Brown Saviors and Their Others

Brown Saviors and Their Others

Arjun Shankar

DUKE UNIVERSITY PRESS
2023
sidottu
In Brown Saviors and Their Others Arjun Shankar draws from his ethnographic work with an educational NGO to investigate the practices of “brown saviors”-globally mobile, dominant-caste, liberal Indian and Indian diasporic technocrats who drive India’s help economy. Shankar argues that these brown saviors actually reproduce many of the racialized values and ideologies associated with who and how to help that have been passed down from the colonial period, while masking other operations of power behind the racial politics of global brownness. In India, these operations of power center largely on the transnational labor politics of caste. Ever attentive to moments of discomfort and complicity, Shankar develops a method of “nervous ethnography” to uncover the global racial hierarchies, graded caste stratifications, urban/rural distinctions, and digital panaceas that shape the politics of help in India. Through nervous critique, Shankar introduces a framework for the study of the global help economies that reckons with the ongoing legacies of racial and caste capitalism.

There has been enormous growth in the use of medical implants. However, in the case of hip replacement, loosening of metallic prosthesis fixed with polymethylmethylacrylate bone cement has resulted in painstaking revision surgery, which is a major problem for the patient, surgeon, and biomedical technology itself. In fact, global recognition of this problem led to the development of cementless fixation through the novel introduction of a bioactive hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating on biomedical-grade metallic implants. Since then, a wide variety of coating methods have evolved to make the HAp coatings on metallic implants more reliable.Microplasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings discusses plasma spraying and other related HAp coating techniques, focusing on the pros and cons of macroplasma sprayed (MAPS)- and microplasma sprayed (MIPS)-HAp coatings. The book begins by explaining what a biomaterial really is, what the frequently used term biocompatibility stands for, and why it is so important for biomaterials to be biocompatible. It then:Examines the structural, chemical, macromechanical, micro/nanomechanical, and tribological properties and residual stress of HAp coatingsEvaluates the efficacies under simulated body fluid immersion for MAPS- and MIPS-HAp coatings developed on biomedical implant-grade SS316L substratesOffers a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art in vivo studies of MIPS-HAp coatings, presenting the results of pioneering research related to bone defect fixationShedding light on the future scope and possibilities of MIPS-HAp coatings, Microplasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings provides a valuable reference for students, researchers, and practitioners of biomedical engineering and materials science.

Elliptically Contoured Models in Statistics and Portfolio Theory fully revises the first detailed introduction to the theory of matrix variate elliptically contoured distributions. There are two additional chapters, and all the original chapters of this classic text have been updated. Resources in this book will be valuable for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in statistics and related fields of finance and engineering. Those interested in multivariate statistical analysis and its application to portfolio theory will find this text immediately useful. ?In multivariate statistical analysis, elliptical distributions have recently provided an alternative to the normal model. Elliptical distributions have also increased their popularity in finance because of the ability to model heavy tails usually observed in real data. Most of the work, however, is spread out in journals throughout the world and is not easily accessible to the investigators. A noteworthy function of this book is the collection of the most important results on the theory of matrix variate elliptically contoured distributions that were previously only available in the journal-based literature. The content is organized in a unified manner that can serve an a valuable introduction to the subject.?

Failure

Failure

Wall Street and Silicon Valley – the two worlds this book examines – promote the illusion that scarcity can and should be eliminated in the age of seamless “flow.” Instead, Appadurai and Alexander propose a theory of habitual and strategic failure by exploring debt, crisis, digital divides, and (dis)connectivity. Moving between the planned obsolescence and deliberate precariousness of digital technologies and the “too big to fail” logic of the Great Recession, they argue that the sense of failure is real in that it produces disappointment and pain. Yet, failure is not a self-evident quality of projects, institutions, technologies, or lives. It requires a new and urgent understanding of the conditions under which repeated breakdowns and collapses are quickly forgotten. By looking at such moments of forgetfulness, this highly original book offers a multilayered account of failure and a general theory of denial, memory, and nascent systems of control.

Forest dwellers who have roamed the indian subcontinent for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years have a larger story to be narrated. In India, consolidation of forest laws started during the British period with the inception of the Indian Forest Department in 1864 and scientific management of forests was introduced for planned and systematic management of the forests. Commercial interests of the then British Government motivated it to declare more and more lands as reserved forests, without ascertaining the rights of the tribals and other forest dwellers. Even after independence in 1947, during the process of amalgamation of princely states, the activity of consolidation of government forests continued. However, no effective steps were taken to simultaneously settle the rights of tribals and other forest dwellers. The absence of records of rights that never existed for these people became the main constraint in resolving this issue. As a result, the rural people, especially tribals and forest dwellers who have been living in the forest since time immemorial, have come to be erroneously looked upon as encroachers of forest lands. This book will take you through the history of forest laws, international conventions, and various law/ directions which protects these forest dwellers from illegal, arbitrary actions by the executives against them.
