Making the Most of It: By the Author of Clouds of Glory and Winner of the J.R. Ackerley Prize for Autobiography
'Philosopher, politician, novelist, television interviewer, MP, and music and drama critic, Magee is a man of many parts. But his star role ...] is that of autobiographer.'Francis King, SpectatorIn this final volume of his autobiography Bryan Magee completes his story with his customary candour and clarity. He takes up the thread as an undergraduate in Oxford, where he has his biggest love affair, publishes a volume of poems, takes two degrees, and is elected President of the Oxford Union. Within three years of going down he has lived in Sweden and the United States (countries that he has visited regularly all his life), and has written his second book, Go West, Young Man.At the heart of Making the Most of It is Magee's harrowing account of what he has called 'a fairly disastrous period of my life' - his relationship with Ingrid S derlund, whom he married after she became pregnant with their daughter Gunnela. The marriage soon ended, but Magee's Swedish family - now not only a daughter, but three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren - have always been central to his life.Writing books has been Magee's chief priority and preoccupation. His major achievement as an author has been to make philosophy more widely accessible, and to produce two outstanding books on Wagner, in addition to his famous book on Schopenhauer. These books have been well reviewed, but their sales were not sufficient to pay for a life in central London, with its superabundance of theatre, music and social life - all leading passions of his. So he also earned money elsewhere. He began by becoming a fully trained brewer with Guinness, but then moved into the making of television programmes, and also produced more and more criticism of theatre and music. He made a name for himself in philosophy, and was a visiting professor at universities in Britain and abroad. For ten years he was a Member of Parliament. All these occupations have added their colour to his life and to this narrative.

Ship Stability for Masters and Mates explores all aspects of ship stability and ship strength, squat, and interaction and trim, as well as materials stresses and forces. Organized into 56 chapters, the book looks at the relationship between ship stability and ship motion, with emphasis on group weights in a ship. It also explains how TPCs are calculated for a range of drafts extending beyond the light and loaded drafts, along with form coefficients, including the coefficient of fineness of the waterplane area. The book explains how to perform KB, BM, and KM calculations and make graphics on metacentric diagrams. It considers large-angle stability, the effect of beam and freeboard on stability, and hydrostatic curves and values for vessels that are initially on even keel. The reader is also introduced to free-surface effects of slack tanks with divisional bulkheads, how side winds affect ship stability, and the correlation between freeboard and stability curves. Other chapters focus on timber ship freeboard marks, procedures and calculations for drydocking and stability, and ship squat in open water and in confined channels. The book also includes extracts from the 1998 Merchant Shipping (Load Line) Regulations Number MSN 1752(M).This book is intended for students seeking to obtain Transport Certificates of Competency for Deck Officers and Engineering Officers and STCW equivalent International qualifications, as well as Chief Mates and Officers on Watch (Officers in Charge) on board merchant ships and other maritime personnel, port authorities, marine consultants, nautical study lecturers, and marine superintendents.
The Dialectic in Journalism

The Dialectic in Journalism

Carter R. Bryan; John C. Merrill

Louisiana State University Press
1993
nidottu
A main intent of this book is to show how freedom relates to ethics in journalism and at the same time to discuss how a number of other contraries or antinomies are unsuitable in the real world of journalism. I also hope to demonstrate how a synthesis, a position near the Aristotelian Golden Mean, is the best solution to many of the problems of mass communication. We need to form the habit of thinking dialectically about many of our journalistic problems realizing that a clash of opposing positions is not harmful but useful in the constantly changing world of journalism. - From the IntroductionOver the past thirty years, John C. Merrill has produced what many critics consider an essential body of writing on the relatedness of journalism and philosophy. He speaks with authority for a growing group of scholars who are looking behind the product of journalism for the ideologies that create them. His latest work, The Dialectic in Journalism,is an ambitious and comprehensive examination of the forces at work throughout the press. The book focuses on two important and timely issues: journalistic license and social control, or in a larger sense, freedom and responsibility. What are the just limits of the press? Where may libertarians and statists of the press find common ground? How do journalists convert the world into the word?Merrill places sweeping questions such as these in the context of the Western intellectual tradition. Beginning with the Heraclitean observation that reality is constantly changing, he traces the development of the dialectic through Plato and Aristotle to Rousseau, Spinoza, Nietzsche, and Hegel. Merrill connect these thinkers with many of the problems facing the journalistic community today. He uses the Hegelian dialectic to suggest that a moderating force is at work in the contemporary journalism. He shows that the tensions created between the concept of freedom of expression and necessity of restraint resolve themselves in a synthesis of ""social responsibility.""Readers familiar with Merrill's earlier works will find in this new book the same strong concern for the ethical foundations of journalism. The Dialectic in Journalism is sufficiently rigorous philosophically that it sustains a close critical reading, and yet the general reader will find it straightforward and lucid. Journalists will want to read this book to gain new insight into the frequently unexamined philosophy of their trade, and the public will profit from a broader understand of the force that plays a central role in shaping our view of the world.
Henry's Attic

