This book explains Giacometti's purpose: to exorcise an existential void through his artistic return to the human figure. The question that dominated his work was how to restore in art the sense of the presence of the being in space. Giacometti sought tirelessly to establish the contingent volume of his figures, which became increasingly slender and threadlike, and to place the finiteness of the humanoid frame in reality. He began to develop heads and nudes modelled in the void. During that experience of nothingness, which opposed his quest for the absolute, he discovered a metaphor for the human condition.

The Swiss-born sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) is best known for his bronzes depicting ghostly and attenuated figures, which made him a key figure of twentieth-century sculpture. This impressive monograph is a compilation of the in-depth studies produced over the course of a decade by Veronique Wiesinger, director of the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti in Paris. In contrast with the scholars who focus their analysis on the crisis of the Second World War, Ms.Wiesinger believes the real break is one of a philosophical, and not historical, nature: it is permanent and integral to the work. There is a deep unity in Giacometti's approach to art, one that Michael Brenson underscored when he devoted his 1974 doctoral thesis to Giacometti's pre-war works, which he first identified as the key to understanding the rest of the artist's production. Indeed, these crises could more fruitfully be considered as oscillations, twists and turns, pendular movements or moments of epiphany. They were also plateaus for the artist to adjust and integrate his successive discoveries on the perception of reality. In these eight short illustrated essays, supported by biographical information, the book surveys the whole of Giacometti's career, from his relationship with his father to the importance of time and space in his work.

For the first time in recent history, a publication on Alberto Giacometti and his work is being released in Denmark. The book is published in connection with the exhibition "Alberto Giacometti – What Meets the Eye" and has been created through an exclusive collaboration between the Fondation Giacometti in Paris and SMK in Copenhagen. In the catalog, readers get up close to Giacometti's works and the research concept behind the exhibition. The catalog includes key, newly translated original texts by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and Giacometti himself, along with four current articles by Danish and French researchers. Notably, it also features illustrations of the exhibition's works in a new, improved quality, presented in a way that supports the research points and the exhibition's concept. The focal point is Giacometti's break with the surrealist environment, of which he was a part until 1934-35, and the affinity seen between his late work and post-war phenomenologically inspired thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In addition to presenting the thinking and experiences that underlie Giacometti's artistic method, the book also provides insight into post-war Paris, the places, and personalities that Giacometti surrounded himself with.

What Remains is the photographic research undertaken by Alberto Gandolfo in January 2017, which takes its cue from news stories from the most recent Italian past, focusing on family members and people close to the victims of tragic episodes, engaged in long battles in pursuit of the truth. We know the news stories, we remember how the faces of the tragically disappeared people were, but we know little or nothing about those who remain, about those people whom, in addition to experiencing great pain resulting from the loss of a loved one, inherit battles and take charge in seeking justice. Making their faces visible is the means to maintain high attention on the evolution of specific and very particular events, bearers of anonymous and silent revolutions, in which we are all necessarily involved. Text in English, French and Italian.
Alberto Burri: Black Work
Through a selection of thirty works created in a twenty-year time span (1972–92), including some unpublished and never before exhibited canvases from Italian private collections, this volume offers a perspective on the expressive outcomes that marked Alberto Burri’s practice after the 1950s and 1960s, at a time in which he had already gained international critical acclaim. Cellotex, which the artist had long used as a support for his compositions, became the “work” itself. Through a gradual process of stripping down, Burri reached the basic underlying element, i.e. the material that had previously been approached in view of something else. As is the case with his more iconic cycles (such as Sacchi, Legni and Combustioni plastiche), matter here continues to be the undisputed protagonist, capable of setting the rules and fixing compositional balances.

Saastamoisen säätiö on tukenut tämän kulttuurihistoriallisesti tärkeän teoksen julkaisemista suomeksi.
