In this tense, spellbinding thriller set over the course of a single day, a woman prepares for a party that goes dreadfully wrong--for fans of Ashley Audrain and Lisa Jewell. Nadine Walsh's summer garden party is in full swing. The neighbors all have cocktails, the catered food is exquisite--everything's going according to plan. But Nadine--devoted wife, loving mother, and doting daughter--finds herself standing over a dead body in her basement while her guests clink glasses upstairs. What happened? How did it come to this? Rewind to that morning, when Nadine is in her kitchen, making last-minute preparations before she welcomes more than a hundred guests to her home to celebrate her mother's birthday. But her husband is of little help to her, her two grown children are consumed with their own concerns, and her mother--only her mother knows that today isn't just a birthday party. It marks another anniversary as well. Still, Nadine will focus just on tonight. Everyone deserves a celebration after the year they've had. A chance for fun. A chance to forget. But it's hard to forget when Nadine's head is swirling with secrets, haunting memories, and concerns about what might happen when her guests unite.
The Unknown Universe: A New Exploration of Time, Space, and Modern Cosmology
On March 21, 2013, the European Space Agency released a map of the afterglow of the Big Bang. Taking in 440 sextillion kilometres of space and 13.8 billion years of time, it is physically impossible to make a better map: we will never see the early universe in more detail. On the one hand, such a view is the apotheosis of modern cosmology, on the other, it threatens to undermine almost everything we hold cosmologically sacrosanct. The map contains anomalies that challenge our understanding of the universe. It will force us to revisit what is known and what is unknown, to construct a new model of our universe. This is the first book to address what will be an epoch-defining scientific paradigm shift. Stuart Clark will ask if Newton's famous laws of gravity need to be rewritten; if dark matter and dark energy are just celestial phantoms? Can we ever know what happened before the Big Bang? What's at the bottom of a black hole? Are there universes beyond our own? Does time exist? Are the once immutable laws of physics changing?

This book makes no pretense of giving to the world a new theory of the intellectual operations. Its claim to attention, if it possess any, is grounded on the fact that it is an attempt, not to supersede, but to embody and systematize, the best ideas which have been either promulgated on its subject by speculative writers, or conformed to by accurate thinkers in their scientific inquiries.

George Stuart Fullerton (1859-1925) was an American philosopher and psychologist. Fullerton was born at Fatehgarh, India, the son of the Rev. Robert Stuart Fullerton. He came to this country as a youth. He graduated in 1879 from the University of Pennsylvania and in 1884 from Yale Divinity School; and returned to Pennsylvania to be an instructor, adjunct professor, and dean of the department of philosophy, dean of the college, and vice provost of the university. In 1904 he was appointed professor of philosophy at Columbia University, and served as head of the department. He was the host of the first annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in 1892 at the University of Pennsylvania, and the APA's fifth president, in 1896. In 1884 he married Miss Rebekah Daingerfield Smith of Alexandria, Va., who died in 1892. Five years later he married Julia Winslow Dickerson of Philadelphia, his widow. There were no children. In 1914, while he was exchange professor at the University of Vienna, World War I broke out. He was Lecturing at Munich (Germany) when Interned. Fullerton was imprisoned as a civilian enemy national. He remained imprisoned for four years, until the end of the war, and conditions were so harsh that he returned to the U.S. with his health permanently damaged. (Scottish psychologist Henry J. Watt suffered a similar fate.) Nearly an invalid for the last decade of his life, Fullerton committed suicide at the age of 66.

Like any young boy born in the latter years of the Victorian age Albert Young dreamed of adventure and travelling but they were all dashed when an assassins bullet was fired in Sarajevo in 1914 and a world war began.Eager to do his bit for King and Country he joined up but soon learnt the harsh reality of life in the trenches and for the next few years somehow survived where so many of his friends did not. Because of his talent with a Lee Enfield .303 rifle he was seconded to a special unit and was soon in demand as a sniper. He became so proficient that the Germans called him 'Die Viper' but eventually it took its toll and when his last victim was a young boy not old enough to have started shaving or to have known the joy of laying with a woman he asked for a transfer.Due to the compassion of his commanding office Captain Wilkinson he was first sent to a sanatorium and then spent the last few months of the war in a clerical position.Finding work afterwards was not easy but a letter out of the blue brought him back into contact with Wilkinson who had been tasked in setting up a department to deal with terrorism on the British mainland.Young is thrown into the middle of a war with Irish nationalists who are seeking to kill as many of the Cabinet as possible as well as destroying over a square mile of London with explosives that would have dwarfed Guy Fawkes' attempt.

