Van Gogh’s famous painting was created from memory during his extended term at the Asylum in Saint-Rémy, towards the end of his life, in 1889. Unlike many of his masterpieces, very little is known about the motivations for this piece because it is barely mentioned in the correspondence with his brother Theo. The surviving letters from this period discuss, and include preliminary sketches of, so many of his other works, but there remains an air of mystery about its absence, perhaps contributing to the success of the work in more recent times. The Starry Night does capture the essence of Van Gogh’s style, with its strong, textured strokes, sweeping lines of movement, and the exaggerated detail, all of which point to the anxious turmoil of the artist’s incarceration. The dark towering cypress tree to the left of the painting overpowers the quiet settlement below, but is itself dominated by the glowing orbs in the sky. The Starry Night retains the impression of the world around us, but hints at the emotions beyond and behind. SUSTAINABLY SOURCED. This puzzle is free of plastic packaging and created using FSC-certified paper and board. Flame Tree actively strives to promote ethical development and environmental conservation.
Adult Jigsaw Puzzle Vincent Van Gogh: Wheat Field with a Lark

This new jigsaw will satisfy your need for a challenge, with a popular masterpiece of post impressionism, Wheat Field with a Lark by Van Gogh. Now includes an A4 poster for reference. In Wheat Field With a Lark Vincent Van Gogh abandoned his earlier darker palette, replacing it with light colours and directional brushstrokes to depict the airiness of a wheat field swaying in a summer’s breeze. In the last years of his life, he painted several landscapes featuring wheat fields, all of which evoke a range of emotions. In a letter to his brother he explained his inspiration: ‘I am almost certain that these canvases illustrate what I cannot express in words, that is, how healthy and reassuring I find the countryside.’ His love for the countryside can be seen in the quick and lyrical execution of each stroke that makes every flower and wheat sheaf come alive. While he was not widely accepted in his lifetime, Van Gogh is now one of the most renowned artists in the world and his incredible paintings will be for ever admired.

He had previously been greatly inspired by flowering trees, and appreciated their power as symbols of rebirth. One of America's best-loved poets, Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) burst onto the literary scene at a very young age and won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923. Her passionate lyrics and superbly crafted sonnets have thrilled generations of readers long after the notoriously bohemian lifestyle she led in Greenwich Village in the 1920s ceased to shock them. Millay's refreshing frankness and cynicism and her ardent appetite for life still burn brightly on the page more than half a century after her death.

The life of Vincent de Paul, the great apostle of charity, is one of the most inspiring of all the Christian saints and his legacy is visible today through the internationally recognised charity that bears his name. In The World of Monsieur Vincent, Mary Purcell gives readers a fascinating portrait of the saint who saw 'Christ agonising in every human being who suffered, and who spent a lifetime in trying to assuage that agony'. Both the grandeur and the misery of life in seventeenth century France is vividly recaptured by the author as she traces Vincent de Paul’s long life (1580-1660). Here again we meet the young peasant, the priest, the captive slave, the religious reformer, and the founder of two great religious orders - the Vincentians and the Daughters of Charity - whose work continues today. The wealth of historical detail included in The World of Monsieur Vincent, first published in 1966, makes it a particularly valuable study of both a renowned saint’s life and the turbulent times in which he lived. With a new introduction by Pascal Scallon CM, the Provincial Superior of the Irish Province of the Vincentians and the National Spiritual Director of the SVP.
