The book is about a teapot named Ms.T. She receives abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to care for her that is so traumatic that she loses her identity and voice. She experiences hopelessness, abandonment, rejection, and is eventually discarded. Another family then finds her and takes the time to care for and restore her. Ms. T depicts children who have been placed into the care of a family for nurturing and support, but instead have suffered abused. Her story speaks to the heart and wounds of many children in our society. It is written delicately to help children navigate through the trauma of physical and sexual abuse. It also provides vocabulary to encourage children to speak about their trauma as a start to their healing process. Children will recognize that there are hands that hurt as Mr. Eldredge did and hands that heal like Sandie's father who restored her again.

Will There Also Be Singing, Pauletta Hansel's tenth collection, contains poems of witness and protest. Poems include those written in the voices of those living and working in Hansel's native Appalachia, as well as those exploring this nation's current racial, political and class injustices and divisions. The poet speaks to her own culpability and complicated grief about a land she loves and for whose future she fears."Pauletta Hansel's Will There Also Be Singing? could be subtitled 'Found Poems, Centos, and Other Songs Woven from the World Around Us.' In this collection of poems, the former (and first) Poet Laureate of Cincinnati writes a poetry of witness about her native Appalachia and her country as a whole that is also a master class on how to work with collage. Much like Kentucky artist Robert Morgan, whose sculptures are made from an accretion of found objects, Hansel takes news clippings and historical essays, poems, and social media posts and places them next to each other and layers them on top of each other until a poem emerges."-Jeremy Paden, Professor of Spanish, Chair, Humanities Division, Transylvania University, and author of World As Sacred Burning Heart

Understory

Pauletta Hansel

THE UNIVERSITY PRESS OF KENTUCKY

For Pauletta Hansel, who grew up in the coalfields of southeastern Kentucky, the history of her female ancestors traces back to her tenth great-grandmother, a "tobacco bride" shipped from England to Jamestown, Virginia, in exchange for 150 pounds of tobacco leaves. This family line migrated from the Chesapeake Bay area to the mountains of North Carolina and, eventually, into southwestern Appalachia. But as Hansel explored archives and artifacts, she realized this ancestry was incomplete, memorialized solely through male lines. Understory uses poetry and prose to chronicle the untold history of Hansel's foremothers through genealogical investigation, her travels across the US, and her own memories. With a captivating and contemplative voice, Hansel weaves found language with verse to make visible those whose lives have been hidden between the lines of documents left behind. She does not shy away from hard truths, such as her family's displacement of Indigenous people, enslavement of those of African descent, and support of the Confederacy. In revealing generations of women whose experiences can only be understood through others' narratives, Understory is not simply one family's story—it is a microcosm of Appalachian, American, and women's histories.

Chicago has long been regarded as home to some of the world's most impressive architecture.Responding to the Great Fire of 1871, Chicagoans rebuilt the city, creating a radically new architectural style. Chicago continued to grow and evolve through the 20th century, but many of its architectural masterpieces have been lost, some to modernization, and others simply to the ravages of time. Forgotten Chicago preserves the unique story of many of Chicago's famed architectural wonders. Included are the old Northwestern Train station, the Coliseum, the Chicago Stadium, old Comiskey Park, and Soldier Field. Many of the smaller treasures of the city will also be found here, including some of Chicago's most famous diners.
Computational Solution of Large-Scale Macroeconometric Models
This book is the result of my doctoral dissertation research at the Department of Econometrics of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. This research was also partially financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grants 12- 31072.91 and 12-40300.94). First and foremost, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Manfred Gilli, my thesis supervisor, for his constant support and help. I would also like to thank the president of my jury, Professor Fabrizio Carlevaro, as well as the other members of the jury, Professor Andrew Hughes Hallett, Professor Jean-Philippe Vial and Professor Gerhard Wanner. I am grateful to my colleagues and friends of the Departement of Econometrics, especially David Miceli who provided constant help and kind understanding during all the stages of my research. I would also like to thank Pascale Mignon for proofreading my text and im proving my English. Finally, I am greatly indebted to my parents for their kindness and encourage ments without which I could never have achieved my goals. Giorgio Pauletto Department of Econometrics, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland Chapter 1 Introduction The purpose of this book is to present the available methodologies for the solution of large-scale macroeconometric models. This work reviews classical solution methods and introduces more recent techniques, such as parallel com puting and nonstationary iterative algorithms.
An Empire of Small Places

An Empire of Small Places

Robert Paulett

Britain’s colonial empire in southeastern North America relied on the cultivation and maintenance of economic and political ties with the numerous powerful Indian confederacies of the region. Those ties in turn relied on British traders adapting to Indian ideas of landscape and power. In An Empire of Small Places, Robert Paulett examines this interaction over the course of the eighteenth century, drawing attention to the ways that conceptions of space competed, overlapped, and changed. He encourages us to understand the early American South as a landscape made by interactions among American Indians, European Americans, and enslaved African American laborers.Focusing especially on the Anglo-Creek-Chickasaw route that ran from the coast through Augusta to present-day Mississippi and Tennessee, Paulett finds that the deerskin trade produced a sense of spatial and human relationships that did not easily fit into Britain’s imperial ideas and thus forced the British to consciously articulate what made for a proper realm. He develops this argument in chapters about five specific kinds of places: the imagined spaces of British maps and the lived spaces of the Savannah River, the town of Augusta, traders’ paths, and trading houses. In each case, the trade’s practical demands privileged Indian, African, and nonelite European attitudes toward place. After the Revolution, the new United States created a different model for the Southeast that sought to establish a new system of Indian-white relationships oriented around individual neighborhoods.
