Playing with Languages

Playing with Languages

Over several generations villagers of Dominica have been shifting from Patwa, an Afro-French creole, to English, the official language. Despite government efforts at Patwa revitalization and cultural heritage tourism, rural caregivers and teachers prohibit children from speaking Patwa in their presence. Drawing on detailed ethnographic fieldwork and analysis of video-recorded social interaction in naturalistic home, school, village and urban settings, the study explores this paradox and examines the role of children and their social worlds. It offers much-needed insights into the study of language socialization, language shift and Caribbean children’s agency and social lives, contributing to the burgeoning interdisciplinary study of children’s cultures. Further, it demonstrates the critical role played by children in the transmission and transformation of linguistic practices, which ultimately may determine the fate of a language.

Have you been searching for healing outside the confines of conventional medicine? If so, have you wondered if you are more than just a physical body? Does this more complete Self include subtle energetic components that are even more powerful than your physical self? Are there parts of you that go on even after your physical death? Finally, which alternative therapies would be most beneficial for you and your unique physical and energetic needs? Living in Synchrony provides answers to all of these questions and more. It starts by describing an overarching model of who each of us is as a human being, and the distinct roles of the physical and energy bodies that comprise our complete Self. It then provides guidance in utilizing a wide variety of therapies, organizing them according to the different parts of us they address. This information will enable you to not only become healthier, but happier too. An important key is knowing that you already possess great power as a natural human being-power that you may not be consciously aware of, and that could be compromised by attempts to engineer your physical body. By remaining true to your complete human Self and becoming aware of how to heal it, you will be enabled to live in synchrony not only within, but also without.

Physical Activity and Rehabilitation in Life-threatening Illness

Physical Activity and Rehabilitation in Life-threatening Illness

This book is a comprehensive summary of the recommendations for best practice, and current evidence, for physical activity and rehabilitation of functional deficits in individuals with end-stage diseases. While advances in technology have afforded us the opportunity to live longer lives, it has also demanded an expansion of focus of medical interventions towards palliative care to enhance the quality of life.Exercise and healthcare professionals must strive to broaden their perspectives to provide for the unique needs of these individuals, and to successfully engage with them, to achieve the most positive outcomes throughout the entire continuum of care. Healthcare providers play a critical role in advocating for care to allow individuals to remain physically active for as long as possible, even in the face of declining health. Finally, due to the increasing and progressively emergent healthcare utilization required by these individuals, a significant cost burden is experienced by healthcare systems, patients, families, and payers. There is evidence of substantial protective effects of physical activity, prevention, safety, and rehabilitative procedures to reduce hospital readmissions, reduce length of stay, and assist in avoiding unwarranted or unnecessary diagnostic tests or procedures.Physical activity has been proven to have a substantial impact and protective effects on virtually all medical conditions. During curative management, but especially during transitional phases to palliative care, other strategies need enhanced consideration to complement the existing plan of care and help to improve patient’s quality of life. Ideally, physical medicine would be at the forefront of allowing individuals to live their best life until the very end.Physical Activity and Rehabilitation in Life-threatening Illness is key reading for academics and policy makers in physical activity, international exercise, wellness and rehabilitation, and related disciplines, as well as research-focused clinicians in settings where patients with advanced illness are frequently encountered.

How leaders from the best workplaces build trust in their organizations The Trustworthy Leader reveals the benefits organizations enjoy when trustworthy behavior is practiced consistently by their leaders. Drawing from examples from the Best Companies to Work For, Lyman, cofounder of Great Place to Work Institute, explains that being trustworthy means that leaders' behaviors are rooted in their commitment to the value of trust and not simply in an imitation of the practices of others. She identifies six elements that reflect a leader's trustworthiness: honor, inclusion, engaging followers, sharing information, developing others, and moving through uncertainty to pursue opportunities. Features leaders from great companies such as REI, Wegman's, R.W. Baird, TDIndustries, and moreBased on more than 20 years of rigorous research into the value of trust in companies large and small and its link to financial and organizational performancePublished to coincide with the release of the FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For 2012 list This book offers a key to developing high levels of trust, a critical endeavor in an age when seemingly every day a story of a leader's lapse in ethical behavior makes headlines.

