The construction of any broadly understood theory of information or infor­ mation processing system involves two major methodological processes: (1) abstraction and analysis, (2) reasoning and computing. This monograph is a realisation of these two processes in relation to the study of incompleteness of information. The paradigm we are working with is inspired by a rough-set approach to data analysis: the formalisms we develop enable the use of a non­ invasive data representation. This means that the only information which is and must be used in the process of analysis is the actual information that is to be analysed; we do not require any additional sources of information. An abstraction is formed in the process of conception, design, and develop­ ment of structures. Then analysis leads to a selection of a class of structures. In this book we delineate a class of informational structures that enable us to represent both numerical and non-numerical information and we analyse var­ ious manifestations of its incompleteness. We discuss several general types of incompleteness of information which are grounded in a rough-set-style view of imprecision and uncertainty. Manifestations of these types of incompleteness in information systems are investigated.

Production Management is a large field concerned with all the aspects related to production, from the very bottom decisions at the machine level, to the top-level strategic decisicns. In this book, we are concerned with production planning and scheduling aspects. Traditional production planning methodologies are based on a now widely ac­ cepted hierarchical decom?osition into several planning decision levels. The higher in the hierarchy, the more aggregate are the models and the more important are the decisions. In this book, we only consider the last two decision levels in the hierarchy, namely, the mid-term (or tacticaQ planning level and the short-term (or operationaQ scheduling level. In the literature and in practice, the decisions are taken in sequence and in a top-down approach from the highest level in the hierarchy to the bottom level. The decisions taken at some level in the hierarchy are constrained by those already taken at upper levels and in turn, must translate into feasible objectives for the next lower levels in the hierarchy. It is a common sense remark to say that the whole hierarchical decision process is coherent if the interactions between different levels in the hierarchy are taken into account so that a decision taken at some level in the hierarchy translates into a feasible objective for the next decision level in the hierarchy. However, and surpris­ ingly enough, this crucial consistency issue is rarely investigated and few results are available in the literature.

Ausschlaggebend für die aktuellen Debatten und Reformvorschläge rund um das Ausbildungssystem, sind der Abbau von Ausbildungskapazitäten seit Beginn der 90er Jahre sowie die Tatsache, dass das Berufsbildungsgesetz ohne grundlegende Änderungen seit 1969 besteht. Obwohl der Staat interveniert um das duale System zu stabilisieren, gelingt es nicht die gravierenden Probleme zu lösen, vor denen das deutsche Ausbildungssystem steht. Dabei befinden sich die angesprochenen Probleme nicht in einer bestimmten Sektion, sondern scheinen ein Netz aus kritischen Aspekten zu bilden, welches das duale System umschließt. Insofern verwundert es nicht, dass immer wieder die Frage nach der Tragbarkeit des deutschen Ausbildungssystems an sich gestellt wird. Diese Hausarbeit soll die Problematik, in der sich das duale System der Berufsausbildung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland momentan befindet, erläutern. Dabei werden zunächst die Krisensymptome, Ursachen und Krisenauswirkungen beschrieben. Die Arbeit bezieht sich bei dieser Beschreibung vor allem auf die Untersuchung zur Modernisierung des dualen Systems durch Prof. Dr. Dieter Euler, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, welche 1998 durch die Bund-Länder-Kommission für Bildungsplanung und Forschungsförderung veröffentlicht wurde, sowie auf das am 8. Oktober 2003 - auf dem BBiG-Fachkongress des DGB, Berlin - gehaltene Referat von Wolf-Dietrich Greinert, der das deutsche System der Berufsausbildung kritisch hinterfragt. Zuletzt sollen die aktuellen Reaktionen und Reformvorschläge - und damit vor allem die aktuelle Reform des Berufsbildungsgesetzes - vorgestellt werden.
