The Alcoholic Family

The Alcoholic Family

Basic Books

This pathbreaking book paints a radical new picture of alcoholism, offering powerful evidence that most chronic alcoholics live out their lives in intact, relatively quiet family environments. The authors show, however, that living in an alcoholic family,in which alcoholism is the central theme around which family life is organized, has profound effects on family members both drinkers and nondrinkers.

Testing Character Evolution Models in Phylogenetic Paleobiology

Testing Character Evolution Models in Phylogenetic Paleobiology

pokkari
Macroevolutionary inference has historically been treated as a two-step process, involving the inference of a tree, and then inference of a macroevolutionary model using that tree. Newer models blend the two steps. These methods make more complete use of fossils than the previous generation of Bayesian phylogenetic models. They also involve many more parameters than prior models, including parameters about which empiricists may have little intuition. In this Element, we set forth a framework for fitting complex, hierarchical models. The authors ultimately fit and use a joint tree and diversification model to estimate a dated phylogeny of the Cincta (Echinodermata), a morphologically distinct group of Cambrian echinoderms that lack the fivefold radial symmetry characteristic of extant members of the phylum. Although the phylogeny of cinctans remains poorly supported in places, this Element shows how models of character change and diversification contribute to understanding patterns of phylogenetic relatedness and testing macroevolutionary hypotheses.

Reception studies have made film audiences increasingly visible, while surveys track trends and policymakers gather information about audience preferences and demographics. But little attention has been paid to the specific contextual relationships and interactions between films and individuals that generate and sustain audiences. This monograph develops the idea of audiences as interactive and relational, introducing three innovative concepts: ‘personal film journeys’, five types of audience formations and five geographies of film provision. A major challenge of audience research is how to capture the richness of people’s social and cultural engagement with film. To achieve this, the book uses an innovative mixed-methods research and computational ontology. It develops ground-breaking theory and concepts and an innovative methodology based on an extensive data-set derived from the under-researched area of British regional film audiences.

Although South Carolina's colonial charter promised a safe harbor of religious freedom for those who were oppressed, eighteenth-century religious minorities in the colony found their rights were subjugated to those of the Anglicans. ""The Dawn of Religious Freedom in South Carolina"" contains eight essays by historians and legal scholars that trace the quest for religious equality by Protestant dissenters, Huguenots, Jews, Quakers, Afro-Carolinians, and Roman Catholics. Uncovering the historical roots of the separation of church and state, the contributors use South Carolina's experience to illustrate that religious freedom is more secure when widely shared. South Carolina was a beacon of religious freedom when compared to many other North American colonies. The contributors recount the incremental steps that culminated with the 1790 Constitution's grant of ""free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference."" Separate chapters revisit the experiences of the Huguenots, who found themselves caught in a political crossfire between Anglicans and Protestant dissenters; the Quakers, who ultimately left the state because of their inability to reconcile with the principles of a slaveholding society; the Afro-Carolinians, who created ""psychological living space"" through religion while their masters watched nervously for signs of rebellion; and the evangelicals, whose emphasis on equality before God brought ideas about egalitarianism to South Carolina society. The volume's contributors also enumerate Catholic and Jewish efforts to gain religious equality, and recount the leading roles played by such individuals as Jewish patriot Francis Salvador, Catholic bishop John England, and statesman Charles Pinckney.