Further Confessions of a Small Press Racketeer is a continuation of the columns and essays that comprised Stuart's 2005 release, Confessions of a Small Press Racketeer. Again, equal parts literary memoir, reckless tirade, and unsolicited advice for the aspiring writer, Further Confessions is drawn largely from Stuart Ross's notorious "Hunkamooga" column, his blog entries, essays for subTerrain magazine and other online venues. We bring them together here in their collected brilliance: alternately snarky, sincere, touching, honest, and always opinionated, Stuart's "confessions" are essential reading for any literary confessional. This volume offers its readers a roller-coaster journey into the mind of one of Canada's most committed small press activists. Praise for Confessions of a Small Press Racketeer, vol. 1: "Confessions of a Small Press Racketeer is a wonderful book-funny, outrageous, and acute. I'll even say it's the best short-essay collection about the writing life I've read in ages." (Lynne Van Luven, Malahat Review) "For a quick and dirty breath of fresh air, it's difficult to beat renegade urban poet Stuart Ross's latest effort, Confessions of a Small Press Racketeer ... No reformed baby boomer or slumming trust-funder, Ross has the battle scars and knows poetry isn't about flowers and meadows, it's about blood and guts." (Stephen Knight, Quill & Quire) "The book is a must for anyone working as a poet in Canada, with standout pieces on the politics ofwriting for free, open mic readings, poetic bitterness, chapbook and zine publishing, and the requisite but never-funnier grouch advice to young poets, salubriously titled Stop Bugging Me Already!'" (Prairie Fire) "...no pulled punches here ... this is writing that works because, as with all good confessions, it's from the heart but comes by way of the brain." (Vancouver Review)

Five Trophies and a Funeral: The Building and Rebuilding of Durham County Cricket Club is the story of how English cricket's youngest first-class county quickly became the country's top team, before overstretching themselves financially to the brink of extinction. When Durham joined the professional game in 1992 they aspired to be a major on-field force and a home to top international cricket. The high demands put on them as a condition of entry, together with their own lofty ambitions, pushed the club to five major trophies in seven seasons while providing England with top-quality players reared in the North East. But striving for ever more at a time of economic downturn led them to live beyond their means, and they were heavily punished for overspending that the authorities partly encouraged. Now they are looking to restore past glories under the chairmanship of Sir Ian Botham. Part fairy tale, part cautionary story, Five Trophies explains how Durham arrived where they are, and where they aim to go next.

Communication Does God Have a Problem? and Does It Matter?

Communication Does God Have a Problem? and Does It Matter?

Stuart John Cornell

There are many different understandings of God. This is evidenced by the multiplicity of faith groups and the variety within them. Has this situation come about because God has a communication problem ? Many of these groups claim that their own particular view is the only True and authentic understanding and thus everyone else is wrong. They behave and speak accordingly. This has, and still does, cause a range of harms. From personal guilt and shame to physical harm, torture and war. By demonstrating the evolutionary nature of knowledge, using science, philosophy and cosmology as exemplars, I suggest that similar processes also apply to understandings of God, faith and the scriptures. Using Evolution as a paradigm for change suggests that the different understandings of God are an inevitable consequence of the way God has set things up, not because of a breakdown in communication. Thus, we should embrace difference. Acceptance of this analysis leads to a radically different attitude. It means that no one faith can claim a monopoly on "The Truth" and we should accept the legitimacy of other understandings whilst acting and worshiping together as though there are none. Such a change in attitude is needed for everyones' sake and the future of the world.

Upgrading & Fixing a PC in easy steps provides all the information one needs to do just that. A must for all PC users. Upgrading & Fixing a PC in easy steps enables you to keep your PC at the cutting-edge by explaining how to replace components or add new ones. When one considers the high price and inconvenience of computer store visits, it's no wonder that we think of this both a learning tool and an investment.
A Descriptive History of the Steam Engine

A Descriptive History of the Steam Engine

First published in 1824, this book charts the history of the steam engine from its roots in ancient Greece to the sophistication it had achieved by the early nineteenth century. Written at the height of the Industrial Revolution, when the use of steam power was dramatically transforming the nature of industry, this was the first comprehensive study of the subject. Beginning with the first recorded use of steam power by the Greek mechanic Hero, it covers inventions by Savery, Papin and Newcomen, up to the ‘grand improvements’ made by Watt during the eighteenth century, by which point steam engines were powering all manner of factory machinery. This is a fascinating account, underpinned by sound engineering knowledge and illustrated with numerous diagrams, and it conveys the wonder that went hand-in-hand with living at a time when such inventions were revealing the true potential of science and technology.
