate look at how an artist might make her way in the world as well as how art gets made, movements take hold, and relationships evolve over time.

The acclaimed debut graphic memoir by the author of Fetch: "a beautiful and innovative portrait" of young adulthood and confronting family secrets (NPR).When Nicole Georges was two years old, her mother told her that her father was dead. When she was twenty-three, a psychic told her he was alive. Her half-sister, saddled with guilt, admits that the psychic is right and that the whole family has conspired to keep him a secret. Sent into a tailspin about her identity, Nicole turns to radio talk-show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger for advice.Packed cover-to-cover with heartfelt and disarming black-and-white illustrations, Calling Dr. Laura tells the story of what happens to you when you are raised in a family of secrets, and what happens to your brain--and heart--when you learn the truth from an unlikely source. Part coming-of-age and part coming-out story, Calling Dr. Laura is "a tragicomic graphic memoir with a stunning indie aesthetic" (Bookslut).
The Hungarian Pocahontas – The Life and Times of Laura Polanyi Stricker, 1882–1959
This book sheds light on the life of the intellectual refugee Laura Polanyi Stricker, whose contributions to the progressive counterculture and women's movement of turn-of-the-century Austria-Hungary have remained unexplored. Stricker, the elder sister of Karl and Michael Polanyi, was a pioneering feminist and educator as well as a historian whose work on Captain John Smith earned her the epithet of the title. The book explores the family's history during a little-known period of Central European history in light of narratives of women's emancipation and Jewish assimilation. Szapor discusses patterns and networks of immigration and the experience of women refugees. By incorporating previously unexplored public and family archives, along with extensive interviews, Szapor brings to the forefront the volatility of early-twentieth-century Hungary, the political and artistic ferment of Vienna and Weimar Berlin, and the Polanyis' flight from Hitler.
A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia: The Civil War Album of Laura Ratcliffe
As the Civil War raged, Confederate brigadier general J.E.B. Stuart entrusted a secret album to Laura Ratcliffe, a young girl in Fairfax County, "as a token of his high appreciation of her patriotism, admiration of her virtues, and pledge of his lasting esteem." A devoted Southerner, Laura provided a safe haven for Rebel forces, along with intelligence gathered from passing Union soldiers. Ratcliffe's book contains four poems and forty undated signatures: twenty-six of Confederate officers and soldiers and fourteen of loyal Confederate civilians. In A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia, Charles V. Mauro uncovers the mystery behind this album, identifying who the soldiers were and when they could have signed its pages. The result is a fascinating look at the covert lives and relationships of civilians and soldiers during the war, kept hidden until now.
