Debates between Christians and atheists often focus on Genesis chapters 1 through 11. Honest Questions: A Personal Commentary on Genesis 1 through 11 discusses some of the controversial questions and then gives personal insights into deeper questions. For example, going beyond, "How long did Creation take?" the first chapter of Genesis answers the question, "Who created the universe?"God is not embarrassed by honest questions. He is the author of truth. Like most evangelicals, the author believes that God inspired the writers of the Bible. So, understanding what God says is important. Faith in God and confidence in the Word of God, the Bible, is the starting point of this book.Honest Questions: A Personal Commentary on Genesis 1 through 11 presents insights into the message of Genesis, and sometimes suggests an untraditional interpretation. Each chapter also includes devotional thoughts on the current passage for meditation. Even though the message of Genesis is thousands of years old, it is relevant to life today. One can identify with the people in the stories. Popular culture today is similar to ancient civilizations. God is the same today as back then. Unlike some others, this book is not designed to convince a skeptic to become a believer, nor to help win points in a debate with an atheist. This book also does not try to explain whether modern science and Genesis are compatible, nor does it argue whether secular mainstream science is valid, or not.Honest Questions: A Personal Commentary on Genesis 1 through 11 is not an academic commentary, but the opinions of evangelical scholars are carefully considered. The book includes meditations, a wealth of Bible cross-references, citations with a bibliography, and an index. The following is a list of chapter titles.Introduction Part I AdamHow long did Creation take?Did evolution really happen?Did mankind come from monkeys? Are people naturally good?Is revenge acceptable? How long did the patriarchs live? Allen has authored a number of devotional articles for The Upper Room and The Secret Place magazines, and has led Bible study groups for over 45 years. He is a long-time member of the American Scientific Affiliation, a fellowship of Christians in the sciences and engineering. Revelation: A Devotional Commentary is a study of the book of Revelation in the Bible which has a devotional emphasis. It applies Revelation to contemporary Christian living, rather than analyzing theology or current events. Revelation: A Devotional Commentary is for busy Christians who have pushed Revelation aside as too weird or too complicated. It suggests personal applications, builds faith, and stimulates worship.Revelation: A Devotional Commentary is based on the conviction that any ordinary Christian can read and understand the main ideas of Revelation, and find it relevant to life today. The body of this book is comments on the scriptures in everyday language, punctuated by frequent pauses for worship. It is not an academic commentary, but notes include cultural information and definitions of key Greek words from commonly available references, such as Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible and Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words.Revelation: A Devotional Commentary views Revelation as a panorama, a large tapestry, rather than as a predictive chronology of the second coming of Jesus. Even though Christians have many different interpretations of details about the second coming of Jesus, one thing is guaranteed, Jesus will come back to Earth again, this time with power and glory. Revelation: A Devotional Commentary focuses on these points about His second coming, which are clearly taught by other scriptures: (1) Jesus will personally return.(2) Believers will rise from the dead to eternal life.(3) Unbelievers will face eternal judgment.(4) Expect Him soon Features include the following. The full text of Revelation is included from the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), which is a modern translation based on the latest evangelical Bible scholarship.Dramatic woodcut prints by Albrecht D rerillustrate the scriptures. They were published over five hundred years ago.Meditations are set apart and scattered through the book for personal application, prayer, and worship.Personal study questions at the end of each sectionstimulate thinking about the main ideas of Revelation.Plans for discussion group study are in the appendix.A wealth of Bible cross references are noted. An index covers scripture references and topics. The following is a list of chapter titles.IntroductionOvercomersCreation GroansWarVictoryConclusion

Start your exploration of North America with New England, then proceed south through the Appalachian Highlands and the Coastal Plain before turning west to the Mississippi Valley and beyond to the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and Pacific Coast. Along the way author Nellie B. Allen introduces you to the geographical features that influence the crops grown and the minerals mined, with particular stress on the the way water flows and efforts to control its movement both for agricultural use and transportation of goods. Canada too is visited from east to west, then Mexico and the seven countries of Central America, followed by the islands of the Caribbean. A comprehensive tour that connects the reader to all the countries of North America leading to greater appreciation for its peoples, their various ways of living, and the agricultural and industrial pursuits they engage in. Questions throughout the text and suggested activities at the end of each chapter encourage the reader to consider the material more thoughtfully.
Embark on a voyage through all the countries of South America, with Nellie B. Allen as your guide, pointing out interesting sights along the route and sharing stories about them. In that way you will learn about such activities as the tapping of rubber trees in the Amazon rain forest, the picking of coffee berries in Sao Paolo, and the harvesting of cacao beans in Ecuador as well as getting to know something about the workers involved in their production. You will observe the crafting of Panama hats and the spinning of yarn and weaving of ponchos. You will wonder at all the mining activities: nitrate and guano on the coast and gold and other metals in the interior. And you will hear stories of the discovery of the continent by Europeans, how Magellan sailed through his strait and Pizarro conquered the Incas in Peru. More than anything you will come to appreciate that South America is a land of contrasts with moist rain forests and well-watered plains east of the Andes and desert areas to the west. But you must stay on your toes for the author will ask you why one side is wet, the other dry, which products are best cultivated in what environments, and where else in the world you have seen the same crops grown or minerals mined. Questions and activities at the end of each chapter help the reader strengthen his understanding of the material, while the conversational style makes the book a thoroughly enjoyable read. Take a guided tour of the various countries on the continent of Africa, then proceed to Madagascar, Australia, and New Zealand before concluding your journey with visits to principal island groups in the Pacific. Along the way author Nellie B. Allen will introduce you to how geographical features influence the way of life of the residents in significant ways, from clothing and housing to food and occupational pursuits. You will learn how topographical features and proximity to bodies of water affect the climate, which in turn determines what foodstuffs naturally grow in a region and what crops may thrive there if planted. This comprehensive tour will lead you to a greater appreciation for the peoples you encounter along the way, their various ways of living, and the agricultural and industrial pursuits they engage in. Questions throughout the text and suggested activities at the end of each chapter encourage you to consider the material more thoughtfully.
Join author Nellie B. Allen as she leads you on a journey of discovery through Europe, which is home to more than twenty countries though one of the smaller continents. She explains in the introduction that with peoples geographically isolated by bodies of water and mountain ranges, it is no wonder that so many languages and customs arose, with many Europeans able to speak multiple languages. Blessed with an abundance of natural resources, Europe quickly became a leader in manufacturing and commerce with robust shipbuilding, fishing, and dairying industries often spanning multiple countries. Author Nellie B. Allen introduces you to these, but also explores the cultivation of some specialty products such as cork in Portugal, olives in Spain, vineyards in Spain, linen in Ireland, and silk in Italy. With each country she visits, she tells you about the people that live there: what they typically eat, how they dress, what their homes are like, and the pastimes they enjoy. Questions throughout the text and suggested activities at the end of each chapter encourage the reader to think further about the material.
