If you think you know what it's like to be me you are seriously deluded. Is it appropriation to invent a voice - or is it an act of empathy? If a playwright's job is to make dialogue, is there a limit to how many characters she / he / they are entitled to invent? Who can these people be? And what if an invented voice says things that even the author would prefer not to hear? With characteristically provocative humour, Martin Crimp's latest work brings 299 unique characters to the stage. Not One of These People, a co-production between the Royal Court Theatre, Carte blanche, and the Carrefour international de théâtre, premiered at Théâtre La Bordée, Québec City, in June 2022, and at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in November 2022.

The definitive story of Anna May Wong, the first East-Asian Hollywood star, and how she blazed a trail for the Chinese diaspora. Set against the glittering backdrop of Los Angeles in the gin-soaked Jazz Age and the rise of Hollywood, this debut book celebrates Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star, to bring an unsung heroine to light and reclaim her place in cinema history. In her time, Anna May was a legendary beauty, witty conversationalist, and fashion icon. Plucked from her family's laundry business in Los Angeles, she rose to stardom in Douglas Fairbanks's blockbuster The Thief of Bagdad. Fans and the press clamored to see more of this unlikely actress, but when Hollywood repeatedly cast her in stereotypical roles, she headed abroad in protest. Anna May starred in acclaimed films in Berlin, Paris, and London; she dazzled royalty and heads of state across several nations, leaving trails of suitors in her wake. She returned to challenge Hollywood at its own game by speaking out about the industry's blatant racism. She used her new stature to move away from her typecasting as the China doll or dragon lady, and worked to reshape Asian American representation in film. Along with unprecedented access to Anna May's personal effects courtesy of the Wong family, in Not Your China Doll, Katie Gee Salisbury also draws on her own experiences as an Asian American woman to showcase the vibrant, radical life of a groundbreaking artist.

Not Waving but Drowning and other poems
'Cheerful, brutal, beautiful! Stevie Smith is the wildest poet of them all.' Nick Cave'I better say straight out that I am an addict of your poetry, a desperate Smith addict.'Sylvia Plath, writing to Stevie Smith, 1962'Revolutionary, wild, and fierce.' Ali SmithStevie Smith was not only a famous poet in her lifetime but a poet before her time, a radical eccentric who relished the performance of poetry as sung and spoken word. The poems are distinctly unsentimental as she casts the 'eye of an anarchist' over propriety and convention, finding comedy in the tragic and tragedy in the comic. She asks the questions we don't have the nous or courage to ask, speaking for the lonely, the troubled and the trapped, and for any of us who at one time or another have found ourselves not waving but drowning.

This traces the effect of kibbutz life on four disillusioned volunteers who arrive for a working holiday and find the work more like hard labour. Two of the English, Pete and Dave, soon alienate themselves by their foul-mouthed, high-spirited behaviour. The third, Carrie, nervous and lonely, desperately tries but cannot relate to either her compatriots or the Israelis and it is left to Cambridge drop-out Mike to convey something of the frustration and impotence felt by many of the young of modern England.2 women, 4 men

These are hunting stories about a time in Texas when the ranches were big and rough and the men that hunted on them were the same. There were few roads and no deer stands. Wild game feeders and high fences did not exist. No one knew what a jeep was until after the Great War and no one ever heard of a hunting lease. You walked all day with nothing to eat and drank water out of the creek if there was one. You sat on the damp ground or crawled up in the tree and hung your leg over a branch until the cramp got so bad you had to get down. When you killed something you field-dressed it and marked the spot so you or a ranchhand could find it later. Some of the ways we hunted were unorthodox and that's just the way it was.