Kierkegaard and the Treachery of Love

Kierkegaard and the Treachery of Love

Amy Laura Hall

Cambridge University Press
2002
pokkari
This is a major study of Kierkegaard and love. Amy Laura Hall explores Kierkegaard’s description of love’s treachery, difficulty, and hope, reading his Works of Love as a text that both deciphers and complicates the central books in his pseudonymous canon: Fear and Trembling, Repetition, Either/Or, and Stages on Life’s Way. In all of these works, the characters are, as in real life, complex and incomplete, and the conclusions are perplexing. Hall argues that a spiritual void brings each text into being, and her interpretation is as much about faith as about love. In a style that is both scholarly and lyrical, she intimates answers to some of the puzzles, making a poetic contribution to ethics and the philosophy of religion.
My Terminal Life

My Terminal Life

If you were diagnosed with a terminal illness today, what would you do with the rest of your life?People sometimes ask themselves this question theoretically as a kind of inspirational exercise. And most say things like quitting their job and traveling the world, or going skydiving, or any number of things that might make them feel more alive. But for Amy Lyn Schnitzler, there was nothing theoretical about the question.Amy was first diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2016. She was 26-years-old and about to start her graduate studies in opera performance. By November, it had progressed to metastatic; a terminal diagnosis. For Amy, her diagnosis was everything you might expect - heartbreaking, fear-inducing and painful - but it was also a wake up call. Like many young women, she'd spent much of her life unhappy with herself. She looked in the mirror and only saw flaws. She often doubted her worthiness and suffered bouts of depression. Then came the cancer, and along with it, more depression and suicidal thoughts, but eventually a newfound sense of appreciation and self-love as well. She didn't want to go skydiving or traveling. She wanted to live. Not for adventure, but for herself and those who loved her. And that meant starting treatment her way, postponing graduate school, and learning all she could about staying as healthy as possible-physically, mentally, spiritually.Throughout, Amy was an active blogger whose powerful writing educated her readers, supported others with the disease, and unflinchingly captured the rawness of the downs and the (fleeting) ecstacy of the ups along her personal journey. These posts and other writings have become My Terminal Life: Cancer Habitation and Other Life Adventures. Her posts are funny, raw, and honest. They take us from her body shame to walking a fashion show runway in lingerie, and from the depths of her despair to a determination not only to live, but to thrive. Through it all, she portrayed a heroic willingness to be transparent about her experiences so that others might better understand. Amy was passionate, wise, and more self aware than most, and her lively, mischievous, authentic self shines through on every page. But this isn't just Amy's story. In the four years she lived with metastatic breast cancer, Amy became a fierce advocate for herself and others facing similar circumstances. She wanted to combat what she felt to be the misguided pink ribbon awareness message and the common misperception that all breast cancer is treatable or preventable. "Metastatic breast cancer doesn't need more fluffy pink ribbons," she said. "It needs a cure." Amy devoted the rest of her life and this book to that cause. My Terminal Life is for medical students and medical care providers, as well as mental health professionals, who need to be mindful of the complex journey of the human behind the diagnosis. It's for those living with any deadly disease and the people who love them. And it's for anyone with questions about their own mortality and what it might be like to grapple with it, as Amy did, eventually facing it with grace, courage, and a whole lot of CBD oil

Amy Lawless is a brazen poet with an eye for the absurd and the darkly comic. Her work lies on the border of that which makes us laugh and that which frightens us. Lawless' poems confront the basic human emotion of isolation with a skewed, flippant perspective that is callous to the tired sentiment of loneliness. This is where the awesome courage of her poems lies. But these poems are first and foremost entertaining. This rarity in modern poetry is collected here in this fabulous debut.

The century spanning the wars of the roses and the reigns of the Tudor kings was a volatile time of battle and bloodshed, execution and unexpected illness. Life could be nasty, brutish and short. Some met their end in battle, others were dragged to the block, losing everything for daring to aspire to the throne. Some were lost in mysterious circumstances, like Edward V, the elder of the Princes in the Tower. But the majority of these young men died in their teens, on the brink of manhood. They represent the lost paths of history, the fascinating “what-ifs” of the houses of York and Tudor. They also diverted the route of dynastic inheritance, with all the complicated implications that could bring, passing power into some unlikely hands. This book examines ten such figures in detail, using their lives to build a narrative of this savage century.