Henry's Attic

Henry's Attic provides fascinating documentation of some of the one million artifacts in the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. The items represent both Henry Ford's passion for collecting Americana and the astonishing array of gifts-some of great historic value and others of a distinctly homegrown variety-that account for almost half of the museum's collections. It was the quantity of these gifts and the unusual and even unique nature of many of them that provided the inspiration for this book.Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, which Ford established in Dearborn, Michigan in the late 1920s, was intended to recreate the slow-paced, rural character of America before the advent of the automobile. The purchases he made and the gifts he was given reflect his desire to document and preserve the lifeways of common people and to emphasize middle-class rural history, as represented by the tools of agriculture, industry, and transportation.

The 55 chapters of Friends, Families & Forays are bursting with details about the people and the pursuits that colored the life of Henry Ford. Here the reader will meet prominent and diverse figures such as Thomas Edison, John Borroughs, George Washington Carver, Helen Keller, and Mahatma Gandhi – all of whose lives intersected that of Henry Ford at some interesting point in his life. Also brought to life in these pages are the branches of Ford's family tree, from his Irish ancestors to the descendants who carry his legacy today. Although it was the automobile that made him an industrial icon, Henry Ford could boast of exploits in many other arenas as well: railroads, speedboats, robots, flour mills, rubber plantations, and humanitarian efforts around the world and in his own backyard. Ford's hard work and passionate interests brought him great wealth, and this book provides a peek at the luxuries he and his wife, Clara, enjoyed, from a yacht and a private rail car, to gracious residences in Michigan, Florida, and Georgia.

Henry's Lieutenants

Although Henry Ford gloried in the limelight of highly publicized achievement, he privately admitted, "I don't do so much, I just go around lighting fires under other people." Henry's Lieutenants features biographies of thirty-five "other people" who served Henry Ford in a variety of capacities, and nearly all of whom contributed to his fame. These biographical sketches and career highlights reflect the people of high caliber employed by Henry Ford to accomplish his goals: Harry Bennett, Albert Kahn, Ernest Kanzler, William S. Knudsen, and Charles E. Sorenson, among others. Most were employed by the Ford Motor Company, although a few of them were Ford's personal employees satisfying concurrent needs of a more private nature, including his farming, educational, and sociological ventures. Ford Bryan obtained a considerable amount of the material in this book from the oral reminiscences of the subjects themselves.

Covering the period from 1820 to 1950, the time when the first Fords came to America until shortly after the death of Henry Ford, ""The Fords of Dearborn"" is a series of illustrated stories about the various branches of the Ford family, together with accounts of some of Henry Ford's unpublicized projects. Author Ford R. Bryan - who was himself a member of the Ford family of Dearborn - provides authentic and fascinating information about the Fords based almost entirely on information and photographs contained in the Ford Archives of Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village. From family bibles, family legend, correspondence, and the historical archives of Dearborn, he traces the family history from England to Ireland, then to America, and in 1832 to the wilderness of the Michigan Territory. The Fords of Dearborn includes genealogical tables and more than 125 illustrations depicting family members, their farms, their homes, and their relationships. This second edition, in a new design in larger format than the previous edition, includes an index that will be appreciated by both readers and genealogists.
