Barbara Ann Teer and the National Black Theatre

Barbara Ann Teer and the National Black Theatre

Lundeana Marie Thomas

CRC Press Inc
1997
sidottu
While chronicling the development of Teer's National Black Theatre of Harlem, this study explores the National Black Theatre's quest to develop a new black theory of acting. Teer's theory of performance was realized in a theater that combined elements of Pentacostal worship and African ritual, melding spontaneity from the performers, percussive music, singing, dancing, emotional expression from both actors and audience, and spectacle. The National Black Theatre's major achievement is the creation of an original art form that helps African Americans identify with their roots and invites spontaneous audience interaction. The study offers the National Black Theatre as a model African American community theater with valuable lessons for other theaters. The innovative methods of the National Black Theatre provide a model for enlightening and sensitizing audiences to cultural diversity. A pioneering institution, the National Black Theatre has proven itself over its 25 year history to be a cultural treasure and the quintessential theater in Harlem. Also includes maps.(Bibliography, and index; foreword by Dr. Winona Fletcher, Professor Emeritus of Theater and Drama and Afro-American Studies; Founder of the National Black Theatre)
The Collected Poems of Barbara Guest

The Collected Poems of Barbara Guest

Barbara Guest; Peter Gizzi

Wesleyan University Press

nidottu
One of the most notable members of the New York School—and its best-known woman—Barbara Guest began writing poetry in the 1950s in company that included John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Frank O’Hara, and James Schuyler. And from the beginning, her practice placed her at the vanguard of American writing. Guest’s poetry, saturated in the visual arts, extended the formal experiments of modernism, and played the abstract qualities of language against its sensuousness and materiality. Now, for the first time, all of her published poems have been brought together in one volume, offering readers and scholars unprecedented access to Guest’s remarkable visionary work. This Collected Poems moves from her early New York School years through her more abstract later work, including some final poems never before published. Switching effortlessly from the real to the dreamlike, the observed to the imagined, this is poetry both gentle and piercing—seemingly simple, but truly and beautifully dislocating.

This Reader collects in a single volume some of the most influential essays written by Barbara Johnson over the course of her thirty-year career as a pioneering literary theorist and cultural critic. Johnson achieved renown early in her career, both as a brilliant student of the Yale School of literary criticism and as the translator of Jacques Derrida's Dissemination. She went on to lead the way in extending the insights of structuralism and poststructuralism into newly emerging fields now central to literary studies, fields such as gender studies, African American studies, queer theory, and law and literature. Stunning models of critical reading and writing, her essays cultivate rigorous questioning of universalizing assumptions, respect for otherness and difference, and an appreciation of ambiguity.Along with the classic essays that established her place in literary scholarship, this Reader makes available a selection of Johnson's later essays, brilliantly lucid and politically trenchant works exploring multilingualism and translation, materiality, ethics, subjectivity, and sexuality. The Barbara Johnson Reader offers a historical guide through the metamorphoses and tumultuous debates that have defined literary study in recent decades, as viewed by one of critical theory's most astute thinkers.

When Reno Republican Barbara Vucanovich was elected to Congress in 1982, she became the first Nevada woman ever elected to a federal office, and the first person to represent Nevada's newly created Second Congressional District Campaigning as a ""tough grandmother,"" she distinguished herself during her fourteen-year service in the U.S. House of Representatives by her indefatigable efforts on behalf of her state, her commitment to the conservative ideals of her party and the needs of her constituency, and her commonsense approach to politics and her own life. In this engaging, richly informative memoir, Vucanovich reflects with candor and modesty on her political career and the long road that led to it - her years as mother of a growing family, businesswoman, and community and Republican Party volunteer, and her introduction to politics as the northern Nevada manager of several of Paul Laxalt's campaigns. Encouraged by Laxalt to run for Nevada's new congressional seat, she became a sixty-one-year-old first-time political candidate. Vucanovich's lively accounts of campaigning and office-holding offer a rare insider's view of the day-to-day realities of a political career - the excitement and exhaustion of hard-fought campaigns; the endless cross-country commutes to maintain contact with constituents; the inner workings of Congress as bills are written, debated, and voted on. Her profiles of other politicians, from Reno city leaders to Nevada state and national officeholders to her congressional colleagues to presidents of the United States, offer valuable insight into the personalities and politics of some of the most important American political figures of the past half-century. This is a book that offers any reader, of whatever political persuasion, an exceptionally vivid account of politics on both the state and national levels during a notably turbulent era.

