Dear Journal, Besides my school's Christmas Ball being tonight, the video shoot for "Walk Like An Egyptian" is going to be taking place this morning. The video shoot hasn't even begun yet, and I can already tell that it is going to be my favorite video to make. I personally think it is because my best friends, good friends, and boyfriend are going to be in it. With this said, I am truly looking forward to filming it.On a different note, I am also looking forward to tonight's Christmas Ball. Noah will be escorting me to it. I am so excited that I can hardly wait Love and God Bless, Natal

In the days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, eyes in America were focused on the war in Europe or distracted by the elevated mood sweeping the country in the final days of the Great Depression. But when planes dropped out of a clear blue sky and bombed the American naval base and aerial targets in Hawaii, all of that changed. December 1941 takes readers into the moment-by-moment ordeal of a nation waking to war.Best-selling author Craig Shirley celebrates the American spirit while reconstructing the events that called it to shine with rare and piercing light. By turns nostalgic and critical, he puts readers on the ground in the stir and the thick of the action. Relying on daily news reports from around the country and recently declassified government papers, Shirley sheds light on the crucial diplomatic exchanges leading up to the attack, the policies on internment of Japanese living in the U.S. after the assault, and the near-total overhaul of the U.S. economy for war.Shirley paints a compelling portrait of pre-war American culture: the fashion, the celebrities, the pastimes. And his portrait of America at war is just as vivid: heroism, self-sacrifice, mass military enlistments, national unity and resolve, and the prodigious talents of Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley aimed at the Axis Powers, as well as the more troubling price-controls and rationing, federal economic takeover, and censorship. Featuring colorful personalities such as Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull, and General Douglas MacArthur, December 1941 highlights a period of profound change in American government, foreign and domestic policy, law, economics, and business, chronicling the developments day by day through that singular and momentous month.December 1941 features surprising revelations, amusing anecdotes, and heart-wrenching stories, and also explores the unique religious and spiritual dimension of a culture under assault on the eve of Christmas. Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the closest thing to war for the Americans was uncoordinated, mediocre war games in South Carolina. Less than thirty days later, by the end of December 1941, the nation was involved in a pitched battle for the preservation of its very way of life, a battle that would forever change the nation and the world.

Ten hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, "another Pearl Harbor" of even more devastating consequence for American arms occurred in the Philippines, 4,500 miles to the west. On December 8, 1941, at 12.35 p.m., 196 Japanese Navy bombers and fighters crippled the largest force of B-17 four-engine bombers outside the United States and also decimatedtheir protective P-40 interceptors. The sudden blow allowed the Japanese to rule the skies over the Philippines, removing the only effective barrier that stood between them and their conquest of Southeast Asia. This event has been called "one of the blackest days in American military history." How could the army commander in the Philippines--the renowned Lt. Gen. Douglas MacArthur--have been caught with all his planes on the ground when he had been alerted in the small hours of that morning of the Pearl Harbor attack and warned of the likelihood of a Japanese strike on his forces? In this book, author William H. Bartsch attempts to answer this and other related questions. Bartsch draws upon twenty-five years of research into American and Japanese records and interviews with many of the participants themselves, particularly survivors of the actual attack on Clark and Iba air bases. The dramatic and detailed coverage of the attack is preceded by an account of the hurried American build-up of air power in the Philippines after July, 1941, and of Japanese planning and preparations for this opening assault of its Southern Operations. Bartsch juxtaposes the experiences of staff of the U.S. War Department in Washington and its Far East Air Force bomber, fighter, and radar personnel in the Philippines, who were affected by its decisions, with those of Japan's Imperial General Headquarters in Tokyo and the 11th Air Fleet staff and pilots on Formosa, who were assigned the responsibility for carrying out the attack on the Philippines five hundred miles to the south. In order to put the December 8th attack in broader context, Bartsch details micro-level personal experiences and presents the political and strategic aspects of American and Japanese planning for a war in the Pacific. Despite the significance of this subject matter, it has never before been given full book-length treatment. This book represents the culmination of decades-long efforts of the author to fill this historical gap.

LONGLISTED FOR THE QUEEN SOF A SPANISH INSTITUTE TRANSLATION PRIZEA masterful novel exploring womanhood, class, and tradition in 1950s ColombiaFrom her home in Paris, Lina recalls the story of three women whose lives unfold in the conservative city of Barranquilla in Colombia. Amid parties at the Country Club and strolls along the promenade in Puerto Colombia unfurls a story of sensuality suppressed by violence; a narrative of oppression in which Dora, Catalina, and Beatriz are victims of a patriarchy that is woven into the social fabric. In Lina's obsessive account of the past, this masterful novel transforms personal anecdotes into a profound panorama of Colombian society towards the end of the 1950s. From private memories to historical reality, the structure of this book is full of precision, poetry, and exile's insight.Standing above and apart from her contemporaries of the Latin American literary boom, Marvel Moreno narrates a reality that describes the private lives of the people of Barranquilla while offering a compelling perspective on the human condition."One of the hundred most influential women in the history of Colombia."--Cromos magazine

*DECEMBER*The Memoirs of an Opulent LadyThe END for many starts the BEGINNING of Her Opulence... She stares at the reflection of her disguise looking back at her and mentally picks apart the facade she so painstakingly crafted. Her strong broad shoulders begin to collapse under the layers of regrets, pain and tormented flesh. Like a movie reel she replays the imagery of broken promises, abuse and self-sabotage. As she strips away the Instagram filters; she reveals a body clothed in scars and grinds her brittle teeth at sight of her stress induced alopecia. The energy and strength of attending daily pity parties left little room for proper hygiene and self-care. Her body is covered with scars, her teeth are brittle from lack of proper dental hygiene care. Drunk with sorrow and weak from mental exhaustion; she drops to her knees and cries to the almighty God, Our Lord and Savior; "let your will be done Father.'' God rewarded her loyalty and obedience with an abundance of blessings that allowed her opulence to radiate. She felt compelled to share her testimony from the darkest core of her soul so that you may feel the vibration of her convictions. This is "The Memoirs of An Opulent Lady. After all...she never stopped RUNNING "

Throughout the 90's and 00's, Larry Morris of Hillside Church in Albuquerque, NM wrote a poem to commemorate the celebration of every Christmas. This book is the first attempt to group them all into a collection. In these works, Larry Morris punctures through the banalities of the holiday season (gift shopping, social obligations) and shows us what about Christmas contains the possibility of real transformation. We don't need to be mystics ourselves to be enriched by Larry's vision of Christmas and apply his insight to our lives during this holiday season, or any time.
