In 'Meisjes van de plantage' (een vervolg op 'Slow Dancing - oog om oog') bezoeken Max en Laura bijna wekelijks de in een verpleeghuis verblijvende Mara, de oudere zus van Flora, Max' moeder. Tijdens die bezoekjes vertelt Mara over haar leven in Nederlands-Indi , waar haar vader administrateur was op een grote tabaksplantage op Oost-Java. Daar waar Flora door haar schoonheid omringd werd door aanbidders, kon de lichamelijk gehandicapte Mara slechts toekijken hoe haar zusje genoot van al de aandacht. Gaandeweg de gesprekken merken Max en Laura dat er de nodige familiegeheimen zijn, die na het overlijden van zijn moeder alleen nog door zijn tante kunnen worden onthuld. Uit haar reacties maken ze op dat veel van die gebeurtenissen plaatsvonden in haar ouderlijk huis in Soerabaja.
