Public Relations as Emotional Labour

Public Relations as Emotional Labour

Inextricably linked to neoliberal market economies, public relations’ influence in our promotional culture is profound. Yet many aspects of the professional role are under-researched and poorly understood, including the impact on workers who construct displays of feeling to elicit a desired emotional response, to earn trust and manage clients. The emotionally demanding nature of this aspirational work, and how this is symptomatic of "always on" culture, is particularly overlooked.Drawing on interviews with practitioners and agency directors, together with the author’s personal insights from observations in the field, this book fills a significant gap in knowledge by presenting a critical-interpretive exploration of everyday relational work of account handlers in PR agencies. In underscoring the relationship-driven, highly contingent nature of this work, the author shows that emotional labour is a defining feature of professionalism, even as public relations is reconfigured in the digital age. In doing so, the book draws on a wide range of related contemporary social and cultural theories, as well as critical public relations and feminist public relations literature.Scholars, educators and research students in PR and communications studies will gain rich insights into the emotion management strategies employed by public relations workers in handling professional relationships with clients, journalists and their colleagues, thereby uncovering some of the taken-for-granted aspects of this gendered, promotional work.

How do women’s poetic voices disrupt cultural forms? What is the relationship between female desire and the structures of poetry? Is ‘writing the body’ essentialist?Originally published in 1991, Impertinent Voices explores these questions in a sensitive and challenging study of female poetic strategies.Looking closely at the intricate and disturbing poetry of some of the twentieth century’s greatest poets – Sylvia Plath, Adrienne Rich, H. D., Audre Lorde – Liz Yorke uses the theories of Irigaray, Cixous and Kristeva to illuminate her own clear and original analyses of the ways in which feminist understandings have been produced within poetic and cultural forms. Although they struggle with a language which has traditionally excluded female sexuality and subjectivity, women poets refuse to be silenced. Their ‘impertinent’ voices break out of the constraining myths of the prevailing culture, precipitating new beginnings and new ways of looking at the world. Detailed close readings of the poems are here matched with a clear theoretical approach, making this both an exciting exploration of new terrain and an excellent introduction to the ways in which, for women writers, theoretical models and creative practice work hand in hand.

This unique collection brings together the work of photography writer, curator, and lecturer, Liz Wells, reflecting on key themes of landscape, place, nationhood, and environmental concerns. A newly written introductory chapter contextualizes the collection. This is followed by an ‘in conversation’ with Martha Langford, Concordia University, Montreal, that brings together two leading figures in the field to respond to Wells’ thought and the themes that emerge in her writings. The essays included in this anthology draw on work from a variety of sources including artists’ photobooks, exhibition catalogues, magazines, academic books, and journals. Seventeen previously published articles, organized thematically in relation to Curation and Residency, Phenomena, Place, and Critical Reflections, demonstrate Wells’ critical and curatorial approach to research through photographic practices, reflecting a core view of art (at its best) operating to convey the implications of what is being explored and to evoke responses that are simultaneously sensory and intellectual. This collection will be essential reading for students and scholars of photography, visual culture, and art history, especially those examining landscape and environmental photography.

Mosaics, Empresses and Other Things in Byzantium
This volume consists of 15 articles published between 1991 and 2018. It falls into three sections, reflecting different areas of Liz James’s interests. The first section deals with light and colour and mosaics: four articles considering light and colour in mosaics and the making of mosaics, as well as the question of what it means to define mosaics as ‘Byzantine’ are reprinted. The second brings together four pieces on empresses: their relationships with female personifications and the Mother of God; their roles in founding and refounding buildings; and their employment as ciphers by some authors. Finally, seven papers cover a range of topics: what monumental images of saints in churches might have been for; what the differences between relics and icons might have been; how captions to images can be misleading; why touch was an important sense; how words can sometimes ‘just’ be decorative rather than for reading; why the materiality of objects makes a difference. There is also a brief section of additional notes and comments which add to, update and reflect on each piece now in 2024.Mosaics, Empresses and Other Things in Byzantium will be of interest to scholars and students alike interested in material culture, the depiction of regal women, and the use of relics and icons in the Byzantine Empire.
Postmodernism and Video Art

Postmodernism and Video Art

Liz Kim

Liz Kim traces the theories and artistic practices that articulated American experimental video through its key works and events, art critical discourse, as well as the politics of its funding and distribution during the 1970s into the 1980s, focusing on New York. This is a historical examination of the relationship between experimental video and postmodernism in the context of the early New York video scene as a foundational crucible of ideas and practices. Video grew out of both the acculturation of television, as well as the resistance against its hegemonic forms, as it enabled hybrid user-generated content. As such, video became a testing ground for postmodern thought, as it sat at the perfect nexus of mass media, art, and the politics of representation. This book historicizes the theories of video art through the shifts in representations of cultural identities, and the changes within its critical and structural supports. Through this process, chapters uncover new roots of postmodernism through historical evidence, widening the scope of the term and its concepts. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, film studies, and media studies.

This book offers a step-by-step exploration of a producer's on-set responsibilities within the context of creating a TV series or feature film. Being a successful producer requires you to have an intimate understanding of global finances, law, union rules and negotiating. The role also requires solid filmmaking skills from scriptwriting to scheduling, casting to cutting, and sound mixing to marketing. But most important of all these skills is leadership – building a team and facilitating a collection of highly trained (and often artistically temperamental) individuals to do their best collective work. This book describes best practice across geographical jurisdictions, identifying key universal principles as well as the specific and unique detail work that make a great producer. Every chapter offers meaningful advice from experienced industry experts, useful examples including real-world templates of crucial paperwork, and preventative measures that can be implemented. Producers of all backgrounds will benefit from clear, concise writing that outlines industry standard structures, protocols and processes - and why they work. This book will prove invaluable to people starting out in their careers, but also those interested in exploring producing who come from other departments – such as assistant directors, production managers and line producers – and those changing formats, such as from TV to film.
