Adventures in Archaeology

P.J. Capelotti

University Press of Florida

Discover a little-known world of archaeology Wrecked aircraft and abandoned airfields, old highway billboards and derelict boats, movie props, deserted mining operations. In this book, archaeologist P.J. Capelotti explores places and things that people don’t typically think of as archaeological sites and artifacts, introducing readers to the most extreme fieldwork taking place today.Capelotti shows that even seemingly ordinary objects from the recent past hold secrets about the cultural history of humans. He investigates the site where a stunt copy of the Orca, the fishing boat used in the movie Jaws, was stripped to pieces by fans—a revelation of the ways humans relate to popular culture. He takes readers to abandoned base camps near the North Pole that are now used as destinations for Arctic tourism. Retelling the story of Thor Heyerdahl’s research expedition across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa log raft, Capelotti shows how this episode of experimental archaeology revealed cultural connections between continents. And he doesn’t stop at the limits of the planet. He discusses debris floating through outer space and equipment left behind on the surface of the moon, highlighting current efforts to preserve artifacts that exist beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. These discarded materials, says Capelotti, help archaeologists piece together the sweeping story of human cultural expansion and exploitation. He explains how the unusual sites of shorelines, sea, air, and space represent the farthest reaches of human civilization. His enthusiasm will inspire readers to set out on their own to investigate the secret meanings of treasures hiding in plain sight.

The Migrant Farmer in the History of the Cape Colony, 1657–1842
Petrus Johannes Van der Merwe wrote three of the most significant books on the history of South Africa before he was 35 years old. His trilogy, of which The Migrant Farmer is the first volume, has become a classic that no student of Cape colonial history of the seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteenth century can ignore. Van der Merwe was unique among Afrikaner historians in that he focused not on the single event known as the Great Trek, but on the greater migration, nearly three hundred years long, of peoples of Dutch, French and German descent out from the victualling station at Cape Town after their arrival there in 1652. In the process he pioneered new directions in historical writing decades before they became fashionable among other South African historians. Van der Merwe was less interested in politics than in the social, cultural, economic and religious lives of his subjects. He asked questions about such daily concerns as work, food, property owning, private and public worship, leisure activities, fashions, the environment and about the farmers’ relations with their neighbors, both white and black. The Migrant Farmer (Die Trekboer in die Geskiedenis van die Kaapkolonie, 1657-1842) was published in Cape Town in Afrikaans in 1938. Beck’s English translation will allow scholars worldwide the opportunity to use, or challenge, this pioneering study of South Africa.
Essential Clinical Pharmacology

Essential Clinical Pharmacology

P.J. Lewis

Kluwer Academic Publishers
1982

This book is about drugs and how they are used in the treat ment of disease. The development of effective drugs is one of the wonders of our century. It is difficult to believe that so few of the medicines we now use routinely were available when our grandparents were children. The last 50 years has seen an astonishing burst of dis coveries - antibiotics, antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, psycho tropics, anticonvulsants, steroids and many others. Of course this pace of advance has brought problems. Modern drugs are more powerful than the remedies they replaced, so it takes more skill and knowledge to use them correctly. Therapeutics has had to become more disciplined and now relies heavily on clinical pharma cology, which is the science of drugs in man. The tradition of this series of books has been to answer the questions an intelligent person would ask about a particular subject. Conventional texts on pharmacology can seem rather dull catalogues of drugs. Of course it is important to identify a drug, but it seems of greater importance to know how drugs work, how they are chosen for particular patients, what problems they produce and why. In this book the Socratic question and answer format has been deliberately chosen to bring out this sort of information.
Handbook of Hospital Medicine

