Ce fut notre premier pas vers plus ample connaissance. En retour j'avais sa confiance sans r serves, et les aveux comme les inqui tudes d'un jeune homme sont presque aussi sacr s que ceux d'une vierge. Charlie n' tait jamais tomb amoureux, mais attendait avec anxi t la premi re occasion de le faire; il croyait en tout ce qui est bon, tout ce qui est honorable, mais, en m me temps, tenait singuli rement me laisser voir qu'il savait se tirer d'affaire dans la vie en bon commis de banque vingt-cinq shillings par semaine. Il faisait rimer amours, toujours; lune, brune, pieusement convaincu qu'on ne les avait jamais fait rimer auparavant.
