Demographic Differences in Organizations

Demographic Differences in Organizations

Anne S. Tsui; Barbara A. Gutek

Lexington Books
1999

Although diversity is the current buzzword in management theory, we still have only a slight understanding of how demographic differences within organizations influence individuals' attitudes and behavior toward each other and the organization as a whole. Demographic Differences in Organizations fills this void. Meticulously researched and authored by two respected scholars—one working in this country, the other in Hong Kong—this book addresses the problems and benefits associated with an increasingly diverse global workforce. Unlike most other researchers in the field, Anne Tsui and Barbara Gutek are interested in the effects of demographic diversity on all members of an organization, not just minority or newly arrived groups. This broad-based, highly readable study should be read by managers, academics in business management and social psychology, and students of business at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Health Economics: An International Perspective is the only textbook to provide a truly international, comparative treatment of health economics. Offering an analysis of health systems across borders, the fourth edition of this key text has been updated and revised to take account of changes in a host of countries. This edition features an expanded introduction, providing better grounding for many of the examples that come in subsequent chapters and making it easier for non-health care experts to see the links between the theory, the examples and the health care system components. It also boasts a restructured format, dividing the book into two broad sections: the first focuses on ideas and principles, along with evidence on their applications in the health sector, whereas the second focuses on introducing core tools and techniques used in applied health economics research.Further updates to this edition include: two new chapters on applied econometrics; a new chapter on equity, focusing on equity in access to health care, paying particular attention to how access and need for health care are defined and measured in applied research; a new chapter on emerging issues for health systems that are emanating from a series of global transitions both within (e.g. demographic change, epidemiological change, the global resolution on universal health coverage) and without the health sector (e.g. economic transitions).Throughout the text, examples and illustrations are taken from a wide range of settings and world regions, providing a unique overview of the performance of different health systems.

Uses for Journal Keeping

Uses for Journal Keeping

This text reports on an ethnographic study of journal-keeping in a university science class. The author spent a summer semester attending a general education class in geology as a participant observer, took extensive notes, interviewed class members and the professor, and analyzed journal entries and other documents related to the class. She provides an example of ethnographic methods to be of use to other composition researchers, especially in her careful attention to reflexivity, that is, the effect of the researcher and the research on data. The book provides a detailed exploration of journal keeping from the perspective of both the students and the professor, as well as case studies of how two students in particular used journal keeping. Journal entries are examined not simply as texts produced by individuals for a class assignment, but as the outcome of a socio-political process, including the goals of the general education curriculum, the goals of the geology course and its instructor, the students' personal and educational goals, the institutional constraints on the professor, the methods of the researchers, and the dynamics of classroom interaction.
