Robert Ross was one of the first people that Aubrey Beardsley met when he arrived in London to make his name in 1892. Within six years the young artist was dead; but the work he produced in that short time revolutionised British art, and he was fixed forever in the public imagination as one of the leading spirits of the decadent era. Like many others, Ross was taken not only by the evident originality and genius of Beardsley’s work, but also by his character, remembering the ‘delightful and engaging smile both for friends and strangers’, his modesty, wit, erudition, and – contrary to popular opinion – his ‘briskness and virility’, or, as Beerbohm put it, his ‘stony common sense.’ Beardsley’s reputation, both artistic and personal, was caught up in the hurricane that overtook avant garde art after the trial of Oscar Wilde. Ross set out in his pioneering biography to redress the balance. He memorialised the worth of the man he knew, and established the seriousness of his art, its roots in the work of the Old Masters (of whom Beardsley had considerable knowledge). This combination of personal memoir and informed analysis by someone at the heart of the artistic world of the 1890’s makes this biography one of the most fascinating and evocative documents of the period. This republication is a close copy of the first stand-alone edition of 1909. It comes complete with all its original illustrations (and the advertisements for Beardsley’s publications) and the catalogue of Beardsley’s works by Aymer Vallance, which is still the cornerstone of Beardsley studies. It is introduced by Matthew Sturgis, Beardsley’s most distinguished recent biographer.

When Aubrey Beardsley died in 1898, he was aged only 25. In his short but crowded career he had become one of the defining figures of the fin-de-siècle, a precocious draughtsman who redefined the limits of black-and-white art. His erotic, decadent illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome set the tone for his style: by turns shocking, facetious and cruel. Beloved by Burne-Jones, cursed by William Morris, he was the intimate of Wilde, the rival of Whistler, the friend of Beerbohm, Sickert, Ada Leverson and William Rothenstein. His deliberate manipulation of press and public, his awareness of both art and the market-place, made him one of the first truly modern artists.

Discover the work of Aubrey Beardsley, a complex and intriguing artist who shocked and delighted late-Victorian London Aubrey Beardsley (1872&;1898) is best remembered for his powerful illustrations for Salome by Oscar Wilde. Spanning just seven years, his intense, prolific career as a draftsman and illustrator was cut short when he died at the age of 25. His subversive black-and-white drawings and his complex persona became synonymous with decadence: He alighted on the perverse and erotic aspects of life and legend, shocking audiences with his bizarre sense of humor and fascination with the grotesque. His keen observation of his contemporaries makes him of his time, but his distinct style has resonated with subsequent generations. A major influence on the development of Art Nouveau, and on psychedelic pop culture and design in the late 1960s, Beardsley&;s drawings remain a key reference for many artists today. Here, short essays on aspects of Beardsley&;s remarkable career complement reproductions of his fascinating work.

Aubrey Beardsley was one of the most prolific artists of the 1890s London avant-garde. While his career only lasted six years before he succumbed to tuberculosis, Beardsley produced over 1,100 works as a draftsman. Because his technique utilized the photomechanical reproduction process of line block, his work was able to be seen by the general public rather than only the elite few. Beardsley's images were controversial in the face of Victorian-era sensibilities, regularly critiquing the repressive views of sexuality, gender roles, and consumerism seen in society. During his short but impressive career, he created illustrations for Oscar Wilde, Alexander Pope, Aristophanes, and others. This catalog documents the printed work of Beardsley, containing images of his work from the Rowe Collection, a condensed biography on Aubrey Beardsley by Sara Smith, and an essay by Christina Glover describing the line block technique. Accompanying the catalog illustrations are commentaries by Patrick M. Rowe.

Aubrey Levinthal’s paintings capture the quiet intensity of everyday life through translucent layers of oil paint, subtle gestures and atmospheric domestic scenes. Her work, often rooted in the personal – from family meals to moments of solitude – reflects themes of love, isolation, intimacy and self-reflection. Using thin washes of colour on wood panels, Levinthal explores the passage of time and interiority, often portraying herself and her loved ones in tender, introspective moments. Scenes like a woman gazing into a mirror, a mother and child in bed, or a solitary figure at lunch are imbued with emotion and psychological nuance. Influenced by artists from Giotto to Bonnard and Modersohn-Becker, Levinthal plays with perspective, scale and composition to explore perception and identity. Flowers, especially tulips and daffodils, often appear in her work as symbols of beauty and transience. Whether depicting sleep, reflection or the quiet spaces between people, Levinthal’s paintings invite us to consider the depth in small gestures and fleeting moments. Through a delicate balance of abstraction and realism, she evokes the complexity of inner life and the resonance of lived experience, portraying humans as simultaneously strong and vulnerable, grounded in routine yet rich with unspoken emotion. The publication Mirror Matter has been produced by Ingleby, Edinburgh, to accompany Levinthal’s first solo exhibition at the gallery in summer 2025. It features an essay by Jennifer Higgie and an interview with the artist by Hettie Judah. Designed by Jo Deans and printed by Albe De Coker, Antwerp, Mirror Matter is co-published by Ingleby, Edinburgh, and Anomie Publishing, London in an edition of 1500 copies. Aubrey Levinthal is a painter living and working in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. The city is important to her, she was born there in 1986, gained her BA from the Pennsylvania State University in 2008 and completed her MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2011. She has continued to make the city her home, and something of its light and colour has seeped into the muted, often melancholy tones of her palette. Her work has been shown extensively in the USA, most recently at the ICA, Boston, in A Place for Me: Figurative Painting Now, and at the Flag Foundation, New York. Following her 2023 ‘Instalment’, Mirror Matter is her first full solo exhibition at Ingleby.

The first comprehensive exploration of Aubrey Williams’s art, revealing the cross-cultural dynamics and transformations connecting Caribbean, British, and Atlantic histories The abstract paintings of Guyanese artist Aubrey Williams (1926–1990) evoke elemental forces of earth, fire, and cataclysm. At the same time, through these paintings, Williams bore witness to the deep historical interconnections linking the Caribbean, Britain and wider Atlantic worlds as they transformed through colonial and postcolonial eras. This book is the first comprehensive investigation of Williams’s practice. With an introduction by Kobena Mercer and groundbreaking new scholarship by Ian Dudley, Claudia Hucke, and Giulia Smith, this volume addresses the Indigenous, ecological, and transnational dimensions of Williams’s modernist oeuvre. In addition, a memoir by the artist’s daughter, Maridowa Williams, offers an intimate look at the biographical dimensions of his work. Alongside an extraordinary and revealing selection of unpublished and out-of-print writings by Williams, artworks illustrating the full range of his practice—from early abstracts and lesser-known murals and portraits to such later major works as the Shostakovich, Bird Paintings, Olmec-Maya & Now and Cosmos series—illuminate the complex cross-cultural dynamics at play across Williams’s “World Aesthetic.” Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
