Lydfilene lastes ned hos forlaget Arnebergs forlag

Maria Gaetana Agnesi, filosofa e matematica, e Giuseppe Parini, abate riluttante e poeta in declino.

The fascinating true story of mathematician Maria Agnesi. She is best known for her curve, the witch of Agnesi, which appears in almost all high school and undergraduate math books. She was a child prodigy who frequented the salon circuit, discussing mathematics, philosophy, history, and music in multiple languages. She wrote one of the first vernacular textbooks on calculus and was appointed chair of mathematics at the university in Bologna. In later years, however, she became a prominent figure within the Catholic Enlightenment, gave up academics, and devoted herself to the poor, the sick, the hungry, and the homeless. Indeed, the life of Maria Agnesi reveals a complex and enigmatic figure—one of the most fascinating characters in the history of mathematics. Using newly discovered archival documents, Massimo Mazzotti reconstructs the wide spectrum of Agnesi's social experience and examines her relationships to various traditions—religious, political, social, and mathematical. This meticulous study shows how she and her fellow Enlightenment Catholics modified tradition in an effort to reconcile aspects of modern philosophy and science with traditional morality and theology.Mazzotti's original and provocative investigation is also the first targeted study of the Catholic Enlightenment and its influence on modern science. He argues that Agnesi's life is the perfect lens through which we can gain a greater understanding of mid-eighteenth-century cultural trends in continental Europe.

At a time when women were generally excluded from scholarly discourse in the intellectual centers of Europe, four extraordinary female letterate proved their parity as they lectured in prominent scientific and literary academies and published in respected journals. During the Italian Enlightenment, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Giuseppa Eleonora Barbapiccola, Diamante Medaglia Faini, and Aretafila Savini de Rossi were afforded unprecedented deference in academic debates and epitomized the increasing ability of women to influence public discourse. The Contest for Knowledge reveals how these four women used the methods and themes of their male counterparts to add their voices to the vigorous and prolific debate over the education of women during the eighteenth century. In the texts gathered here, the women discuss the issues they themselves thought most urgent for the equality of women in Italian society specifically and in European culture more broadly. Their thoughts on this important subject reveal how crucial the eighteenth century was in the long history of debates about women in the academy.

The early history of Quebec, "the rocky perch of France and of the Faith" in the New World, is incomplete without the story of M re Marie. Called from a young age to a religious life, she received her first mystical experience at the age of seven. After a brief marriage cut short by the death of her husband, Marie was accepted into the Ursuline convent in Tours in 1631. Upon receiving further mystical experiences depicting her in a foreign land, she received permission to join the Jesuit mission in Quebec. There she founded, in 1639, the first convent school in North America, where she lived for thirty-three years, moving heroically but always calmly through the turbulent, harsh environment that was New France. To our great good fortune, this truly remarkable woman found a worthy biographer in Agnes Repplier, who tells M re Marie's story movingly, displaying her special gifts of accuracy of phrase, urbanity of manner, and incisiveness of mind, which won her renown as a gifted essayist in her own right. In M re Marie of the Ursulines we are blessed doubly: the story of an inspiring Catholic religious, told by a consummate storyteller.

In her ever-evolving career, the legendary filmmaker Agnes Varda has gone from being a photographer at the Avignon festival in the late 1940s, through being a director celebrated at the Cannes festival (Cleo de 5 a 7, 1962), to her more ironic self-proclaimed status as a 'jeune artiste plasticienne'. She has recently staged mixed-media projects and exhibitions all over the world from Paris (2006) to Los Angeles (2013-14). Agnes Varda Unlimited: Image, Music, Media reconsiders the legacy and potential of Varda's radical tour de force cinematique, as seen in the 22-DVD 'definitive' Tout(e) Varda, and her enduring artistic presence. These essays discuss not just when, but also how and why, Varda's renewed artistic forms have ignited with such creative force, and have been so inspiring an influence. The volume concludes with two remarkable interviews: one with Varda herself, and another a rare contribution from the leading actress of Cleo de 5 a 7, Corinne Marchand.

Agnes Lundell (1878-1936) oli Suomen ensimmäinen naisjuristi.Miltä tuntui pyytää varakanslerilta erivapautta yliopisto-opintoihin vuonna 1899? Millaista oli työskennellä virastossa, jossa kaikki työtoverit olivat miehiä? Miten asianajajakollegat suhtautuivat ainoaan naisjuristiin joukossaan? Aluksi Agnes Lundell tunsi ulkopuolisuutta ammatissaan. Hänen edellinen teoksensa Lasten takia sijoittui asianajomaailmaan. Viisi hänen teostaan on luettu äänikirjoiksi.

From Mafia Princess to Lesbian Chic isn't your typical memoir-it's Elaine Adita Agnes in all her loud, funny, unfiltered glory. Raised in a chaotic Italian household in Philadelphia, with mob connections looming in the background and food always on the table, Adita's childhood was equal parts love, fear, and pasta. Street-smart and South Philly-tough, she dishes on family feuds, forbidden romances, and the kind of darkly comic moments only she could turn into punchlines. Her lifelong struggle with food addiction and body image weaves through a story of reinvention: from surviving the shame of her father's underworld ties to carving out her own identity as a fiercely independent spiritual woman, a celebrated beauty industry pro, and a proud lesbian living life out loud. With wit as sharp as her shears, Adita brings readers into the salon chair of her world-a place where laughter, tears, and outrageous honesty all get equal time. Whether she's recounting mob stereotypes, portraying life at the ashram, or revealing the hard-earned lessons of love and loss, her story is as raw and relatable as it is wildly entertaining. This is a memoir for anyone who's ever wrestled with family baggage, searched for belonging, or simply loves a damn good story served with sass, sauce, and a side of soul. Elaine Adita Agnes is an author, speaker, fashionista hairstylist, meditation and yoga teacher and makeup artist, living her best and boldest life in Atlanta, Georgia
