Tudor and Stuart Britain charts the political, religious, economic and social history of Britain from the start of Henry VII’s reign in 1485 to the death of Queen Anne in 1714, providing students and lecturers with a detailed chronological narrative of significant events, such as the Reformation, the nature of Tudor government, the English Civil War, the Interregnum and the restoration of the monarchy. This fourth edition has been fully updated and each chapter now begins with an introductory overview of the topic being discussed, in which important and current historical debates are highlighted. Other new features of the book include a closer examination of the image and style of leadership that different monarchs projected during their reigns; greater coverage of Phillip II and Mary I as joint monarchs; new sections exploring witchcraft during the period and the urban sector in the Stuart age; and increased discussion of the English Civil War, of Oliver Cromwell and of Cromwellian rule during the 1650s.Also containing an entirely rewritten guide to further reading and enhanced by a wide selection of maps and illustrations, Tudor and Stuart Britain is an excellent resource for both students and teachers of this period.

Collected Works of John Stuart Mill
This volume contains about 375 letters by John Stuart Mill since the publication of Earlier Letters in 1962 and Later Letters in 1972. Though it covers a vast range of topics, the collection has three specially interesting groups: a series of letters to Henry Cole, dealing amongst other things with the disposition of the London and Westminster Review; the full versions of letters to Theodor Gomperz, Mill's leading German disciple and translator, which had been thought destroyed; and recently found internal correspondence in the Examiners office of the East India company which sheds new light on Mill's career. The Editor's introduction, places the letters in context, gives details about the three special groups, and outlines the history of the collection. The letters are presented in full scholarly form, with notes giving information about the texts and their provenance, and also historical and biographical information. The specially valuable appendix consists of the first published check list of letters to Mill, with their location. Other appendices give variant readings from the Gomperz letters, a finding list of form letters signed by Mill in the India Office Library and Records, an index of correspondents represented in this volume, an index of persons and works cited in the letters, and an analytical index.

Collected Works of John Stuart Mill
Mill's interests and activities were so wide-ranging that even the varied subjects of thirty previously published volumes of Collected Works cannot encompass them all. This volume brings together diverse and interesting instances of his polymathic career, none before republished and some previously unpublished. Neatly framing Mill's writing career are his editorial prefaces and extensive notes to Bentham's Rationale of Judicial Evidence (1827) and James Mill's Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind (1869). Both demonstrate his extraordinary powers of mind and diligence. His abiding passion, field botany, is shown in his botanical writings, which open a window on an almost unknown activity that sustained and delighted him. Brief comments on two medical works hint at another interest. Two co-authored articles demonstrate his work as editor of the London and Westminster Review, and a calendar of his contributions to the Political Economy Club provides yet another glimpse into his chosen activities and concerns. Published for the first time are Mill's English and French wills, providing still further biographical detail.
