Amber Panels of Konigsberg: A Novel by David Eilers
Targeted for abduction, forty-year-old Peen Rogers' morning routine is turned upside down, forcing him to evade international criminals hunting a mysterious art treasure. Peen bands together with quick-witted Tora Armstrong, a history doctoral student who's desperately searching for Peen's uncle, Professor Edmund Rogers. Thwarting their efforts are Damon Kant, a ruthless man who will kill anyone that blocks his pursuit of the panels, and FBI Agent Michael Jorden, who seeks Peen in connection with murder. To find Professor Rogers, Peen and Tora must elude their pursuers and solve one of the greatest art mysteries of all time: the disappearance of the Amber Panels, a world wonder created in the 1700s that vanished during World War II. But, can they do it in time? Here are some reviews from readers of the pre-release version: David Eilers has written an exciting fast paced yet well balanced thriller. The compelling story spans both gritty and beautiful locations while making a jump from war-torn Europe to the supposedly peaceful American Northwest, all the while exposing the characters' personalities in ways that add proper depth to the story. Likable but not perfect heroes, and sinister yet understandable villains. And somehow Dave weaves in jeep or two. I can recommend this book without reservation; however, it opens fast and keeps moving, so you may want to plan for reading it straight through. This book will also make great movie material. (In a way, it reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest.) - Guy Kathe You know, I think this book is on par with most any well known author I've ever read, in fact it's much better than a lot of the Clive Cussler books. His stories are great but the banter between his characters sometimes is pretty unrealistic. - Bob Christy Amber panels........never would have picked up such a book in a bookstore.....skimmed thru it backwards and said...this is going to be boring. Not my cup of tea. Then.. I got bored and needed to read something...so I started in. Holy historical novel, batman, you have a HIT. Could NOT put it down. Another home run. Better than your last, which was great. I loved how you got jeeps involved. - Bill Foshay

When Detective Inspector Amber Clarke answered the phone at the Hovea Hill Police Station she was shocked. Hardly anything happened in this small town. She had been rather bored since starting work at 6am. There had been paperwork and more paperwork, but here at last was real work. She rang her Sergeant, Martin Blackwood, then HQ in Perth.Amber went out the back of the station to her police car and set off to the place that elderly Mrs Moorehouse had described. She parked the car in a space at the beginning of the cul de sac and met the elderly woman. Amber came to where the body lay and was aghast. What a terrible thing to happen to a young woman about her own age, in her late twenties. She lay sprawled out on the gravel, dressed in a red rain coat. The hair that showed outside the hood was fair like Amber's own. Ants were crawling around the body and somewhere a crow was cawing in a tree above. The closer Amber came to the truth of what happened to the young woman the more danger she faced. Would she be able to solve this difficult case with its many twists and turns?

Myriad wonderful characters populate the pages of Anne Mustoe's fascinating book as she pedals along three very different, but equally evocative, roads - the Amber Route from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the Santa Fe Trail from the Missouri River to New Mexico and the Pilgrims' Way of St James from Le Puy to Santiago de Compostela. Battling against ferocious winds in Jutland, blizzards in the Rockies, traffic jams of cyclists along the Danube and menus in Czech, Hungarian and Basque, Mustoe survives with her usual fortitude and wry humour, even when she is knocked off her bike by a short-sighted nonagenarian in a Fiat Panda.

Adams County, Washington, is home to farmlands on the Columbia Plateau that produce more crops than might be expected of its semiarid soils. But while unique in its geography and history, it also faces many of the problems confronting farmers throughout rural America.Seasoned journalist Steve Turner, having spent time in Adams County as a young harvest hand, returned to the region to portray farm life and history in a land where change is a subtle but powerful constant. Amber Waves and Undertow interweaves family narratives, historical episodes, and Turner's own experiences to illuminate the transformation of rural America from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.Whether distilling the lore of wheat and potato agriculture or describing action at a combine demolition derby, Turner celebrates both the usual and the unusual among the local residents. He blends stories of pioneer settlers with vignettes of present-day life, introducing readers to the characters - the hardworking and the eccentric, the old-timers and the Latino newcomers - who populate this corner of America. In the mode of John McPhee and Wendell Berry, Turner's lyrical prose conveys his affection for both the land and its inhabitants. Amber Waves and Undertow is a thoughtful depiction of an exceptional place that puts the difficulties of individual farmers in national and global contexts, showing us that only by understanding the past of rural America can we confront its future challenges.

Inspired by her Polish American heritage and her first visit to her family's homeland in 1996, Linda Nemec Foster's stunning new collection poignantly reflects on the immigrant experience- an experience of loss and discovery, of ambivalence and pride, of deep tragedy and redemption. Foster's own ethnicity as the daughter of second-generation immigrants from Poland is colored by America's somewhat disinterested view of the ""other"" Europe- only recently emerged from history's dark shadow- and of a country that for a hundred years did not exist as a political entity. In the book's opening poem, The Awkward Young Girl Approaching You, she struggles with this sense of ethnic identity: ""Who will speak for the dis-possessed, / those who come from nowhere, / whose birthplace cannot be found / on any map . . . ?"" Foster's attempts to reclaim an ethnic heritage, to search for herself in the mirror of her family's history, resonate throughout her verse.Divided into four parts and employing an impressive variety of poetic styles and forms, Amber Necklace from Gda´nsk moves from lyric childhood memories and descriptions of immigrant life to prose poems that interweave the mythic and historic past with the present. Foster captures the stark sense of loss that permeates Poland- from Chopin's self-exile, to the silence of rain, to the overwhelming horror of the Holocaust- and concludes with a group of poems that reveal resilience in the face of a haunted past and an iconoclastic present. Imaginative, powerful, surprising, and magical, Foster's lines breathe life into the land, history, and culture of her ancestors. Who will speak for the dispossessed? These poems will.
