In 1719, the former secretary of State and famous English writer Joseph Addison passed away and was burried in Westminster Abbey among the great national poets. A few decades later, the great lexicographer Samuel Johnson defined Joseph Addison’s prose style as the quintessence of Englishness in his Lives of the English Poets. This selection of essays ambitions to celebrate the tercentenary of his death by showing that Addison was part of the European as much as the English Enlightenment. It explores how European countries and cultures played a decisive, if somewhat ambiguous role in his career and writing. It finally offers insights of Addison’s huge literary and journalistic legacy in Europe.

Joseph Addison: Tercentenary Essays is a collection of fifteen essays by a team of internationally recognized experts specially commissioned to commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of Addison's death in 2019. Almost exclusively known now as the inventor and main author of The Spectator, probably the most widely read and imitated prose work of the eighteenth century, Addison also produced important and influential work across a broad gamut of other literary modes--poems, verse translations, literary criticism, periodical journalism, drama, opera, travel writing. Much of this work is little known nowadays even in specialist academic circles; Addison is often described as the most neglected of the eighteenth century's major writers. This volume is the first collection to address the full range and variety of Addison's career and writings. Its fifteen chapters fall into three groupings: the first set study Addison's work in modes other than the literary periodical (poetry, translation, travel writing, drama); the second set address The Spectator from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (literary-critical, sociological and political, bibliographical); and the final set explore Addison's reception within several cultural spheres (philosophy, horticulture, art history), by individual writers or across larger historical periods (the Romantic age, the Victorian age), and in Britain and Europe, especially France. The volume provides an overdue and appropriately diverse memorial to one of the dominant men of letters of the Georgian era.

O'Grady presents Addison in several different lights: as a woman learning to assert herself in the hitherto male world of university governance; as an administrator dealing with questions of individual freedom and group standards at a time when the permissible limits of behaviour were expanding; as a former Methodist who learned to modify her beliefs while retaining her core Christianity; and as an advocate for more fulfiling lives for women who was forced to deal with questions of co-education, the possibility of gender-neutral studies, and the nature of womanliness. O'Grady clearly shows that Addison wanted to make a difference in the world and did so B her innovations, such as student government and lectures on careers and sex education, were widely copied in other universities. The name Joseph Addison was once synonymous with the finest of English prose. Eminent writers from Voltaire to Lord Macaulay to John Steinbeck considered him a consummate master to be studied and emulated. According to Benjamin Franklin, Addison’s writings "contributed more to the improvement of the minds of the British nation, and polishing their manner, than those of any other English pen whatever." While his influence lives on in the sound and style of English today, the fame of this literary role model has faded from popular awareness.
