PR FACE Le plaisir de parler de soi, si agr able la plupart des gens, n'entre absolument pour rien, je puis le dire, dans le dessein que j'ai form d' crire mes M moires. Avec Pascal, j'ai toujours trouv le moi ha ssable, et j'ai pouss cet gard la pudeur de l' me jusqu' ce point que plusieurs entre mes amis les plus chers ignorent encore, cette heure, un grand nombre des v nements et des sentiments qui ont anim ou troubl ma vie intime. Soit fiert , soit besoin imp rieux de tenir debout mon courage, je n'ai non plus jamais cherch dans mes chagrins cette compassion attendrie qui nous invite, en quelque sorte, nous plaindre des injustices du sort, la tendance de mon esprit tant de me consid rer dans l'ensemble et non part des communes tristesses. Une telle mani re de voir, lorsqu'elle nous devient famili re, diminue beaucoup l'infatuation qui voudrait entretenir de soi ses proches ou le public.

Le caract re de la femme a t , jusqu' ce jour, peu ou mal connu. La vie de Madame d'Agoult a t travers e par un drame clatant qui, apr s en avoir boulevers le d veloppement naturel, a donn naissance sa carri re d' crivain. Les chos de ce drame ont retenti dans le public, ainsi inform des v nements d'une vie priv e, dont cependant la signification morale, le path tique douloureux lui sont rest s trangers. Sans entreprendre une tude biographique qui demanderait un autre travail, rappelons bri vement les grandes lignes bien connues de cette vie, jusqu'au jour o le drame y entra.

Marie Catherine Sophie de Flavigny, comtesse d'Agoult, n e le 31 d cembre 1805 Francfort-sur-le-Main (Hesse) et morte le 5 mars 1876 Paris, est une femme de lettres fran aise connue sous le pseudonyme de Daniel Stern. Biographie Marie d'Agoult a pour parents: Alexandre Victor Fran ois de Flavigny (1770-1819), ci-devant noble fran ais et migr ; Maria Elisabeth Bethmann (1772-1847), issue d'une vieille famille patricienne 1] allemande de religion protestante, originaire de Goslar, qui figure d s 1416 dans le "Registrum parochianorum" (registres de la paroisse catholique), puis, durant plusieurs si cles parmi les bourgeois dirigeants de cette ville, et qui, pass e du catholicisme au protestantisme comme toute la population de Goslar lors de la R forme, s' tablit au XVIIIe si cle Francfort o cette famille fonda une des plus c l bres maison de banque protestante. Marie Catherine Sophie de Flavigny na t le 31 d cembre 1805 Francfort-sur-le-Main (Hesse). Elle est duqu e, de quatorze seize ans, au couvent des Soeurs du Sacr -Coeur de J sus, dans l'ancien h tel Biron (actuel mus e Rodin). Elle pouse le comte Charles Louis Constant d'Agoult, (1790-1875) le 16 mai 1827 qu'elle quitte le 19 ao t 1835 apr s lui avoir donn deux filles: Louise (1828-1834); Claire (1830-1912), qui pousera le marquis Guy de Charnac (1825-1909). En 1833 commence sa liaison Franz Liszt, dont elle a trois enfants: Blandine (1835-1862) pousera en 1857 mile Ollivier, avocat et homme politique fran ais. Ils auront un fils, Daniel; Cosima (1837-1930) pousera le chef d'orchestre Hans von B low, puis le compositeur Richard Wagner; Daniel (1839-1859), mort de la tuberculose (le roman N lida est l'anagramme de Daniel). Selon Sabine Cantacuz ne, elle aurait en outre eu un gar on, Charles d'Avila, non reconnu par Franz Liszt, adopt et lev par la famille D'Avila Parme en Italie. Ce gar on pourrait tre issu de sa liaison avec Pierre Tribert, riche propri taire foncier dans la r gion de Champdeniers; elle s journa dans son logis de Puyraveau. Selon un des fils Tribert, celui-ci aidera financi rement Marie d'Agoult en lui versant un revenu r gulier et par le fruit de diff rents placements boursiers, comme en 1866 o il placera pour elle 30 000 francs; il n'habitera pas avec elle boulevard Malesherbes, mais avec le personnel dans une maison de la rue de Chaillot, dans l'illusion d'une vie de couple . Durant le Second Empire, Marie tient un salon dans lequel se rencontrent les r publicains comme mile Ollivier, Jules Gr vy, Carnot, mile Littr ou encore l' conomiste Dupont-White. Avec l'accord de son poux elle fut oblig e de vendre ses bijoux; elle meurt le 5 mars 1876 Paris et est enterr e au cimeti re du P re-Lachaise, division 54. Sa tombe est orn e d'un monument command par Tribert (maquette en pl tre au mus e d'Agesci Niort).