"Usability makes everything easier, except the job of the developer. Usability is not easy. There are no macros to run on Macromedia Flash projects to apply usability. Applying usability requires a change in the development process. It requires a new method of thinking about a project from start to finish." - Chris McGregor, Macromedia Usability White Paper. With the latest MX release, Flash has taken a significant step towards becoming the standard tool for delivery of web content. This brings with it a whole range of new challenges for those working with Flash, the biggest of which is making sure that their Flash material can be easily used by everyone that it is intended for. This book isn't about stifling flair and creativity, this is about making sure that your viewers stick around to appreciate the fruits of your creativity (and your hard work), and that your skills stay current in a quickly changing web landscape. As suggested above, Usability is not an easy topic when you depart from crass dictatorial statements and into the real world. This book exists to take the role of the user's web experience seriously and to show you how to remember them when designing. As such, it could be the most valuable Flash MX book you'll read this year. Book Info With this guide you will discover how to succeed with Flash in the business environment that demands economy, efficiency, and effectiveness from your web site. Covers Flash MX. Softcover. The legal profession, like so many other fields, has continued to reel from the deep-reaching and significant impact of the 2008 financial crisis. In the years following the crash, a general downward turn in the demand for legal services compelled firms to tighten their belts, make tough decisions, and come up with innovative strategies in order to survive. One of these was an increased focus on profitability and different means of managing and improving it, a relatively new development for the legal industry. However, in recent years there have been small but positive signs of improvement, manifested in a gradual pick-up in client engagement, as global economies continue to slowly but steadily recover from the crash. It is definitely a better time to be a lawyer, as latent demand begins to manifest in parallel with growing client confidence in a stabilizing market, fast-paced disruptive technological innovations, and significant changes in laws and regulations. However, this does not mean that firms can afford to be complacent. The legal landscape continues to be in flux, and improvement is slow. Increased revenue and client demand does not come to firms that do not proactively seek it, nor is it achieved by those who are not applying innovative and cutting-edge techniques and strategies to the management of their firm. Of course, delivering the best service to clients should always be a top priority; however, there should also be an emphasis on running the firm like a business, which includes intensive scrutiny of expenditure and coming up with new and inventive ways to generate profit. Managing and growing a firm's profitability should not just be an exercise for difficult economic periods, but instead must be a priority at all times. Rather than being perceived as an irksome bolt-on, it is necessary to see it as a great opportunity in these times of increased business. Existing and persistent cultural norms amongst lawyers, however, means that the reform of current business practices does not always come naturally. Nor is it necessarily easy to find the right practical advice that can carry a firm through the transition. Emerging Approaches to Law Firm Profitability aims to be the ideal tool to assist with implementation, providing essential guidance for those seeking new means of maximizing their firm's capacity. Featuring advice and reflections from a wide variety of contributors, ranging from business and finance professionals to thought leaders and consultants, this book offers in-depth, intensive insight into the challenges generated by today's dynamic and hypercompetitive legal landscape. Most importantly, Emerging Approaches to Law Firm Profitability moves past the identification of these obstacles and supplies original, innovative ways of tackling them. Expert guidance is complemented by compelling case studies and effective real-world examples, supplying principles that can be applied to firms of any size or capacity.

Measures of Active Labor Market Policy - such as training, wage subsidies, public employment measures, and job search assistance - are widely used in European countries to combat unemployment. Little, however, is known about what each country can learn from experiences in other countries. This study provides novel insight on this important policy issue by discussing the role of the European Commission's Employment Strategy, reviewing the experiences made in European states, and giving the first ever quantitative assessment of the existing cross-country evidence, answering the question "what labor market program works for what target group under what (economic and institutional) circumstances?". Using an innovative meta-analytical approach, the authors find that rather than contextual factors such as labor market institutions or the business cycle, it is almost exclusively the program type that matters for program effectiveness: While direct employment programs in the public sector appear detrimental, wage subsidies and "Services and Sanctions" can be effective in increasing participants' employment probability.

The catalogue was published in connection with the exhibition The Danish Golden Age World-Class Art Between Disasters at The National at National Museum Stockholm (28th February - 21st July 2019) and the National Gallery of Denmark (24th August - 8th December 2019). The catalogue includes 20 articles by prominent Swedish and Danish art historians, who present the most recent academic research on one of the most popular eras in Danish art history. The research is supplemented with knowledge and insight gained in the editorial and curatorial process of both the book and the exhibition in Stockholm and Copenhagen. Thus, the book is introduced by a comprehensive overview article about the period by Karina Lykke Grand (University of Aarhus), which elaborates on the traditional, more idealised, narrative and the thematics that are typically presented in connection to the Danish Golden Age. Family life, citizenship, the Danish Art Academy, etc. are elaborated and challenged by various new readings and perspectives. How far the Danish Golden Age stretches is discussed, as well as, more undiscussed topics in art history, such as the female artists of the Danish Golden Age, colonialism the results of the new technical art history, the democratic revolution, nationalism versus internationalism, technology, Scandinavianism and Danish artists in Sweden. In addition, the catalogue focuses on the many artists who have been written out of the approved canon, not for lack of quality, but for reasons of realpolitik or identity politics. The catalogue, as well as the exhibition, has a chronological-spacial set up so that we follow the technical development and geographic movement between 1800 and 1860. This development can of course not be considered isolated, like art history has been inclined to do, but must be understood as closely interwoven with a wide range of societal conditions and changes. The catalogue is richly illustrated with approximately 350 paintings and photographies
