The Right to Religious Liberty

The Right to Religious Liberty

Barry W Lynn; Marc D Stern; Oliver S Thomas

Southern Illinois University Press
1995
nidottu
This revised and updated edition of "The Right to Religious Liberty "sets forth an individual s religious rights under present law, offering suggestions as to how they can be preserved and protected. The ACLU has diligently and vigorously advanced claims that the religious liberty of individual believers and religious institutions are infringed upon by government. Written by two ordained Christian ministers and a former Orthodox Jewish rabbinical school student, "The Right to Religious Liberty "represents the view that far from being militantly atheistic, the ACLU s insistence on the separation of church and state is in the best interests of both church and state.Like other handbooks in the ACLU series, this volume is developed in the hope that Americans, informed of their rights, will be encouraged to exercise them. Barry Lynn, Marc D. Stern, and Oliver Thomas explain this shared conviction through the use of a question and answer format that addresses a broad range of issues dealing with church-state separation and religious liberty. In detail, the authors discuss establishment and free exercise clauses, religion and public education, governmental aid to religious organizations, religious displays, the role of chaplains, religion and family law, accommodation of religion, church autonomy, conscientious objection, refusal of medical treatment for religious reasons, zoning and religious institutions, clergy confidentiality, religion in the workplace, prisoners rights, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, state constitutions, and the controversial topic of deprogramming. In presenting the material as objectively as possible, the authors do not always concur with each of the cited decisions, nor do they always agree with the specific solutions of a case. Instead, their goal is to give the interested reader a synopsis of the most current and relevant information and a general sense of the meaning and application of the law."

This title was first published in 2000: This volume tells the fascinating story of the origins, development, growth and survival of a small country brewery in Hampshire. Employing and analyzing a wealth of original documentation, it examines the local environment both before establishment of the brewery and during the 150 years of its existence. While the performance of Gales Brewery is examined in the context of the British brewing industry as a whole, the thread of family involvement is woven throughout the volume. The contribution of contrasting individual entrepreneurs is examined in absorbing detail, from the half century of domination by George Alexander Gale to the subsequent century of contribution by the Bowyer family. Gales is exceptional in being one of the very few family breweries to survive the mania of mergers and takeovers in the brewing industry. This very readable book will be of considerable interest to business, economic, family and local historians.

Baptists in America

Baptists are the second-largest religious group in the United States, trailing only Catholics. They represent nearly 20% of the US population and a third of all American Protestants, and have attained a certain level of notoriety for their penchant for controversy. From their defiance of established churches in the Colonial period, to pastor Robert Jeffress calling Mitt Romney's Mormonism a "cult" during the Republican primaries of 2012 they have consistently been at the forefront of religion's collision with culture and society. This book will offer a history of Baptists in America from the Colonial period to the present day, from their fight for the separation of church and state to their role as some of the chief combatants in today's culture wars. Their history has been marked by internal battles and schisms that were microcosms of national events, from the conflict over slavery that divided North from South to the ascendancy of conservatives within the Southern Baptist Convention, which mirrored developments within the Republican Party. The book's primary theme will be Baptists' struggles between seeing themselves as "insiders" or "outsiders" in American culture. The persecuted Baptists of the colonial period became one of the dominant churches in nineteenth-century America. Today, they are the primary spokespersons for evangelical America. Yet, even as they appear comfortable in this role, Baptists have never been sure if America represented a Babylon of spiritual exile, or a peaceful Zion. This book will offer a lively and accessible history of one of America's most important religious groups.

Plant remains can preserve a critical part of history of life on Earth. While telling the fascinating evolutionary story of plants and vegetation across the last 500 million years, this book also crucially offers non-specialists a practical guide to studying, dealing with and interpreting plant fossils. It shows how various techniques can be used to reveal the secrets of plant fossils and how to identify common types, such as compressions and impressions. Incorporating the concepts of evolutionary floras, this second edition includes revised data on all main plant groups, the latest approaches to naming plant fossils using fossil-taxa and techniques such as tomography. With extensive illustrations of plant fossils and living plants, the book encourages readers to think of fossils as once-living organisms. It is written for students on introductory or intermediate courses in palaeobotany, palaeontology, plant evolutionary biology and plant science, and for amateurs interested in studying plant fossils.

The definitive book on what is known about the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene archaeological record in the Southeast The 1996 benchmark volume The Paleoindian and Early Archaic Southeast, edited by David G. Anderson and Kenneth E. Sassaman, was the first study to summarize what was known of the peoples who lived in the Southeast when ice sheets covered the northern part of the continent and mammals such as mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and ground sloths roamed the landscape. The American Southeast at the End of the Ice Age provides an updated, definitive synthesis of current archaeological research gleaned from an array of experts in the region. It is organized in three parts: state records, the regional perspective, and reflections and future directions. Chapters survey a diversity of topics including the distribution of the earliest archaeological sites in the region, chipped-stone tool technology, the expanding role of submerged archaeology, hunter-gatherer lifeways, past climate changes and the extinction of megafauna on the transitional landscape, and evidence of demographic changes at the end of the Ice Age. Discussion of the ethical responsibilities regarding the use of private collections and the relationship of archaeologists and the avocational community, insight from outside the Southeast, and considerations for future research round out the volume.
