Demonstrates how students and educators can resist narrow, utilitarian views of higher education's purpose. While the search for meaning and purpose appears to be a constant throughout human history, there are characteristics about our current time period that make this search different from any other previous time, particularly for college students. In this book, Perry L. Glanzer, Jonathan P. Hill, and Byron R. Johnson explore college students' search for meaning and purpose and the role that higher education plays. To shed empirical light on this complex issue, the authors draw on in-depth interviews with four hundred college students from different types of institutions across the United States. They also analyze three sets of national survey data: the National Study of Youth and Religion, College Students Beliefs and Values, and their own Gallup-conducted survey of 2,500 college students. Their research identifies important social, educational, and cultural influences that shape students' quests and the answers they find. Arguing against a utilitarian view of education, Glanzer, Hill, and Johnson conclude that colleges and universities can and should cultivate and aid students in their journeys, and they offer suggestions for doing so.

The definitive work on a groundbreaking study, this essential volume provides a coherent picture of the complexity of development from birth to adulthood. Explicated are both the methodology of the Minnesota study and its far-reaching contributions to understanding how we become who we are. The book marshals a vast body of data on the ways in which individuals' strengths and vulnerabilities are shaped by myriad influences, including early experiences, family and peer relationships throughout childhood and adolescence, variations in child characteristics and abilities, and socioeconomic conditions. Implications for clinical intervention and prevention are also addressed. Rigorously documented and clearly presented, the study's findings elucidate the twists and turns of individual pathways, illustrating as never before the ongoing interplay between developing children and their environments.

Modern biological databases comprise not only data, but also sophisticated query facilities and bioinformatics data analysis tools. This book provides an exploration through the world of Bioinformatics Database Systems. The book summarizes the popular and innovative bioinformatics repositories currently available, including popular primary genetic and protein sequence databases, phylogenetic databases, structure and pathway databases, microarray databases and boutique databases. It also explores the data quality and information integration issues currently involved with managing bioinformatics databases, including data quality issues that have been observed, and efforts in the data cleaning field.Biological data integration issues are also covered in-depth, and the book demonstrates how data integration can create new repositories to address the needs of the biological communities. It also presents typical data integration architectures employed in current bioinformatics databases. The latter part of the book covers biological data mining and biological data processing approaches using cloud-based technologies. General data mining approaches are discussed, as well as specific data mining methodologies that have been successfully deployed in biological data mining applications. Two biological data mining case studies are also included to illustrate how data, query, and analysis methods are integrated into user-friendly systems.Aimed at researchers and developers of bioinformatics database systems, the book is also useful as a supplementary textbook for a one-semester upper-level undergraduate course, or an introductory graduate bioinformatics course.

In "Legal Outsiders," Darryl Williams knew law school would be difficult, but he never imagined the viciousness of classmates, the ultra competiveness of his colleagues, the racial intolerance of others, and the arrogance and sarcasm of his professors. But that was only the beginning; he was also intrigued by the seductive charm of Lena, another law school student who vowed to avoid men at all costs after enduring a failed marriage. Malik, the quintessential player, finds more than he bargained for when he allows his sexual addiction to distract from his educational pursuits. His fate will be left at the mercy of others because of his irresponsible actions. James realizes that having an over-sexed wife can lead to ecstasy and utter heartbreak. The question is, which one will he choose?

How does military service collide with Black identity in a racially stratified America? Black Veteranality is an examination of the intersection of race, patriotism, and military service from the perspective of Black veterans, offering a robust framework for reimagining American patriotism and reframing veteran identity. Black veteranality emerges through an interdisciplinary synthesis of W.E.B. Du Bois’ foundational concept of "double consciousness"—the psychological duality Black Americans experience when negotiating racialized identity formations— and Veteran Critical Theory’s (VCT’s) structural analysis of institutional power dynamics shaping military service members. Through critical ethnography and narrative interviews, this conceptual framework interrogates monolithic veteran narratives by documenting how Black service members simultaneously embody patriotic ideals through military service while confronting systemic racism’s psychological toll and navigate what critical race scholars term the White gaze—a hegemonic social mechanism that perpetuates exclusion through perpetual scrutiny of Black veterans’ cultural authenticity and national belonging. Essential reading for scholars of African American studies, American studies, veteran studies, and military professions, this work bridges academia and activism, proving true loyalty lies in confronting systemic inequities.
