Deliciously wicked satires about local and international celebrities, the poems in Portable Altamont evince an irrepressible grasp of the zeitgeist, its machinations and manipulations, its possibilities and puerility. Who other than artist and raconteur Brian Joseph Davis could have imagined Margaret Atwood as a human beatbox, Jessica Simpson applying for arts grants or the Swedish Chef reciting T. S. Eliot? Davis uses every literary form available to revel in and rearrange pop culture. Even the index turns into a short story about Luke Perry's descent into a shadowy underworld of Parisian intellectuals and terrorists. A word of warning: this book is a complete and utter fiction. Philip Roth is not David Lee Roth's brother. Reese Witherspoon is not a Communist cell leader, and Don Knotts has never been a New Age guru. The stuff about Nicole Richie, however, is absolutely true. Portable Altamont is that rare book that is both incendiary and compulsively readable. Get to it before the lawyers do!

At the outbreak of war in 1939 Germany was committed to the concept of Blitzkrieg yet the reality became something very different as every corner of German society was impacted by the realities of war. This book will detail the critical civilian support that was necessary to maintain German control and include details of the experiences of civilians who suffered at the hands of their own government as well as enduring the deprivations and fears of wartime life. This book is the first detailed, illustrated description in English of wartime life in Germany, and the tentacles of the Nazi state as they affected every man, woman and child.
The decision to reintroduce unit Colours for the armed forces of the new Wehrmacht involved many problems. No unit flags and standards had been produced since before 1914. Paul Casberg, the well-known master painter and illustrator, was commissioned to design the new Army Colours, a commission which, in his own words, he considered to be 'the most beautiful order I have ever received'.Packed with numerous contemporary photographs, and eight full page colour plates by Malcolm McGregor, Brian L. Davis's text examines the flags of the Wehrmacht, in this first of three volumes concerning flags of the Third Reich.
In his book Mein Kampf Adolf Hitler claims that he made the decision to use the swastika as the emblem for his fledgling movement. He was responsible for the shape the swastika finally took, and for the choice of colours used, which set the pattern for all subsequent flags. In this third of a series of texts (MAA 270 & MAA 274), Brian L. Davis investigates the flags of the Third Reich party and police units. The text is complemented by numerous contemporary photographs, and eight full page colour plates by Malcolm McGregor.

Both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis are locked in the American psyche as iconic symbols of victory and defeat. The author contests that these images tend to obscure the larger visions that compelled both men to pursue their policies and actions, resulting in the American civil war.

For nearly 200 years, a permanent settlement at the mouth of Galveston Bay has welcomed pirates, sailors, immigrants, and visitors from around the world. As Galveston grew, its buildings were visible signs of the city's prosperity and the talent of its craftsmen. For many, this city was a gateway to America and an inspiration of what other communities in Texas and the Southwest would become. Although Galveston has thousands of historic buildings remaining, many have been lost to the elements and development over the years. Buildings such as the ones found within these pages define the character of our city and its culture.
Originally published in 1983, this book provides a revealing and comprehensive perspective on nurse education in the 20th Century. The opening chapters look at the students themselves: the sort of people who come into nursing and it examines why the drop-out rate is high and how reality differs from expectations. The following section examines teaching on the wards and the final part is concerned with the education and support of those involved in nurse teaching. It includes a discussion of the nature of teaching and of ways of studying the teaching process, as well as analysis of developments in the provision of library and information services to nurse educators, nurse administrators and clinical nursing staff.
Originally published in 1987 this book presents a number of research-based studies in nursing education, concentrating particularly on the nursing curriculum and its planning, content implementation and evaluation. Some of the chapters report on specific research projects whilst others are more general reviews. The book is written by leading researchers in nurse education in the UK and will be of interest to nurse tutors and teachers and researchers.
