The Block Parent® Program of Canada was launched in 1968 following a tragic child abduction and homicide in Ontario. It rapidly expanded across the country, becoming the largest volunteer-led child safety initiative. For over fifty years, the program relied on volunteer homemakers, mostly stay-at-home mothers, who signaled their homes as safe havens for distressed children. Supported by partnerships with police, local businesses, and schools, the program provided a community-based approach to child protection. Although participation declined over the years, recent concerns about bullying, traffic safety, and child protection have sparked renewed interest in Block Parent communities. Guardians of the Community examines the social, political, technological, and cultural conditions that shifted along with the program to understand the landscape of child protection and community crime prevention over the last five decades. The book draws upon open-ended interviews with key figures who were instrumental in launching and leading the Block Parent Program, analyses of annual reports and documents from the program, and public sources including newspapers, social media, and Hansard debates to explore public and political perceptions of the program and related safety concerns. In exploring the motivations underlying involvement in child safety programs, Guardians of the Community reveals the connections between community engagement and cohesion, civic responsibility, and concerns around child protection.

Computational Advertising (CA), popularly known as online advertising or Web advertising, refers to finding the most relevant ads matching a particular context on the Web. The context depends on the type of advertising and could mean the content where the ad is shown, the user who is viewing the ad, or the social network of the user. CA is a scientific sub-discipline at the intersection of information retrieval, statistical modeling, machine learning, optimization, large scale search, and text analysis.The core problem addressed in CA is of match-making between the ads and the context. Research in CA has evolved considerably over the last decade and a half and currently continues both in traditional areas such as vocabulary mismatch, query rewriting, and click prediction, and recently identified areas like user targeting, mobile advertising, and social advertising.Computational Advertising focuses predominantly on the problems and solutions proposed in traditional areas while also looking briefly at the emerging areas in the latter half of the monograph. To facilitate future research, a discussion of available resources, a list of public benchmark datasets and a discussion on future research directions are provided in the concluding sections.

Ruling Bodies centers around an epochal ontological shift in ideas that changed the nature and the meaning of coercion in modern political thought. It begins with a review of Foucault, Arendt, and Habermas, and points out a discrepancy in the way each thinker understood coercion in modern politics. From here, Varma dives into the works of Plato to provide a framework and context for thinking about this. Through a detailed examination of the Republic, the Laws, and the Gorgias, Ruling Bodies offers us the first comprehensive account of coercion in Plato's thought. As the author shows, each dialogue is a demonstration of a particular style of Platonic statecraft that corresponds to the amount of power the philosopher holds in a city. The Republic demonstrates how a philosopher would rule as a monarch; the Laws demonstrates his rule when he must share power with other spirited oligarchs; and the Gorgias demonstrates his rule in a democracy where power belongs to the people. In all three dialogues, Varma argues that the philosopher's logos sought to bridge the passions of man with the heavenly bodies, and coercion was merely a supplementary tool to help achieve this end. When Hobbes recast the cosmos as matter, form, and power, however, the soul gets reduced to a material body, and the aim of logos was not to bridge the passions of man with the heavens, but to make the body obedient to power.
