When it comes to ambition, I can't help myself from constantly pursuing happiness. My brain always recognises when I could be happier and wills me to do my best to get there. Setting aside logic, I often follow my heart towards the happiness I am so desperately seeking. Being alone and single, and at an age where I may be running out of years, maybe I started looking too hard. What I do know for sure is that my mind is the happiest when I spend time on a golf course. As a player of a reasonable quality, I also keep up my quest to master the Royal and Ancient game. But I recognize that as a caddie, I stand a much better chance. Nothing beats the feeling of caddying in a Professional tournament, pushing your golfer to his limits like a jockey would push his thoroughbred horse. Following my heart, I decided to turn my back on the lucrative corporate world of online gaming in Gibraltar and pursued a career as a golf caddie on a professional golf tour based on the Spanish Costa del Sol. Living a solitary life, I wrote to occupy myself and to take my mind of the noises in my head. Quietly fighting to keep the demons of loneliness and depression from my door. My stubborn desire to only settle with my "perfect" woman was the reason for my bachelorhood. I was certain my angel was out there somewhere. Looking across the Mediterranean to Africa in the distance, I decided to immerse myself into the Andalusian cultures and traditions. With writing as my hobby, I went to bullfights and fiestas, capturing the events in all their gory details. I Went to Spanish Opens and describe the behind the rope dramas that unfold. With time, I started to love Andaluc a as my new home, but I needed to learn how to love Spain as much as I loved my South Africa. Within a few years, thanks to a turn of good fortune and lady luck, I went from caddie to a commentator. Doors opened and soon I was living the life that I could only have dreamed of a few years earlier. I missed the thrills of tournament golf, being one with my player, living every shot and decision we make, but instead I was writing and commentating on all the brilliant young stars of the future. On the outside I became a figure that was always smiling and happy, but hidden from view I constantly fought my emotional demons that never fully went away. With loneliness comes an urge to love and be loved, but not all fairy-tales have happy endings. With a click of the fingers, my new life and new found success was gone, pulled out from under my feet. My dreams shattered in one month. I was left with the many good friends that I had made on the tour and along the journey. By just being myself I had become close to some of the finest European golfing stars of the future. Stars that would go on to play In the Ryder Cup and the World Cup of Golf. Once again though it was time to look ahead. Finally learning how to live a life alone and without looking for, or wanting love, I met a Spanish flamenco dancing Cinderella. With any luck perhaps the start of the next chapter in my life.......................
Last year saw the launch of Burdizzo Books 12days anthology. It began with twelve stories based on each day of the twelve days of Christmas. These are those stories in a collected separate volume. Each year we plan to rewrite these with different authors.
Professor Carmichael here proposes a convincing solution to a perplexing problem in biblical studies--the order and arrangement of the Deuteronomic laws. He shows that Deuteronomy is not a haphazard collection of fragments, but rather a carefully constructed, coherent literary work with a definite purpose. Through his analysis, many of the peculiar features of the code are made intelligible, for example, the relationship between the laws and earlier stories, sagas, and historical narratives. Opening up a new approach to the interpretation of the laws, this book makes an important contribution to the understanding of biblical material. Calum M. Carmichael is Professor of Comparative Literature and Biblical Studies at Cornell.
Calum M. Carmichael here challenges commonly accepted views respecting the derivation of the biblical laws recorded in Deuteronomy and the Decalogue, presenting compelling evidence that literary traditions, rather than social imperatives, dictated the form taken by the laws. Carmichael confronts and discusses such problematic and important issues as the sequence in which apparently unrelated laws appear. Why, he then asks, are some laws general in scope, while others are extremely specific? Acknowledging the literary sophistication of the biblical compilers, Carmichael accounts for their attribution of the Deuteronomic laws to Moses, and of the Decalogue to Yahweh. He asserts that, in order to preserve the prophetic impact of their material, the compilers closely studied existing biblical narrative, and selected laws which maintained the appropriate historical context. Using this perspective, Carmichael is able to detect strong logical continuity in both the structure and the content of the Decalogue and the Deuteronomic laws. An original and distinguished contribution to the study of biblical law, Law and Narrative in the Bible will interest legal historians and Biblical scholars alike. Calum M. Carmichael is Professor of Comparative Literature and Biblical Studies at Cornell.
This is a book about domestic disintegration. This serves as a metaphor for the decline in contemporary Scottish Society. It is a journey throughout Scotland. The central protagonist Cal cannot conclude this investigation dispassionately. His identity is enmeshed in a personal and National sense that is both a struggle for survival and a realisation that he has in some sense failed and therefore has been failed. His personal failure represents the sheer hypocrisy of Scotland's social structure. Where the majority of the population, in the face of often elemental and brutal alienation, are condemned to seek out some sort of marginal living. Led by the nose of the self-satisfied, detached, bureaucratic elite. This of course is a paradox because whether we choose to hide or even disguise our compassion for one another, sensitivity and kindness suggests the end result is the same--we are all forced to live on the margins of existence. This book examines this final point, and finally separates the fallacy of contentment from the ideals of happiness.
