The present publication is the outcome of a research project undertaken at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, which aimed to complete a comprehensive, comparative legal stocktaking and analysis of international restitution practice as well as its underlying concepts of justice. How did the late Roman Empire operate in rural areas, where most of its subjects lived? The papyri from Egypt provide glimpses of state activity at the local level, how the countryside responded to it, and thus how "empire" looked on the ground. Since a major motivator for state activity at the local level was tax collection, Taxes and Authority in the Late Antique Countryside homes in on the pagarchs: key fiscal actors at the intersection between provincial, city, and village institutions from the fourth through the seventh centuries CE. The book contextualizes the pagarchs’ dealings, backgrounds, and networks from the imperial sphere to the village level, exploring topics such as tax collection procedures in the villages, central accounting and staffing in the cities, the competition of local aristocrats over the countryside, official careers, and local agency versus imperial policy. The result is an analysis of the social mechanics of the fiscal regime in a region of the imperial periphery. Exploring the abundant and diverse papyrological source material, this book offers a uniquely detailed insight into the dynamic relationship between the Roman Empire and local communities in late antiquity.

Die Studie widmet sich signifikanten Ver nderungen innerhalb des literarischen Feldes zum Erz hlgegenstand Jugoslawien: Zwischen der Ver ffentlichung von Peter Handkes Winterlicher Reise (1996) und Sasa Stanisics Erz hlwerk Herkunft (2019) ist eine diskursive Verschiebung von 'fremden', externen Perspektiven auf den (post-)jugoslawischen Kulturraum zu autobiographischen Erz hltexten zu beobachten, was sich besonders gut an der Handke-Nobelpreis-Debatte im Jahr 2019 erkennen l sst. Den Untersuchungsgegenstand der Studie bilden Erz hltexte, die auf eigenen oder famili ren Erfahrungen von Flucht und Migration dreier Autor: innen aufbauen: Sasa Stanisic, Jagoda Marinic und Marko Dinic. Zentrales Anliegen ist es, die Vielfalt an postjugoslawischen Reisedarstellungen einer kulturellen in-group sowohl in ihren Themen und Motiven als auch in ihren formal sthetischen Merkmalen herauszuarbeiten und auszudifferenzieren. Stanisic, Marinic und Dinic stellen ein interkulturelles Erfahrungswissen bereit, das zur Aufkl rung ber (post-)jugoslawische Geschichte im deutschsprachigen Raum beitr gt. Was macht das Besondere der menschlichen Lebensform aus? Wie k nnen wir es verstehen, dass unsere Art wie alle anderen nat rlich evolviert ist und dennoch als einzige Art die F higkeit entwickelt hat, unter dem Anspruch der Freiheit und in reflexiver Distanz zu handeln, damit aber die Umwelt auf eine Welt hin zu transzendieren? Jung argumentiert, dass sich diese Fragen nur beantworten lassen, wenn man philosophische, evolutionstheoretische und kognitionswissenschaftliche Ans tze aufeinander bezieht. Der Schl ssel hierf r ist der Begriff der Bedeutung. Alle Lebewesen erfassen ihre Umwelt im praktischen Umgang mit ihr als bedeutsam. Auch der Geist des Menschen ist essentiell verk rpert und basiert auf erlebten Bedeutsamkeiten. Die F higkeit zur symbolischen Artikulation und kulturellen Weiterentwicklung solcher Lebensbedeutungen erlaubt es ihm aber auch, die lokale Umwelt zu transzendieren und dabei Werte, Normen und objektive Geltungsanspr che zu entwickeln. Eine zeitgem e Anthropologie muss in der Lage sein, diese qualitativen Besonderheiten des menschlichen Geistes als Resultate von Naturprozessen verst ndlich zu machen. Sie verbindet methodischen Naturalismus mit Offenheit f r die Transzendenz des Geistes ber die Umwelt. Damit leistet der Autor einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einem nichtreduktionistischen Verst ndnis des Menschen, das Leib und Geist nicht dualistisch trennt, sondern ihre spannungsvolle Einheit sichtbar macht.
