The Great Recession provided an opportunity to reconsider how to simultaneously enhance the well-being of individuals, corporations, countries, and the global environment. A half-century of vital environmental data demands examining several questions pertaining to the impact of a recession on sustainable environmental consumption. Does a recession provide an occasion for productive dialogue that might reconcile the ostensible incompatibility of economic and ecological rationales? Does it constitute an artificial “turning point” whereby appropriate incentives may induce productive change? Are post-recession environmental consumption patterns indicative of government encouragement, and corporate willingness, to pursue transformative environmental technologies? Alternatively, are the patterns illustrative of countries transferring their environmental consumption to other countries via international trade?Bret L. Billet argues that the simultaneous investigation of both the Ecological Modernization theory and the Ecological Unequal Exchange theory strengthens the present quantitative analysis, enhancing understanding of the recession, well-being, sustainable environment nexus. Each ecological theory is rooted in the politicized evolution of traditional theories of economic development. A number of nations, conspicuously Israel and the United States, have been increasingly attracted to the use of strategic barriers to promote national defense. In "Do Good Fences Make Good Neighbours?", defense analyst Brent Sterling examines the historical use of strategic defences such as walls or fortifications to evaluate their effectiveness and consider their implications for modern security. Sterling studies six famous defences spanning 2,500 years, representing both democratic and authoritarian regimes: the Long Walls of Athens, Hadrian's Wall in Roman Britain, the Ming Great Wall of China, Louis XIV's Pre Carre, France's Maginot Line, and Israel's Bar Lev Line. Although many of these barriers were effective in the short term, they also affected the states that created them in terms of cost, strategic outlook, military readiness, and relations with neighbours. Sterling assesses how modern barriers against ground and air threats could influence threat perceptions, alter the military balance, and influence the builder's subsequent policy choices. Advocates and critics of strategic defences often bolster their arguments by selectively distorting history. Case studies explore how to improve military adaptation and preparedness in peacetime by investigating foreign wars Preparing for the next war at an unknown date against an undetermined opponent is a difficult undertaking with extremely high stakes. Even the most detailed exercises and wargames do not truly simulate combat and the fog of war. Thus, outside of their own combat, militaries have studied foreign wars as a valuable source of battlefield information. The effectiveness of this learning process, however, has rarely been evaluated across different periods and contexts. Through a series of in-depth case studies of the US Army, Navy, and Air Force, Brent L. Sterling creates a better understanding of the dynamics of learning from “other people’s wars,” determining what types of knowledge can be gained from foreign wars, identifying common pitfalls, and proposing solutions to maximize the benefits for doctrine, organization, training, and equipment. Other People’s Wars explores major US efforts involving direct observation missions and post-conflict investigations at key junctures for the US armed forces: the Crimean War (1854–56), Russo-Japanese War (1904–5), Spanish Civil War (1936–39), and Yom Kippur War (1973), which preceded the US Civil War, First and Second World Wars, and major army and air force reforms of the 1970s, respectively. The case studies identify learning pitfalls but also show that initiatives to learn from other nations’ wars can yield significant benefits if the right conditions are met. The abiotic characteristics of the environment--including temperature, oxygen availability, salinity, and hydrostatic pressure--present challenges to all biochemical structures and processes. This volume first examines the nature of these perturbations to biochemical systems and then elucidates the major adaptive strategies that enable organisms from all Domains of Life--Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya--to conserve common types of biochemical structures and processes across a wide range of environments. In addition to these conservative adaptations that foster a biochemical unity among diverse species, other adaptations can be viewed as innovative changes that enable organisms to exploit new features of the environment that may themselves be the result of biological activities. The opening chapter outlines the basic principles of biochemical adaptations and raises the questions that serve as the focal points for the detailed analysis found in the next three chapters, which are devoted to the study of relationships involving oxygen, temperature, and water-solute effects. In these three chapters, the effects of the variable in question on fundamental biochemical processes and structures are examined. This analysis forms a basis for the subsequent analysis of how adaptive changes modify biochemical systems to establish environmental optima and tolerance limits. This analysis includes examples from all Domains of Life to emphasize the commonality of the fundamental strategies of biochemical adaptation. The final chapter examines the challenges organisms face from the rapid environmental changes that are occurring in the Anthropocene. The effects of co-occurring changes in multiple stressors are examined to provide a realistic and integrative analysis of effects of global change. The underlying genetic capacities of different types of organisms to adapt to rapid environmental change are discussed to provide a basis for predicting the relative success different species--including our own--face in a rapidly changing world.
