The Sixth Army Materials Technology Conference, IICeramics for High Performance Applications-II I-Reliabilityll , was co-sponsored by the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and the U. S. Department of Energy, Office of Transportation Programs . The program highlighted all issues relevant to the reliability of ceramics in advanced systems. The conference emphasized programmatic reviews of the major efforts on ceramic gas turbine technology, on an international basis. The conference showed how ceramic design, materials development, materials processing, NDE, and component systems testing are being integrated and iterated in specific engine development programs . Further , the conference promoted inter­ change among the various technical disciplines working in the advanced turbine and heat engine areas. This volume will join its earlier companions, Ceramics for High Performance A lications (1974), and Ceramics for High Performance Applications-II 1 7 ,in chronicling the rapid progress being made in the applicaton of ceramics to the very demanding service environ­ ment of gas turbine and piston engines. At the last meeting of this series at Newport, R t, in March 1977, successful high temperature tests of ceramic components in test rigs were described.

In dem vorliegenden Bande wird eine Größe in den Vordergrund gerückt und eingehender Betrachtung unterzogen, die wie kaum eine andere Mög­ lichkeiten schafft, die Vielfalt der Abläufe des sozialen und ökonomischen Lebens zentral, d. h. in ihrem Schnittpunkte und in ihrer gegenseitigen Be­ einflussung und Verknüpftheit aufzuweisen: die Gemeinde. In die Betrach­ tung des sozialen und ökonomischen (verbunden mit dem geistig-kulturellen, dem rechtlichen und dem politischen) Geschehens wird die Dimension des Raumes eingefügt, die bislang allzuoft vernachlässigt, wenn nicht gar völlig übersehen wurde. Diese Einbeziehung richtet sich aber nicht etwa nur auf eine abstrahierende Betrachtung dieses Phänomens, sondern wesentlich auf seine konkreten Erscheinungsformen. Nicht spielt die Gemeinde als wissen­ schaftliche Kategorie hier eine Rolle, sondern die lebende wird analysiert und auf ihre soziale und ökonomische Relevanz untersucht. Aber sie, die Gemeinde, ist nur eine der konkreten Erscheinungsformen des Raumes; in künftigen Untersuchungen werden die weiteren (und größeren) Räume dar­ zustellen sein, die Stadtregion, das Land, der Bund. Damit hat die vorliegende Schrift den Auftakt zu dieser Gruppe von Stu­ dien darzustellen, die eine umfassende und abrundende Aufgabe haben. Sie können freilich selbst bei aller inneren Vollständigkeit wiederum nur Teil­ bereich des größeren Arbeitsfeldes sein, das nur mit den vagen Begriffen sozialer, wirtschaftlicher und kulturell-geistiger Lebensbereiche gekennzeich­ net werden kann. Es ist aus eben diesem Grunde hier und jetzt nicht möglich, eine endgültige und umfassende Ortszuweisung der hier vorgelegten Studie zu geben; sie wird zweckmäßigerweise nach Vorliegen aller Untersuchungen abschließend undsynthetisierend zugleich zu versuchen sein.
