In the first book systematically to give evidence of conjugal co-rule at an Italian Renaissance court, and the first full length scholarly study of Isabella d'Este and Francesco Gonzaga, Sarah Cockram shows their relationship in an entirely new light. The book draws on (and presents) a large amount of unpublished archival material, including almost unprecedented surviving correspondence between and around these Renaissance princely rulers. Using these sources, Cockram shows Isabella and Francesco's strategic teamwork in action, illuminating tactics of collaboration and dissimulation. She also reveals behind-the-scenes diplomatic activity; court procedures; sexual politics and seduction; gift-giving and network-building; rivalries, intrigues and assassinations. Several epistolary themes emerge: insights into the couple's communication practices and double-dealing, their use of intermediaries, and attention to security matters. This book's analysis of Isabella's co-rule with her husband, supported by other members of the Gonzaga dynasty, sees her sometimes in the role of subordinate partner, sometimes guiding the couple's actions. It shows how, despite appearances at times, the couple shared common diplomatic policy as well as human, material, and cultural resources; joint administration; and the exercise of authority and justice. Thus emerges a three-dimensional picture of the mechanisms of power and power sharing in the age of Machiavelli.

This is an enlarged and revised second edition of a book first published in 1978 and reprinted twice since then. The new edition includes updates to all the original chapters, plus two new chapters on developments in superresolution techniques and their application to direction-finding arrays. Modern direction finders, capable of measuring elevation angles as well as azimuth angles on the components of multi-ray wavefields, have become powerful tools for research in ionospheric physics and HF radio propagation. The complexity of the problem of resolving closely-spaced rays requires the combined use of wide aperture antenna arrays, multichannel receiving systems and sophisticated digital processing techniques. Published research papers over the last 12 years provide a rich source of information on the development of superresolution algorithms for use in radar, sonar, geophysics and spectral analysis, as well as radio direction finding. Dr Gething reviews the important methods and results, showing how some of the new techniques are related to the wavefront analysis methods described in the first edition. The text is illustrated with computer plots of model wavefields and contain important results on the loci of constant phase and amplitude, and on the statistical properties of bearing-error distributions for specified models. The collection and interpretation of ionospheric data for the purpose of mode identification, and the statistical theory of DF plotting algorithms, are also discussed. Wavefront analysis and superresolution may be regarded as extensions to classical array theory. The basic principles are widely applicable and should therefore be of interest to research workers in radar, sonar, radioastronomy and adaptive array theory, as well as HF radio direction finding.

Dies Buch soll in die Theorie des psychologischen Tests einftihren. Sowohl ftir Psychologen, die neue Tests entwerfen, als auch ftir solche, die in ihrer Higlichen Praxis Tests anwenden, ist die Vertrautheit mit den Begriffen der Testtheorie eine unerlaBliche Voraussetzung. Aber diese Einftihrung dtirfte auch ftir jene Leser aufschluBreich sein, die sich aus rein wissenschaftstheoretischem Interesse oder weil die Er- gebnisse psychologischer Untersuchungen auch in ihrem Beruf eine Rolle spielen, tiber die Theorie und tiber die Anwendungsmoglichkeiten psychologischer Test orientieren mochten. DaB tiber die psychologischen Tests viele falsche Vorstellungen verbreitet sind, die bald zu tibertriebenen Erwartungen, bald zu grundsatzlicher Ab- lehnung geftihrt haben, liegt einerseits an der ungentigenden Sachkennt- nis des Laien, anderseits aber auch an dem mangelnden Verantwortungs- bewuBtsein vieler Testbenutzer selbst, die einwandfreie Tests und unzu- verlassige, nicht validierte Tests unbedenklich durcheinander benutzen und so dazu beitragen, daB ein verschwommenes image der psycho- logischen Tests entsteht. Ich hoffe, daB die hier dargestellte Theorie des Testens zeigen wird, welche Ftille und welche Vielfalt von Problemen dabei bertihrt werden und zu welchen Fehlurteilen eine Simplifizierung dieser Probleme ftihren kann. Ich mochte den Leser davon tiberzeugen, daB es allein die wissen- schaftlichen Normen und die methodischen Forderungen sind, durch die sich eine verantwortliche psychologische Anwendung von Tests von der Scharlatanerie unterscheidet. In dieser EinfUhrung habe ich aus dem groBen Gebiet psychologischer Test- untersuchungen eine exemplarische Auswahl getroffen, in der ich die wich- tigsten und die am haufigsten vorkommenden Probleme bespreche.
