Winner of the 2002 Newbery Medal In this Newbery Medal-winning book set in 12th century Korea, Tree-ear, a 13-year-old orphan, lives under a bridge in Ch'ulp'o, a potters' village famed for delicate celadon ware. He has become fascinated with the potter's craft; he wants nothing more than to watch master potter Min at work, and he dreams of making a pot of his own someday. When Min takes Tree-ear on as his helper, Tree-ear is elated -- until he finds obstacles in his path: the backbreaking labor of digging and hauling clay, Min's irascible temper, and his own ignorance. But Tree-ear is determined to prove himself -- even if it means taking a long, solitary journey on foot to present Min's work in the hope of a royal commission . . . even if it means arriving at the royal court with nothing to show but a single celadon shard.
What the F: Shared Life Tips and Experiences
What the F is a book that has been my goal for some time This title came to me after watching a news story about a critically ill father who had written a book for his daughters. I thought to myself, what an excellent idea Since tomorrow is not guaranteed. I pondered about better experiences that I wanted while growing into and through adulthood I would have preferred to have known before teaching them the hard way. Although trials and tribulations help you to grow as a person and to mature; there are some things I'd prefer my daughters not to go through as they learn about life. As I started to brainstorm life topics: first...finances, second...friendships and then faith, I realized a pattern, the letter F. It's constant and boldness of the content, was the notion I needed for the title. Within one year, I wrote without ceasing. Finally, at age 42, What the F was born Understanding that some aspects of the book might bring feelings of depression (because life is not always easy), I collaborated with other women as I wrote. These women were diverse in various ways to obtain honest views and lessons from many aspects of their lives. This text shares stories of trials and triumphs, surrender and fight, hope and despair but coming out wiser along the way. I hope readers can relate to my experiences and at the same time learn something about themselves. So, with that...What the F, let's start reading

A Journey Shared

Every person walks a path on a journey and in the pages of this book is chronicled a sharing of one man's journey. Captured in story and verse written in a lucid styling are the sentiments born of a life's difficult beginning, subsequent triumphs, sorrows and innermost sentiments. Each writing is unique to its purpose of capturing a moment and bringing coherency to the unintelligible. This compilation, assembled after many requests for such a collection, has been put together as a sharing of experiences and sentiments. It is in the spirit of this sharing that this book is structured with each writing on a facing page and an accompanying prose on the reverse page. This format gives the reader an opportunity to ask that ever common question of the author, "what was going on for you when you wrote that?" It is with the creation of this book that the author sends his message, no one need be alone as they walk their journey.
Management of Shared Groundwater Resources
Most of the world's freshwater resources in the liquid state (i.e. not in glaciers and polar caps) are underground. As the population grows and demand for water rises, reliance on groundwater increases. In many cases the groundwater underlies boundaries, or is part of a hydraulic system that crosses boundaries. In such cases there is always the danger that the 'prisoner's dilemma' will run its course and all parties will compete over who will pump the most water, ultimately destroying the storage potential to the detriment of future generations of all parties reliant on the groundwater. This book explores the options and means for averting this all too realistic scenario by managing these shared groundwater resources. Nowhere is the likelihood of excessive use of groundwater greater than in the water-scarce Middle East, and especially in the Israeli-Palestinian case. Here both sides are heavily reliant on a shared aquifer, the Mountain aquifer. This book is the outcome of a seven-year effort to find ways to manage the Mountain aquifer, perhaps the most important resource shared by Israelis and Palestinians. As part of this cooperative study, four workshops were held in which a selected number of Palestinian, Israeli, and foreign experts were invited. The chapters in this book were originally presented in one of these workshops. To these papers introductory and concluding chapters were added.
Time and the Shared World

Time and the Shared World

Time and the Shared World challenges the common view that Heidegger offers few resources for understanding humanity’s social nature. The book demonstrates that Heidegger’s reformulation of traditional notions of subjectivity has wide-ranging implications for understanding the nature of human relationships. Contrary to entrenched critiques, Irene McMullin shows that Heidegger’s characterisation of selfhood as fundamentally social presupposes the responsive acknowledgment of each person’s particularity and otherness. In doing so, McMullin argues that Heidegger’s work on the social nature of the self must be located within a philosophical continuum that builds on Kant and Husserl’s work regarding the nature of the a priori and the fundamental structures of human temporality, while also pointing forward to developments of these themes to be found in Heidegger’s later work and in such thinkers as Sartre and Levinas. By developing unrecognised resources in Heidegger’s work, Time and the Shared World is able to provide a Heidegger-inspired account of respect and the intersubjective origins of normativity.
