C'est peut- tre ici le lieu de noter que sir Lionel Bertram, bien qu'il f t tr s-brave et tout fait l'homme qu'il fallait pour n gocier avantageusement avec des peuples exotiques, ne s' tait jamais assujetti des habitudes d'exactitude dans ses affaires d'int r t. Un arrangement avait t conclu d'apr s lequel trois mille francs devaient tre pay s annuellement pour les besoins du jeune Bertram, et cette somme devant couvrir toutes les d penses d'habillement, de blanchissage et d'argent de poche, en sus de la bagatelle de la nourriture et de l' ducation de l'enfant, nous pouvons ajouter que le march n' tait pas trop on reux pour sir Lionel. Le premier semestre fut pay ; mais, partir de l jusqu' la fin de la seconde ann e, M. Wilkinson ne toucha plus rien.
