Art History after Modernism

Art History after Modernism

Hans Belting; Caroline Saltzwedel; Mitch Cohen; Kenneth J. Northcott

University of Chicago Press
2003
sidottu
"Art history after modernism" does not only mean that art looks different today; it also means that our discourse on art has taken a different direction, if it is safe to say it has taken a direction at all. So begins Hans Belting's iconoclastic reconsideration of art and art history at the end of the millennium, which builds upon his earlier volume "The End of the History of Art?". "Known for his striking and original theories about the nature of art", according to the "Economist", Belting here examines how art is made, viewed and interpreted today. Arguing that contemporary art has burst out of the frame that art history had built for it, Belting calls for an entirely new approach to thinking and writing about art. He moves effortlessly between contemporary issues - the rise of global and minority art and its consequences for Western art history, installation and video art, and the troubled institution of the art museum - and questions central to art history's definition of itself, such as the distinction between high and low culture, art criticism versus art history, and the invention of modernism in art history. 48 black and white images illustrate the text, perfectly reflecting the state of contemporary art. With "Art History After Modernism", Belting retains his place as one of the most original thinkers working in the visual arts today.

For readers seeking scientifically proven methods for permanent weight loss that enable them to still have fun and enjoy their lives, this accessible, entertaining, and humorous book provides valuable insights and ideas. Laugh Yourself Thin: Making Happiness, Fun, and Pleasure the Keys to Permanent Weight Loss argues a unique thesis. Laughter, its physician author proclaims, is the key to losing weight. Losing weight, she goes on to say, will not necessarily lead to happiness, but happiness does lead to weight loss. Offering an approach to weight loss that is grounded in sound medical research, her book shows readers how increasing joy and fun decreases stress and negative emotions—resulting in permanent thinness. Laugh Yourself Thin covers the entire spectrum of weight loss, but pays closest attention to positive attitude and behavior in activity and eating. The first section discusses the relationship of thought and behavior to weight loss, the second deals with the intake of calories, and the third details issues in metabolism and activity. Enriched with healthy doses of funny, true stories, this revolutionary book proves that, when it comes to getting thin, laughter is the best medicine.

I think it was Camus that said, "In order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion." Actually, I know the great Albert Camus said this, because we have the omnipotent Google to verify such claims. This particular statement by him seemed fitting for a brief description of what "Deep Survival" is about, as much as anything can be about something anyway. And much like Sisyphus or really any of us, if we are to find "meaning" in anything at all we must accept the absurd. Any and all human acts hold equal potential to be meaningless or fulfilling, we create the value of all our treasures. But certainly, no treasure can be worth anything without a journey and not without strife. In this vain, I have polished a few of my stone words, rolled them up an infinite incline, and will be dropping them into the beautiful abyss of your eyes. I hope with no expectations, that all of you will enjoy it somehow. In stores Spring 2018. Thanks for reading. XXXXX Ryan Morrow XXXXX

Explore the intersection of tarot, artistic creativity, and technical innovation in The Artist Decoded Tarot, a first-of-its-kind deluxe deck and guidebook set from author of Amenti Oracle Jennifer Sodini and artist Yoshino. Art, myth, and storytelling have guided spiritual exploration throughout history, and the intersection of technology and spirituality unveils captivating connections between ancient wisdom and contemporary innovation. In this singular tarot deck, author Jennifer Sodini and artist Yoshino delve deep into this intersection, revealing to readers that the common artery through which this wisdom flows is the human imagination-that vast inner landscape of infinite creative potential that is always in dialogue with time and space. Through the thoughtfully designed cards and accessibly written guidebook, The Artist Decoded Tarot has been designed to tap into that conversational reservoir and reveal the artist within each of us, while creating a bridge toward higher Worlds, by fusing the symbolic language of the Tarot and the artistic medium of synthography-or generative AI prompting-paired with digital collage.Tarot practitioners and novices alike will find a new approach to the cards-one that explores the codes of texts from mystical traditions like Kabbalah, alongside individual artistic prompts tailored to the message of each of the Major and Minor Arcana. This set includes: - Deluxe tarot package. Includes 78 cards (3 X 5 inches), full-colour guidebook (4 3/4 X 6 inches, 192 pages), inner card box, and magnetic closure keepsake outer box. - Fully illustrated guidebook. The full-colour guidebook includes images of each card, alongside card descriptions and tailored prompts, as well as sample card spreads to guide your practice. - Foreword by Mitch Horowitz. The guidebook includes an illuminating and contextualizing foreword from PEN award-winning author and thinker Mitch Horowitz.A note on packaging: In order to help honour our planet and reduce waste, we have only shrink wrapped the interior cards, rather than the keepsake box. Please feel confident that your product is not defective or used, but rather represents a step we are taking to protect our collective home. When you open your deck, you will find that the actual cards inside the box are shrink wrapped for protection and to ensure first use by the buyer. A note on art creation: The tarot card images in this deck were developed in collaboration between artist and technology. They were created in part by generative AI.