Handbook of Hospital Medicine

P.J. Mitchell; P. Platt; C. Wren

The Handbook of Hospital Medicine was originally conceived by Dr Mitchell as a guide for junior medical staff working in his own unit. Its aim was to provide a practical pocket-sized guide on diagnosis, investigation, and general management of some of the more common medical problems. The success of the original book in Dr Mitchell's unit lead to its introduction in other units and hospitals and through the help of Johnson and Johnson to junior hospital doctors throughout South Africa. We (PNP and CW) have taken Dr Mitchell's original book and have attempted to modify it to the needs of medicine in Britian. The basic concept of the book remains the same, i.e. to provide a practical pocket reference guide for final year medical students through to registrars. Within the limits imposed by a pocket book it is obviously impossible to be comprehensive. We have attempted to cover common problems, but have also covered some less common cionditions we considered important, or where we felt rapid referrence was not readily available. The views presented represent an up-to date consensus of thinking, which we have had to present in a rather dogmatic form due to the constraints of space. We have given details of drug doses in the book but have assumed that the British National Formulary will be readily available for reference on drug side-effects and interactions. We would like to acknowledge the help and advice of many colleagues in the Newcastle area hospitals.
'A Free though Conquering People'
The present collection brings together a series of studies by Peter Marshall on British imperial expansion in the later 18th century. Some essays focus on the thirteen North American colonies, the West Indies, and British contact with China; those dealing specifically with India have appeared in the author's 'Trade and Conquest: Studies on the rise of British domination in India'. The majority, culminating in the four addresses on 'Britain and the World in the Eighteenth Century' delivered as President of the Royal Historical Society, deal with the processes and dynamics of empire-building and aim to bring together the history of Asia and the Atlantic. The themes investigated include the pressures that induced Britain to pursue new imperial strategies from the mid-18th century, Britain's contrasting fortunes in India and North America, and the way in which the British adjusted their conceptions of empire from one based on freedom and the domination of the seas, to one which involved the exercise of autocratic rule over millions of people and great expanses of territory.
Corrugated Horns for Microwave Antennas

Corrugated Horns for Microwave Antennas

P.J.B. Clarricoats; A.D. Olver

Institution of Engineering and Technology
1984
sidottu
Over the last twenty years Corrugated horns have become widely used as feeds for microwave reflector antennas because of their high efficiency, good pattern symmetry and low cross-polarisation. They are increasingly used in antennas for satellite communications, radar, microwave point to point communications and radio astronomy. The authors draw on more than fifteen years experience to write the first book to appear devoted to the theory and design of corrugated horns and scalar feeds. The book explains why hybrid mode feeds are ideal feeds for reflectors. The propagation and radiation behaviour of cylindrical corrugated waveguides, narrow flare angle conical corrugated horns and wide flare angle corrugated horns are described. Factors relevant to the practical design of corrugated horns are discussed. Other topics treated include the measurement of corrugated horns.
Radio Direction Finding and Superresolution

Radio Direction Finding and Superresolution

P.J.D. Gething

Institution of Engineering and Technology
1991
sidottu
This is an enlarged and revised second edition of a book first published in 1978 and reprinted twice since then. The new edition includes updates to all the original chapters, plus two new chapters on developments in superresolution techniques and their application to direction-finding arrays. Modern direction finders, capable of measuring elevation angles as well as azimuth angles on the components of multi-ray wavefields, have become powerful tools for research in ionospheric physics and HF radio propagation. The complexity of the problem of resolving closely-spaced rays requires the combined use of wide aperture antenna arrays, multichannel receiving systems and sophisticated digital processing techniques. Published research papers over the last 12 years provide a rich source of information on the development of superresolution algorithms for use in radar, sonar, geophysics and spectral analysis, as well as radio direction finding. Dr Gething reviews the important methods and results, showing how some of the new techniques are related to the wavefront analysis methods described in the first edition. The text is illustrated with computer plots of model wavefields and contain important results on the loci of constant phase and amplitude, and on the statistical properties of bearing-error distributions for specified models. The collection and interpretation of ionospheric data for the purpose of mode identification, and the statistical theory of DF plotting algorithms, are also discussed. Wavefront analysis and superresolution may be regarded as extensions to classical array theory. The basic principles are widely applicable and should therefore be of interest to research workers in radar, sonar, radioastronomy and adaptive array theory, as well as HF radio direction finding.