Recent film works from the international duo exploring cultural change Working together for a decade, artists Bárbara Wagner (born 1980, Brazil) and Benjamin De Burca (born 1975, Germany) produce films and video installations that feature protagonists engaged in cultural production. The duo typically collaborates with nonactors to make their films, from writing scripts to staging performances on camera. The resulting works are marked by economic conditions and social tensions present in the contexts in which they are filmed, giving urgency to new forms of self-representation through voice, movement and drama. Accompanying the exhibition at the New Museum—which focuses on projects that the artists filmed in Brazil over the past seven years, as well as a new commissioned piece featuring the theater group Coletivo Banzeiros—this volume includes a conversation between the artists and Margot Norton, as well as texts by Vivian Crockett, Bernardo Mosqueira and Wendelien van Oldenborgh.

A revered Seattle-based artist calls for hope, faith, and truthBarbara Earl Thomas's new body of work carries within it the sediments of history and grapples with race and the color line. At the heart of it lies a story of life and death, hope and resilience—a child's survival. With her quietly glowing portraits of young Black boys and girls, Thomas puts before us the humble question: can we see, and be present to, the humanity, the trust, the hopes and dreams of each of these children? The Geography of Innocence offers a reexamination of Black portraiture and the preconceived dichotomies of innocence and guilt and sin and redemption, and the ways in which these notions are assigned and distorted along cultural and racial lines. Two interconnected visual arguments unfold: a portrait gallery of children from the artist's extended community and an illuminated environment that appears like a delicate paper lantern. To accompany the visual elements, the book's essays examine Thomas's work in the context of different art historical portraiture traditions and political relevance. Thomas also contributes an interview and an essay reflecting on the current climate in which the work exists.
A Bemerton Anthology: poems of George Herbert and Barbara Murray
Eleven poems of George Herbert selected by Barbara Murray, and twenty-two poems by Barbara herself. With drawings by Guy Ottewell of Bemerton near Salisbury in England, where George Herbert was parish priest from 1630 to 1633."Most of Barbara Murray's] poems are, as true poetry is, driven by real feeling and crafted out of surprisingly found words. The first few . . . seem the most necessitated, meant, in any language; beside them, many other poems seem to be acts of play that could have been left undone."

Barbara Anderson was a Jehovah's Witness from 1954 to 1997. But while working as a researcher and writer at their worldwide headquarters from 1982 thru 1992, something went terribly wrong. Barbara uncovered a conflict that would derail her plans, and change her life forever. Her unique story shines a bright light on Watchtower/JW.ORG policies that not only protect sexual predators, but unduly influence members to believe policies and beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses are Bible-based and inspired from God. Barbara's story also includes unprecedented commentary from Bonnie Zieman, M.Ed., psychotherapist, and Jon Atack. Bonnie and Jon have written extensively about coercive control and report behind the scenes, while Barbara shares her life story, about what was going on in her high-control world and subsequent escape, from a physical and psychological point of view. Praise for Barbara Anderson Uncensored - Eyewitness to Deceit: Nothing short of awe-inspiring Barbara's valor in the face of an epic David versus Goliath battle to protect children against the policies of an international organization demonstrates how the efforts of one person, who stands up for right, truly can effect change. - Mariuca Rofick This unique book, about a woman who has changed so many lives, will also give readers a rare peek behind the scenes of how policies and beliefs are formed at the world headquarters for Jehovah's Witnesses. - Mark O'Donnell I found myself spellbound reading Barbara's story, which provides a unique perspective on how things work at Watchtower's headquarters. Her time spent there as a researcher yielded some real nuggets regarding Watchtower's history that were previously unknown, and expose how Watchtower white washes its history. - Lee Elder I highly recommend reading Barbara Anderson's book. It is a candid narrative of a worldwide religion, one that most people have seen as harmless until now. She also offers a workable plan of action for change. - Joanna Foreman
