Financial Interdependence, Digitalization and Technological Rivalries

Financial Interdependence, Digitalization and Technological Rivalries

This Palgrave Pivot investigates how the Chinese and United States financial systems are becoming increasingly interdependent, in spite of a simultaneous technological rivalry and ‘decoupling’ between the two nations. The book offers a comparative analysis of Sino-US financial systems before and after the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, demonstrating the deepening integration of China into global financial markets and its move from an indirect bank-based system towards a direct market-oriented system. It discusses the economic and technological competition that has arisen between the US and China, the two largest financial centers based on financial technology, and demonstrates the differences in national interest driving processes of digitalization and FinTech applications. At the same time, the book points to ways in which a market-oriented global financial system and the rapid international growth of financial technology make future cooperation inevitable and necessary. This book places Sino-US financial relations in a broader financial-economic perspective and will be of interest to academics, consultants and students working in banking and finance, international financial markets, comparative economics, monetary theory and Chinese business studies.

This Palgrave Pivot book analyses the current state of economic and financial relations between China and the European Union. It illustrates the ‘de-risking’ strategy that informs much of financial policy between China and the EU and argues that this differs from the policy of ‘decoupling’ that characterizes the US approach towards China. Exploring how the EU positions itself in the context of a trade and tech race between the US and China, the book sketches out a range of geopolitical challenges for Europe as it navigates current and future scenarios in global economic cooperation and competition. It discusses the concept of ‘strategic autonomy’ for the EU and explores barriers to achieving this as well as options for re-shaping relations with China. The book provides an excellent overview for researchers and policy-makers of Sino-EU economic relations today and sets them firmly in the contexts of the post-pandemic world with new global value chains, rapid technological development, and evolving environmental challenges.

The Later Prehistory of North-West Europe provides a unique, up-to-date, and easily accessible synthesis of the later prehistoric archaeology of north-west Europe, transcending political and language barriers that can hinder understanding. By surveying changes in social forms, landscape organization, monument types, and ritual practices over six millennia, the volume reassesses the prehistory of north-west Europe from the late Mesolithic to the end of the pre-Roman Iron Age. It explores how far common patterns of social development are apparent across north-west Europe, and whether there were periods when local differences were emphasized instead. In relation to this, it also examines changes through time in the main axes of contact between the various regions of continental Europe, Britain, and Ireland. Key to the volume's broad scope is its focus on the vast mass of new evidence provided by recent development-led excavations. The authors collate data that has been gathered on thousands of sites across Britain, Ireland, northern France, the Low Countries, western Germany, and Denmark, using sources including unpublished 'grey literature' reports. The results challenge many aspects of previous narratives of later prehistory, allowing the volume to present a distinctively fresh perspective.

Over the past years, business schools have been experimenting with distance learning and online education. In many cases this new technology has not brought the anticipated results. Questions raised by online education can be linked to the fundamental problem of education and teaching, and more specifically to the models and philosophy of education and teaching. Virtual Corporate Universities: A Matrix of Knowledge and Learning for the New Digital Dawn offers a source for new thoughts about those processes in view of the use of new technologies. Learning is considered as a key-strategic tool for new strategies, innovation, and significantly improving organizational effectiveness. The book blends the elements of knowledge management, as well as organizational and individual learning. The book is not just a treatment of technology, but a fusion of a novel dynamic learner (student)-driven learning concept, the management and creation of dynamic knowledge, and next-generation technologies to generic business, organizational and managerial processes, and the development of human capital. Obviously, the implications of online learning go far beyond the field of business as presented in this book.
