Information on the evolution, taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, physiology and genetics of grapevines has been scarce and thinly spread in the literature on horticulture and the plant sciences. This book aims to provide a concise but comprehensive overview of the biology and cultivation of the grapevine, accessible to all concerned with viticulture. After a description of the essential features of viticulture, including a concise history from antiquity to modern times, the taxonomy of the grapevine and the evolutionary processes which gave rise to the diversity within the Vitaceae is considered. Particular attention is paid to the genera Vitis and Muscadinia, which are considered a reserve of genetic variation for the improvement of grapevines. A description of the vegetative and reproductive anatomy of the grapevine precedes a full discussion of the developmental and environmental physiology of these fascinating and economically important plants. The concluding chapter considers the potential for genetic improvement of grapevines and includes coverage of the problems encountered, and the methods and strategies employed in breeding for scions and rootstocks.

Barbro Alvings allra sista kåserisamling, "Kunde vara värre", kom ut 1973. Samma år konstaterar hon i en tidningsartikel: "Det skrivs ibland i kåserirecensioner att Bang blivit allvarligare. Ja, det vore underligt annat." 1942 hade hon börjat skriva kåserier under signaturen Käringen mot strömmen. Redan då kunde hon vara allvarlig, men visst lyser en ilska över all dumhets envishet igenom tydligare i de senare böckerna. Det var i möten med människor av alla de slag som Bangs kåserier kom till. Hon har själv sagt: "I mitt yrke lär man sig se avigsidorna på denna världens stora och rätsidorna på denna värdens små." Och hennes vapen mot mänskliga svagheter och brister år som alltid den avväpnande humorn. Dessa kåserier är samlade av Birgit Petri, som även sammanställt den förra boken med kåserier, Käringen mot strömmen 1946-1958.
Till hundraårsminnet av Barbro Alvings födelse utges två böcker. Dels Bang om Bang, i vilken dottern Ruffa samlat och kommenterat texter, där Bang berättar öppenhjärtigt om sig själv i det privata och i yrket. Dels denna volym, som rymmer ett urval av Bangs bästa reportage, kåserier och betraktelser.Här finns hennes legendariska rapporter från Berlinolympiaden, skakande frontreportage från inbördeskrigets Spanien, finska vinterkriget och det ockuperade Norge. Reportagen från VM-matchen Ingo-Floyd och rättegången mot Adolf Eichmann är ännu ett par höjdpunkter i hennes journalistiska gärning.Genom åren skrev Barbro Alving under signaturen "Käringen mot strömmen" en stor mängd kåserier. Här finner vi ett urval med en något allvarligare underton. De var tänkta för en radioserie, som inte blev av. Barbro Alving drabbades 1982 av afasi.Boken avslutas med en avdelning omisskännliga betraktelser kring allehanda livsfrågor. Här finner vi bland annat "Tankar på en lantkyrkogård", "Att skriva nuets historia" samt radions sommarprogram från 1981.Inledning: Ruffa Alving.