Many useful insights into the publishing process. . . . This book does provide an aspiring author with an excellent basic overview of the publishing system and how it works to serve both authors and publishers. It speaks to the 'business of publishing' by offering concrete examples. . . . The chapter on 'writing a book' is full of useful guidelines on what constitutes a publishable book, including edited works and those derived from dissertations. . . . The sample book proposal contained in this book is invaluable for any author, including those who may have prepared such presentations in the past--and especially for those who have not presented a book for publication. The chapter on 'the publishing contract' contains much that will dispel the mystery associated with this document; it also advises the author as to which portions of the contract are negotiable and which usually are not. . . . The authors are right on target when they urge authors to view the 'author/publisher relationship as a partnership' that builds lasting ties between the two parties. . . . Especially useful is the chapter on 'the production process' and the schematic drawings illustrating the sequence of the various steps in that process. . . . The 'marketing' chapter makes a valuable distinction between trade, text, and scholarly books. . . . This book is recommended for authors of professional and scientific works for its careful and comprehensive analysis of the publishing process as it applies to them. . . Scholarly authors should read the book and will profit from doing so. --Publishing Research Quarterly "If you are thinking about or planning on writing a book, I heartily recommend that you read this one. The authors are members of the Editorial Acquisitions and Production Staff of Sage Publications and obviously know whereof they speak. They take the reader through all of the steps of publication from the initial idea to helping with the marketing and provide what sounds to be like insider advice." --Academic Bookshelf Your colleague down the hall just had her book accepted by a respected publisher based upon a 3-page outline. You have been writing your magnum opus for a decade and have only a wall full of publisher's rejections to show for it. What are you doing wrong? Getting Your Book Published is a practical guide for scholars and other professionals to the ins and outs of the academic and professional book publishing world. It will help you determine whether your idea can be turned into a book, how to find the right publisher and convince them to publish your work, and how to evaluate a contract and work with your editor. It outlines the production process and explains how you can help the publisher provide the most effective marketing possible. Sample proposals, letters, and other tools will help you get a foot in the door . . . so that the next book published is yours.

Tedd Arnold--the guy who does Fly Guy--and his storyteller friends are bringing folktale tomfoolery into the 21st Century, with this Geisel Honor-winning companion to Noodlehead Nightmares. Although Mac and Mac are as hollow-headed as, well, noodles, they're always coming up with brilliant schemes. For instance, they're absolutely certain Mom will bake them a cake if they gather some firewood for her. But when their friend Meatball offers to trade them a handful of firewood seeds, the gullible brothers can't foresee what will happen next. . . Illustrated by Tedd Arnold, whose Fly Guy series is a kid favorite, this graphic novel is perfect for comic fans and reluctant readers, with short, funny chapters following Mac and Mac through ridiculous adventures. Full of wordplay, jokes, and slapstick humor, the Noodlehead series is sure to delight. Based on traditional world folktales and stories of fools, the Noodleheads also encourage critical thinking, inviting kids to use their noodles- spotting the holes in the brothers' grand plans, and anticipating how things will go awry. Source notes from professional storytellers Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss provide more information about the traditional stories that inspired Mac and Mac's mishaps, showing how these comic motifs feature in folklore and legends all around the world and offering opportunities for further reading.
